I have my own Petey, his name is Chance and without him, I would have given up on life. I lost my Dad, my son was killed in a car crash, then I lost my Mom unexpectedly. I truly could not have cared less about living. Then this big, beautiful solid black german shepherd came into my life & gave me a reason to get out of bed. I am so grateful for him! Now, off to the trail for a walk.

yessss! My Christian mom doesn't believe they have souls! 🙄 she sed the animals in heaven mentioned in the Bible were already there to begin with and not proof of their souls. I'm not a Christian and I certainly believe they have souls!! In fact, dogs tend to reincarnate and follow owners around from life to life. 🥺

I have often said, heaven wouldn’t be heaven without animals and our beloved pets!
Dogs are wonderful. My dogs were there everytime I needed them. God made the animals first so we wouldn't be alone.
Anytime you loose a beloved pet your heart hurts!!! Good on you to get another shelter pet. I got Olivia just before the COVID thing hit. Thanks be to God

What a lovely story! A beautiful bond. I know this only too well. I've rescued so many dogs (and other animals), fixed them nutritionally and psychologically. And I could not live without my dog. I just lost Mikke-san, a little Maltese-Poodle that had been abandoned. He was 13 yrs old, blind, and had heart issues. Mostly from malnutrition. He could barely walk, badly matted, and nails were curved in so long that he walked on curved nails. Horrific neglect. He slept all day, squealed when I touched him. His teeth were rotten, he had periodontal disease and very bad breath. Everything hurt.
After two weeks, he started lifting his head and looking at me. I gave him home cooked food, real meat, veggies, sardines, fish, eggs, yoghurt, fish oil, raw bones. He loved his food! No more commercial food canned or pelleted. Only real food, mini beef burgers, roasted pork... Mikke-san licked his bowls lovingly. He filled out, and through food, I won him over. I groomed him myself. I started walking him, coaxing him along patiently for 100 yrs, 200 yrs, 1/2 mile, 1 mile! His legs grew very muscular, his tail wagged, and he trotted along daily very happy sniffing everything. For a blind dog, this was a lot of enrichment in smells, fresh air, exercise. He trusted me and followed my legs. Mikke went with me and my other dog, Remy to stores, parks, everywhere. Remy was also rescued, as a Mini-poodle, age 10, blind, heart issues. Remy could walk 4 miles with me easily.
Before we got Mikke, Remy and I, did a long road trip and saw every CA mission from San Diego to Sonoma! Mission accomplished.
Mikke's heart finally gave out, and he could not breathe. He passed away recently at age 16. He got 3 good years of a very happy life with the best food he could eat. He got dental surgery, his teeth were fixed and pulled out, he got weekly grooming from me, and he was so proud to belong to someone, have a doggie buddy, and go everywhere and lead an active life. He was such a sweet dog. I miss him terribly. I still have Remy who is now 17 yrs, but still going strong. We live in Silicon Valley and I have visited this shelter looking for another little doggie I can adopt and pamper. Most of the issues with animals are based on nutrition and exercise. Pellet food is not good for animals, and is a convenience only. Make your own food, use fresh things, and feed with love. Exercise is very important. Good grooming, check for issues, animals cannot talk. Check ears, teeth, nails, paws, anal glands, skin, eyes, and fix what is broken, clean what is dirty, and give the dog the best life he can have. Don't be lazy. This is the best friend you will ever have. Your spouse will divorce you, your parents will die, your kids will grow up, leave, and not call home. Your best friend in college will grow distant or switch loyalties. But your dog is going to be more faithful and loving than your own shadow. So feed well, and don't cut corners on care. This is your most precious companion in life.
You are amazing. Just want to say many dogs love vegetables too. My dogs love carrots, potatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, beans and brown rice pasta.
The loyalty and love that animals give us. In a way we don't really deserve THEM....Great story!

Animals are such a blessing. I had to put down my 13 yo dog with end stage chf yesterday. The dog got me through some of the most difficult parts of my life. I've been crying off and on today. I remember this video and it provided me with some comfort. Tucker, I hope to see you again someday, you were a great dog. Thank you.

I'm so sorry. My tears are flowing. My Handsome Blacky also passed away due to cancer. It feels like it just happened yesterday. Having a dog or a cat is the best gift someone can give themselves. A side of us comes out that we didn't know we had. Only they know our true selves. You and Peety look amazing and congratulations on the impressive weight losses. Dogs are a blessing, to make us better humans. Their life is so short because they don't need more time to improve themselves like we do; they are already perfect in unconditional and pure love, devotion, and joy of life.

When I first saw this story years ago, it affected me profoundly. Today, all these years on, it still does. Not only did I share it with everyone I knew, but I began recommending it to patients suffering with chronic physical or mental illness. So too, I began encouraging patients to consider adopting a pet - a cat, a dog, a tank full of fish. One patient even got a horse!
Animals are extraordinary in that they sneak-up on us and crawl straight into our hearts. Illness nearly always causes us to become self-involved. We naturally turn inward, becoming increasingly isolated. Left unaddressed, these behaviours can eventually lead to depression.
Of course it needn't be like this. In surprising ways, animals are a lot like children - they rely on us, they require us, they demand things from us. Perhaps most importantly, kids and critters *need* us - and after so long thinking (and feeling sorry) only for ourselves? That can feel positively liberating! Sure, a part of us may secretly enjoy lolling-about in bed, ruminating on our dismal lives. But as a cat famously says to his glum-looking owner in a well-known meme, "I know divorce is tough, man. But my food bowl isn't going to fill itself!
At the risk of sounding dramatic, I can tell you that this video changed me. Soon after seeing it, I reached-out to Eric on FB and he graciously accepted my friend request. We never know how, or to what degree, we may be impacted by something, but this story (and the others in the series) was "it" for me.
Speaking directly to anyone reading this? I urge you to remain open to life's many rich surprises - to stories, insights and perspectives you may not have previously considered. In this way? Things may suddenly shift for you, too - just as this video shifted things for me ❤
