  • Today we shear our dry ewes; the Suffolk sheep and Dorset sheep plus the fall-born Dorset ram lambs. We show everything from set-up of the chutes, how we load the chutes, what we do with the wool, and more. We also highlight some of your favorite sheep as they get shorn. We describe the whole process in detail.
    With sheep farming, there is always something new to learn. At Ewetopia Farms, we try to incorporate learning opportunities when we encounter them as we go through daily life on our working sheep farm. We attempt to show life as it truly is on our farm and to present things with a touch of humour. From lambing to breeding to selecting quality replacement lambs to removing manure to relaxing with the sheep - it is all part of our lives as Canadian sheep farmers!
    I hope you enjoy this video. If you would like to follow along with us and experience life on a real live sheep farm on a daily basis, please subscribe do that you don't miss a single episode! Thank you for taking the time to watch! We love to hear from you so be sure to leave a comment as well.
    Thank you from Lynn (aka the crazy sheep lady) and Arnie (aka the sheep whisperer)!

      Thanks. Sheep usually look pretty tough after lambing then weaning then drying up - they didn't look too bad considering! It's all uphill from here!

    Really enjoyed this video, as a youngster I used to love shearing days we had around 3/4 shearers for around 5 days it was all hands to the deck to get it done as quickly as possible and praying it would not rain.

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  2 года назад

      Yes, we used to do them all at once and it took three days. I much prefer a day a month. Trying to run the farm, shear, and then cook and entertain everyone for three days was just too exhausting!🙂

    took me many years to have confidence to shear sheep

  • @susanmarsh4351

    My entire time as a child was a case of all hands on deck at shearing time. Spent many hours shedding sheep, sweeping the floor, gathering fleeces etc. Shearers lived in and fed three full Neal’s a day plus morning and afternoon tea.
    Now all shearing is run by teams. There is a manager who is responsible for all organisation including transport. Life is much easier for farmers.

    Loved every second!!! And you read my mind Lynn…I’m thinking 🤔 “I wonder what she is making for lunch”…and then you said because Tammy is sure to ask…then my mouth fell open 😂. The video was outstanding. Excellent job explaining the shearing process. 🐑💜

      I just love the personal touch. Pretty sure I'd be in for a career change to shepherdess .... if I only had the infrastructure, the feed, and someone like Arnie to help out. But as it is, I'll enjoy my micro-flock, and watch Ewetopia videos every morning instead.

    Enjoyed the slow motion of the shearing. Like sending a dog to the groomers for their summer cut, the sheep will be soo much more comfortable. Always learn something watching your videos. I hadn’t even thought about lunch. Suppose it’s tradition saved over from days when travel was slower and the shears weren’t electric…shearer was dependent on farmer and even stayed over…?

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  2 года назад

      Yes, we used to shear all our sheep in one go that took oftentimes three days and the shearers would eat, sleep and bathe here.

    Thanks for this full documentary. :) I enjoyed every single second. I'm not sure I'll need to feed my shearer when he gets here. As I've only got the nine sheep, he might not have expectations of much. I'm planning to take the cost of getting him out here, divide that by 8, and try to charge that much for each fleece (one ewe is in poor health, and her wool is likely not worth much). But I'll try to make sure to have a variety of beverages and snacks available just in case.
    He's coming on the same day as Graduation. so I've asked him to come *after* graduation, so I don't have to rush off. I'm going to have my Nephew-in-law (or whatever the significant other of my neice would be called) video tape the entire thing for me. Use that as footage to try to make into a decent RUclips video. I figured that I'd be needed to organize the sheep and/or pick up wool, so I won't be able to video tape anyway (and I'm not that good at it).
    Some of my girls are shedding a bit, especially on the front of their necks from chin to brisket. I pulled out a few tufts that were obviously loose and brought them to school. I offered to let my students touch the wool, and they were quite fascinated by how it felt. They all felt like it was much softer than expected. One of my black students said, "Yeah, that's what my hair feels like before I brush it." It was pretty cool, actually, because even though I live in a rural area, I teach in the city school district, so these kids often don't get much farm-animal experience, and when they do it's cattle or chickens or horses.
    Thank you for this wonderful video, and tell Jacob the Shearer that he did a great job. :) Clearly a very gentle person with great respect for the animals he was working with.

    Nice, Lynn. Do the sheep feel more timid after being shorn or is that as a result of being more sensitive to temperature of surroundings? Always a treat to see how techniques vary slightly between shearers. Thank you!

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  2 года назад

      The sheep are the same after shearing I find. Maybe the day of the shearing they are a little more nervous but I think that is just because of all the excitement and stress of the day.

    On farms in my area the farmers always provide lunch for the hired hands. Saves time and keeps everyone working on the same schedule.
    I bet the sheep feel much lighter and cooler after the wool is removed. Thanks for sharing and stay safe!!

    I enjoyed this video. May I offer a constructive suggestion to improve watchability? Clips where you shout at your dogs or Arnie very close to the camera could be handled in editing and would be a kindness to anyone listening with headphones.

    Nice to see this group. It seems like they were much bolder than this years, visiting you in the milk room and such. It wonder if it was just the 44's leading them astray! I can't believe how warm you are already. I can't wait to feel the heat soak into my bones but 30 is a little warm for me!
