I think Geas also deserves a mention, purely for being in at least partial control of a person for as little as a month and as long as an eternity. Plus, the name reminds me of a type of bird that scares me.
I think Modify Memory is a great spell for any murder hobo. DM: "A noble walks into the shop, seeing you still with your hands around the shop keeper's throat after you strangled him to death for not giving you a discount." Player: "I cast Modify Memory on the noble that he's the one that killed him, and now he is bribing me to keep quiet."
I used Modify Memory and True Polymorph as a backstory a PC. A paladin’s reaching the age of retirement, wanting an heir to uphold his legacy. So he turned his trusty blade into his young, late born daughter. With the help of a celestial woman, they created this paladin a daughter. Her memories where modified of her younger years to well, exist. Her mother was a lie, and her father was technically not her parents in a normal sense. Her angelic-like radiant form, wasn’t because her mother was an angel albeit that’s true it’s because the angel who gifted the paladin this holy weapon, created her humanoid body, and she was a Sun Blade. She was technically raised for 4 years. Her mom and dad fid get marries etc. But she, was the ideal child by creation. She felt robbed of her childhood since her memories weren’t real. Eventually everything worked out since the love is real and they where a family but it’s basically advanced adoption.
Dream is worth mentioning - you can remotely affect any target you know and turn their dreams into horrible nightmares, denying them rest and potentially killing them of exhaustion over time. While the Enchanter dominating people needs to be within sight to do their dirty work and is likely going to be infamous for their craft... nobody will ever find the illusionist slowly torturing people to the breaking point as they can just send a familiar to haunt someone's dreams.

I had Feeblemind on my Bard for a time, but i just didn't wanna break some story plot too hard, i used it one or two time, then i changed it. I felt it could take too much space in the game, regarding the plot, and the other players.
One of the most triggering rounds of D&D I've ever experienced, revolved around whether Studded Leather had enough metal to count despite being Light & whether "most shields" were wood or metal after metalwork became common.
Also worth mentioning: Use Command, and give the command 'Betray.' The results will be very interesting... Also, using Suggestion for a king or queen and making them go Tiananmen Square on their citizens.
The best part about suggestion is that even after the spell, they don't realize they were charmed by you. So, if you use something like subtle spell, nobody would ever know that you ever did anything...
I had this discussion with Dungeon Dad recently, where the Enchantment school of magic was considered the worst. You did a great job with this topic. The music was a bit distracting, but I realize the newer generation like this.
Yeah, I've always found the Enchantment school by far the most evil school of magic. Actually in my current Campaign, Enchantment magic is outlawed completely. This is in an empire where Necromancy is legalized, though it is monitored and requires a special license to practice. Enchantment magic is a massive no no.
To further on the power of Feeblemind, you just... Bestow Curse at 9th level, "Until this curse is removed by a spell of equal or higher, Feeblemind cannot be ended with magical means." This should work as a general one, but if the DM allows stacking curses (cause rules may prove otherwise), curse each individual spell that can remove Feeblemind, then do this collective one. Then toss on a Geas, cause to heck with you, that triggers if a curse is broken. Cause, again, to heck with you.
Imagine using a mix of these spells, like using dominate person/monster to make them do your biding and when they make their saving throw using modify memory to make them think that they did it in their own free will. That way if they didn’t dislike you before then they won’t now. And if you think they’re really intelligent or charismatic and might be able to draw it back to you or charm their way out of trouble, you can just cast feeblemind. It is only recommended using this mix if your of an evil alignment, and nothing else.
I would say that these spells fall into two categories: those that are inherently evil, and those that have incredible potential for evil but could be used for good as well. Would say spells 1, 3, and 5 (and the honorable mention) are in the first category, and spells 2 and 4 are in the second. Was not really sure about spell 1, but I just think there are a lot of other options that accomplish the same thing while being far less cruel.
My Enchantment Wizard has the party torn because she uses these spells all time. Plus of the enchantment ability she can use them on two people/monsters at once. She isn’t evil but it feels wrong to do it. I think that is why I enjoy playing her so much.
so i’m in a campaign where the main antagonists are devils. one session we were doing a this dream fight-our palabard got paralyzed and my protection fighter took a hit for them, which is pretty normal figuring he’s a self sacrificial idiot. one of the devils casted dominate person on him and said “tear them to shreds.” or something-they as in the whole party, but because i’m horrible i decided to have him act upon it as in just on the palabard and he uh. did just start attacking them while they were down! great stuff :) (then a few sessions later palabard got corrupted and cut my fighter’s arm off, so like, they got back at me way more, but w/e. our dm sure does love enchantment bullshit… also those two have complicated history and are basically siblings, so that sure did make things waaay worse)
These spells aren´t evil. They´re simply tools to be used for evil things. 1. Imprisonment is by design a form of prison sentence. Most certainly created to make sure REALLY destructive creatures don´t wreck everything. It does make sense that in a world where Tarrasque, Ancient chromatic dragons, not to mention all the tentacle horrors of the far realm exist, you´d want a spell like that. 2. Modify Memory might be a great spell to create incredible evil situations, but it could ALSO be used as a fast way to handle the trauma of a person. Imagine being able to erase the memories of a R. victim or other sources of trauma. Obviously you shouldn´t use that if ye the traumatizer (cause that´s vile af). 3. Finger of Death is a classic self-defence spell, that even goes so far as to raise the attacker to a zombie. Which is way more resourceful than to simply blast someone to ashes. That zombie can be put to work on a field, can help carry stuff around and the likes. Potentially even getting a value out of the attacker (which can´t be THAT bad lets be honest). HM: Powerword Pain could be of great use in medicine, because here´s the thing. PAIN is an indicator for nerves working. Hence if lets say someone had lost all feeling in a limb, you potentially could use Powerworld Pain to figure out if that´s still working. 4. Enchantment spells are usually a very good means to stop violence from happening or to rehabilitate violent offenders. Imagine you could take someone like Dahmer and in a matter of moments, you magically made sure that this individual can NEVER kill another person. Simply by magical mind manipulation. 5. Feeblemind . Lets be real here, in a world with lunatics like Vecna running around. Having a spell that CAN potentially make sure that those individuals are incapacitated spitdrooling idiots, isn´t the ABSOLUTE worst thing there is. All in all there are no "evil" spells, just spells that if you´re "evil" make great tools for whatever insanity you´re dealing out.
How about paralysis spells? The BBEG can paralyze the party and *force* them to listen to his insane manifesto. That's gotta be worth some psychic (or at least tedium) damage!
A friend of mine told me this, and note I'm gonna paraphrase for obvious reasons. Basically, they would us the spell Command to make them, and I quote the friend, "Commit a very indecent falic act in public". If you know, you know. Basically, whether man or woman you take them out of the fight for a time, depending on the individuals endurance and resilience and such, and if your lucky they lose their pants, and maybe shirt. Different for everyone.
I think I have finger of death in the spell list of a backup character that is a warlock, and I have power word pain as the eighth level mystic arcanum. Well her patron is Mephistopheles, and I was thinking what kind of spells might go with the fiend patron that isn't fire related.
5:44 well my character is a necromancy who wants to take revenge on his tyranical father who killed his mother, and I'm 100% gonna use all of those spell in some order
Wow, that's so cool! Can you make more like this? A total noob at DnD but this kind of videos definitely make me a bit more motivated to try it one day 😄
Honestly, I don't consider necromancy as inherently evil as most people claim. For example, there's spells to bring back the dead, Animate Dead with a willing body donor could be used to create free labor, Speak With Dead would be a go-to for any investigation of a murder, and Clone could stop someone from truly dying. I'd argue that the school of enchantment is the most evil school of magic. You can rob someone of their free will and make them your slave (Dominate Person), you could alter their memories so that they believe something you want them to believe (Modify Memory), you could even cause someone to drop dead on the spot (Power Word Kill), without any way to dodge. Even though there are still some good uses, like Zone of Truth could stop someone from lying, and you can get evildoers to rethink their lives and stop doing evil, without having to lock them away or kill them. There are some other spells I consider pretty evil. Meteor Swarm and Earthquake are useful for mass destruction and murder, Wish can do PRETTY MUCH FUCKING ANYTHING, Heat Metal is quite useful at torture, and Forcecage and Sickening Radiance can be used to cause someone's body to rapidly shut down while taking just long enough for them to feel pain. Of course, it's not the spell, but the spellcaster that's good or evil.
So this isn’t one spell, but a three part combo. Pit, (or hole. Whatever it’s called). Followed by grease, filled by firebolt. Committing war crimes since 1st edition!
Free horrible plot hook : have the PCs ne imprisoned in a dungeon or trapped in a village with an old human called 'Idiot' by everybody, have him be unsufferably dumb an antiproductive in the PCs escape. Have him ask for help but never remember why. Later in the campaign introduce an elven wizard that has rose to the top of magical glory in barely a few month. Have him be antagonistic too your PC. Let them infiltrate his tower to recover a magic item he confiscated them earlier in the campaign. Have them rummage through the mage's notes. Surprisingly their are recent note in elvish and older ones in common that are about high level spells. Have the PCs find their items as well as a ring hidden in a safe. Identifying the ring reveals it contains one charge of the feeblemind spell and one of geas Laugh as your players realise the old idiot they bullied in the village back then was once a brilliant wizard whose knowledge has been stolen and mind robbed by the young elf.
I think Geas also deserves a mention, purely for being in at least partial control of a person for as little as a month and as long as an eternity. Plus, the name reminds me of a type of bird that scares me.
Agreed I wanted to put it in the honorable mention as well, but forgot to include it in the script ^^’

It is for sure, which is why I love it!
It's more fucked up than necromancy in my opinion, which is seen as the most evil school of magic
Except if you are Jester from CR, which remains pure and delightful!
Well, Feeblemind can be life-saving. Sometimes, you just need to give the Weave a break from an abuser. Very easily fixed by Greater Restoration.
