- Back at it again with another homemade speedrun guide. Yeah I’m late to the party, but I’ve been meaning to try my hand at explaining the subject with what I’ve learned so far. I covered a lot so I probably missed a few things… but I hope this was still helpful, or at least entertaining! Enjoy^^

Q: Can I do this on the Wii/PS2 version?
A: Unfortunately, no.
Q: Can I do this with a keyboard?
A: Nope.
Q: It doesn’t work.
A: Not a question, but it does indeed work. You have to be precise; tilting the L-stick with too much or little force will not trigger Superspeed. Keep trying.
Q: Where’s the best place to practice?
A: Savannah Citadel Day Act 1 for M-speed, Dragon Road Day Act 2 for D-speed.
Q: What do you use to record gameplay?
A: Elgato Game Capture HD.
Q: What video editing software do you use?
A: Adobe Photoshop and iMovie.
Q: Why only 720p?
A: It’s hard to retain high resolution with my video editing format.

I used Arial Narrow, Nulshock, and NiseSegaSonic fonts, and the Miles Electric device can be found with a simple google images search. I created everything else in Photoshop

After months of trial and error, I have FINALLY figured out M-SPEED! I’ve been able to use it in my speedruns, and it’s honestly so cool seeing Sonic just blast through Savannah Citadel at crazy speeds.
Any tips for a beginner?
You may be late to the party, but you definitely bring something to the table when trying to help someone learn D-speed and M-speed. Great tutorial!👍

I just checked out a few tutorials and did a bunch of experimenting in Photoshop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@sunshinesprites I lost track of those links, but the only tutorials I really referenced was a Photoshop layer masking guide and an Adobe After Effects light ray tutorial. Everything else is pretty much self-taught

I could already do M Speed and D Speed but this is the best M Speed And D Speed Tutorial I've ever watched
WARNING: In some levels you can trigger a Break Jump Glitch (BJG) which it could be triggered by M-Speed, it causes you to gain even more speed in the air, sometimes it will show a black screen for getting out of bounds, which it causes the game to crash with a small chance to make a static or earrape sound.
Even after running this game for 2 years, I find this to be super refreshing and I can tell how much thought and effort went into this. *surely* this will encourage a lot of new folks if they want to get into this game. Great work dude!

I just recently got all of the achievements and S ranks (2 weeks ago approx, not counting DLC stages as I haven't bought them yet) and I'm getting more and more into the speedrun scheme of this game and honestly it's incredible! And the community is really nice.
I haven't practiced m-speed and d-speed in depth but it's really hard to maintain the left analog stick in the same place while pressing other buttons with your right hand. I'll spend more time into it.

I prefer boost drifting, it gives a slight hint of M-Speed and is easier.

4:04 I never found out how to run on the wall there, pls explain or a link (i love ur tutorials)
Just hit the springs that send Sonic onto the wall, then hop over the next set of springs while leaning to the right to continue wallrunning. There's a short collision behind that last set of springs that will knock Sonic off the wall so be sure to veer to the upper right side

This seriously shows how crazy those physics were in this kind of game engine. The low jump height and lack of a correcting double jump didn't help matters if your momentum was off during platforming sections.
Even tho Sonic Colors and Generations toned down the physics to a reasonable level, the latter game still has some dumb nasty glitches.
Edit: The latter game (Generations) even has its levels fail to load properly AND forces Sonic to be snapped-back onto an railroading via many invisible walls unlike in Unleashed.

It took me ten minutes to get the M-Speed right,and I had to tilt the analog with surgical precision.
I imagine how hard it is to execute this during a speedrun...

This is the speed sonic should actually go
So just to clarify. M speed and d speed are tricks that allow sonic to accelerate while airborne. And that air speed carried and used on the ground. So you cannot do m speed or d speed without first going airborne. Also can m speed and d speed be triggered in midair. Like for example, I get a running start and fly off an incline while holding the stick forward fully. And in midair, I switch to the m speed joystick position. Would I trigger m speed and start accelerating? Also phenomenal editing skills, and you're really good at teaching people speedruning techniques!
That's right, all it takes is some air and momentum while nudging the L-stick. You can switch to m-speed/d-speed while airborne as long as you don't airboost beforehand. Glad you found this helpful by the way, it means a lot!

Hello, I just want to say that you are incredibly amazing for creating, editing and uploading such a well-made and high quality (not talking about video quality) guide video tutoring us on how to perform such a conceptively simple yet difficult-to-pull-off glitch/trick AND in such high quality and finesse which makes it seem like a top-paid gaming youtuber had created. This video was so precise, easy to follow, incredibly edited, seems like it’s been hard work to put together AND yet on top of all of that you have less than 5k subs (which indicates your passion for Sonic and not of money like huge gaming youtubers nowadays) that you deserve yourself one extra sub! I know one measly sub isn’t worth much at all (Besides I am picky at subbing to people and usually require 5 good vids to be satisfied enough to sub lol) but great job and please keep it up! I hope the best for you because you have created such an elaborate and precise video that truly helps! Although tbh Im not sure if I could pull it off even nearly as well as you lol, but I’ll keep trying. Much love mate!

Glad you this helpful. The tilt for D-speed is very delicate and it can be tricky to launch, but it’ll feel more natural after going through the motions enough times

One quick question, how u do m-speed but not crash into things, or in other words how do you know where things are? HUGE EXAMPLE: -1:38 to 1:47
If you play the stage enough times, you'll start to memorize obstacles and how to avoid them. You can also alternate between left and right m-speed if you need to quickly change course while airborne

how do you get such fast m-speeds and d-speeds? When I do it mine are quite slow and don't hold much speed at all
For the best results, get a good running start to launch M-speed/D-speed. It can be difficult to pick up speed if sonic doesn’t have that much momentum beforehand

I don't understand why for me M speed works only in Savannah Citadel act 1, I tried in all the others and it just doesn't work, but in that one stage I can do it pretty easily

M and D-Speed doesn't work to me, I do it all right, and it doesn't work. Can you help me pls?
Be sure to gauge your control stick tilt just enough for sonic to walk, nudging it with too much or too little force will not trigger the exploit so keep that in mind. And make sure you have plenty of speed to launch M-speed and D-speed beforehand, it’s much easier to activate with a running start

How often is super speed used in most top level runs? My guess would be nearly all the time
It kinda depends. For ILs and ADS categories, most top runs use superspeed very frequently. Any% doesn't use it as much since a lot of medal collecting is involved.
