Yeah, it really was. But back then, i felt i was the only one among my peers who saw it that way. Also, dont forget about Oteil Burbridge at this time.
Steve and Vic are two totally different players. They each have their own style and technique, and that in itself, should be appreciated. The coolest part is how the both of them play off of each other and complement what the other is doing. They're both quite brilliant in their own ways. Victor doesn't play 6-string fretless harmonic stuff, and Steve doesn't play all the slap and hammer-on stuff. Just appreciate the fact that they are both incredible at what they do.
Own this DVD, it is absolutely incredible. Victor came to Sacramento a few months back and we had the chance to see him in a really small venue. Only a hundred folks or so. If either of these guys perform anywhere close to you, it is worth it to see this happen live. You won't believe what you hear.
Since you're only 22 you don't understand. I was playing bass in the early 70's. When Jaco came around all us bass players started to think differently about how the bass should be played and it's roll in the band. Sure there were others expanding the roll of the instrument but Jaco took it to a whole new level. You my friend are the one who needs to expand their brain.
Ok enough said about victor. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIM! so dont take me for a mistake. But take a second - and look at steve bailey. The way he comps victor is fcking awesome. the controll he has over that fretless board, is awesome. And his mastering in harmonics. Its PURELY some pleasure for my bass loving ears =)
i'm dying with the musicianship on display in this video. steve's harmonics are AWESOME! i love the fact that vic's fingerstyle chops are on display here! so much stuff to practice.
"he just got famous cuss he was the first." Brilliant deduction. Being first and original is what it is all about. That's what separates the greats from the followers. Anybody can copy someone else. There you made my point!!!!
Sometimes it is hard for me to understand how two bassists that are so different can get together and perform pieces like this one. The power of music, I guess
Thank you. You are correct and your statement is very well put. The Classical musician expresses him self in more subtle and restricted ways but there is room for a personal touch.
A Chick From Corea... That's a real catchy title. I love how Steve Bailey look like his fingers aren't bound to the fretboard and how Victor rode above all else.
u guys are cool man, i really love it, vic's bass sounds great n steve's... wow, nice harmonic n just dont get it how do u actually memorise it. u guys really feels d groove of wht u are doing, man. salutes u brother....
Well, I don't know about Jamerson, but I'm pretty sure Jaco would love this: he was arguably the most inventive bass player on the planet until his untimely death, and to see these two guys playing all the parts of a song (just as Jaco advised all musicians to be able to) would be awesome for him.
Gmanjam I was thinking the SAME thing when I heard it...oh well this is really cool...I loike the vibe and there's nothing like well disciplined DEXTERITY! SIGH I love it! (Reminds me of Bella Fleck and the FLecktones from back in the day!) Smiles!
@TheMilfman7 the end is hilarious!!! i cracked up so hard. "i'm from south carolina, that stuff comes naturally. you're from virginia..." "virginia, oh man... i love chicken" LOL
Steve bailey-Im from south Carolina that stuff comes naturally.....your from Virginia? victor Wooten- Virginia o man....i love chicken LMAO wtf hahahahaah whyyy he must of been high as hell
They could explain that even slower, but I would never be able to play it, these guys are great they love what they do, that's all you need to play music. Victor sos grande, Steve sos grande.
It's amazing, the bass is. Just when you think you're getting good, you see a video like this and realize you're not even close. Living in Nashville does that too. Where else can you walk into a music shop and play with a bassist that toured with Clapton?
It's fretless. True masters of their instrument do not need frets. What he is doing takes decades of dedication. I respect, admire, and envy such skill.
Bass Extremes was a big milestone in bass history.
Yeah, it really was. But back then, i felt i was the only one among my peers who saw it that way. Also, dont forget about Oteil Burbridge at this time.

This video, no matter what mood I'm in, will always put me in a fantastic mood.
Own this DVD, it is absolutely incredible.

You won't believe what you hear.
those guys have so much fun playing together, you hear that in every note they play.
I had forgotten for years how these two are, mostly their chemistry playing together. It´s amazing.
Since you're only 22 you don't understand. I was playing bass in the early 70's. These guys are the definition of pros!!! These guys make a bass guitar talk!

These guys are f***ing good!
Excellent! They are so good that I lost my motivation to play again my bass...;-(
I will also say that it is amazing how Victor manages to make a 4 string bass sound like a guitar almost :P
A chick from Korea... and Benny from a Hill?
BEAUTIFUL THE SOUND OF BAILEY'S BASS. the harmonics sounds very clean and tasty.
Steve and Vic are great friends. They're just messing with each other.

This is just pure bliss to my ears.
Steve has fantastic intonation on the fretless bass!
Great video, fantastic bass playing!!
the bass is the coolest instrument on the planet!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes it is hard for me to understand how two bassists that are so different can get together and perform pieces like this one. The power of music, I guess

A Chick From Corea... That's a real catchy title. I love how Steve Bailey look like his fingers aren't bound to the fretboard and how Victor rode above all else.

"This song was meant to be"
"Be what?"
Holy shit I'm on the floor laughing

Amazing selection! Thanks!
@TheMilfman7 the end is hilarious!!! i cracked up so hard. "i'm from south carolina, that stuff comes naturally. you're from virginia..." "virginia, oh man... i love chicken" LOL
I love how Steve comments "Bass-icly" just late enough for the viewer to have had a short snicker at the pun already.
Amazing talent. I hope I can play as fluidly as these maestros one day
I love these guys. I was suposed to watch wooten in stockholm this evening but i couldn't. :(
omg this is incredible!
Steve bailey-Im from south Carolina that stuff comes naturally.....your from Virginia?
victor Wooten- Virginia o man....i love chicken
LMAO wtf hahahahaah whyyy he must of been high as hell
I've seen Victor live a few weeks back... He was giving a workshop... The guy plays bass like a god and has a very 'Zen' mindset and voice
My favorite part? 8:45 - Amazing in it's own way.
Crazy great video....
2 virtuosos of the electric bass!
the way steve jumps around the neck around 3:10 just gives it that much more character :P
this is just awesome!
man. I'd love to take myself, my bass, and spend a day jamming with those two.
Owned! Right on man!
This is awesome!!
3:10-3:13... DAFUQ, playing that in a fretless without getting out of tone, it's just insane, I bow to these bass gods
best bass tones ever
The sarcasm is so uncomfortable and you hope Victor is cool with it (I'm sure he is) and then icing on the cake is Victor going "I like chicken"
Love That Benny Hill!!
These guys are amazing. Just putting that out there. And I'd like to second what spyguys said.
They could explain that even slower, but I would never be able to play it, these guys are great they love what they do, that's all you need to play music.

I'm almost embarrassed to say that I've never heard of him. Being a trumpet player, Wynton was the first example that came to mind for me :)

That's one of the funniest posts I ever read!!!
:-)

It's fretless. True masters of their instrument do not need frets. What he is doing takes decades of dedication. I respect, admire, and envy such skill.
