I went to Riverside Indian School back in 1983 and a dorm parent taught me how to build a loom and use it, I've been doing it ever since. I love the outcome of this stitch you're showing. I'm glad she said that because my dad told me you could tan a squirrel hide with its brains and make a sting from the hide, an old man had shown him when he was young.
I was interested in your comment about how the leather is tanned using the brain and liver of the animal. I remembered reading this in a survival book one time. I think it mentioned brain but not the liver. This may seem like a weird question, but is the brain and liver of one animal enough to tan the hide of that animal?
What I know from people who tan the leather is that, yes, the brain of one animal is enough to tan that one animal. I don't have personal experience, just what I've listened to others saying. If you're in the area of rendezvous re-enactments you might find people who do this. Good luck! It's an interesting pursuit!

It always annoys me when some people say that a hide is “brain tanned.” Yes, the brains may be used in the process to make the hide, but ONLY to make the hide soft. Smoking the hide is what gives it the tanned color, NOT the brains.
Tanning is the process of processing a hide so it wont rot but is preserved. It doesn't have anything to do with what color the hide turns out to be. Yes, smoking a hide will help turn it brown, however, there are many methods for tanning hides. Brain tanning doesn't make the leather soft, what makes it soft is working the skin to stretch it out to break down the fibers so the leather remains pliable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanning_(leather)
SpiritBear12 the link you attached describes how the Europeans tanned leather, but it fails to discuss the way indigenous peoples of North American tanned leather, to this day indigenous peoples don’t use chemicals to brain tan leather, we do it traditionally according to our teachings. Therefore while the other information you commented is accurate it’s not the historical way native peoples did it, and natives have been Brain tanning for 20 thousand plus years
Well actually it is brain tanned leather, when brain tanned leather is not smoked it’s a white colour, smoking the hide has nothing to do with the tanning process unless it’s the tanning technique you intend to use, in other words, you can be annoyed all you want, but brain tanning is the correct term for that technique

At the beginning you say you draw lines, what do you mean by that, draw lines where and with what, you don't describe that or why you draw lines, also how do you start this project, this whole video seemed rushed and not like a lesson at all.

Hawa’a! This was a very good examples. I bead with difficulty and it shows. I use the two needle method.

Thank you I wondered if you go all the way through now I know to skin the hide and not go all the way through.
I'm having trouble with my needles, it seems I need a lot of pressure to push through the hide. Should I try to soften or thin out my hide a bit more?
