This week’s it’s a full review of Porsche’s mighty 964RS, launched in 1991 and largely ignored until relatively recently, this is one of TheCarGuys’ all-time favourite 911s.
Values of 964RS rocketed in the mid 2010s and have remained high - and unless you were lucky enough to pick one up when it was £30k, you will now need at least five times that to secure one. And a mint N/GT version is closer to £300k! That is crazy!
Whilst driving this track racer, Damian discusses the new Porsche 992 GT3, and whether he thinks he will ever buy a NEW Porsche again.
Is the 964RS coming to TheCarGuys’ garage? What makes it so special? How have the values changed since it was launched in 1991? Can you now import them into America? What are they like to drive? Are there any downsides to 964RS ownership? All these questions and more will be answered in this week’s episode.

Great video and you are right about the pure pleasure of hearing this machine operate. I have a 1991 C2 owned for 22 years, my three kids grew up in the car as daily driver and football, baseball and weekend shuttle for over 10 years until they outgrew the rear seats (backpacks and sports eqipment went in front). The kids showed no interest in the C2 as they got older. I just put it back on the road after 7 years in storage. . . last weekend my wife opened the garage door and found my 21-year old--who has not mentioned the Porsche in over 10 years--sitting silently in the C2 looking longingly through the windshield. Maybe there is hope even for the younger generation to appreciate these old things.
That story has brightened my day
Excellent video and a very honest review as always . I don’t think I will ever to able to buy a 964 RS with the astounding prices these days.
At least I am privileged to own and enjoy a 1990 964 C2. I believe 964 prices are skyrocketing!
For me the 964 is the pinnacle of the 911, combination of classic looks and adequate modernisation.
the good news is that the difference bewteen the C2 and the RS is pretty tiny really. Think of the difference between a 996 C2 and a GT3. Totally different engine and suspension. I'd say you are getting 90% of the experience with a C2
Random guy reading the newspaper standing up by the side of the road at 10.55......great cars
Yes! Well spotted 👍🏻 In the middle of the New Forest...weird! 🤔 He appears again at 11.49 Lol 😆
Looked like the ghost of a Porsche 964 road crash victim to me.
Think he is trying to find his way reading a map
Porsche making GT3s, etc. in small numbers/unavailable is a stroke of marketing genius. Not only does it make people want them more, but it means that secondhand GT3s are more expensive than new ones a lot of the time. Ergo, they can sell as many of the new ones as they want - and get all that cachet, which means selling all the more tarted up VW SUVs with Porsche badges on them for enormous profit.
964 RS is basically my dream car. Lot of the same things I love about my Elise, fun at reasonable speeds.
I had one of these back when they were affordable, tracked it and raced it for 4 yrs. Hobbled by poor settings from the factory dampers on the road and on a hot summers day you will fry. Understeer can be dialed out to some degree by dropping the front and using stickier tyres ( Pirelli C's back then ), then with more front end you can get the rear moving at will. Superb brakes ( uses the Turbo set-up with pressurised servo ), 300 BHP with a few easy mods. Though the seats themselves were good the frames wear out and move in corners. They also have no bump stops on the rear torsion bars so if you have a shock bolt snap you will be driving on three wheels, as I discovered at about 120...
Sold mine for £ 20K in 2004...
I would go Ruby all day long ! So much more character these old Porsches to the modern stuff. Makes you feel alive !
Thank you Damian for a great video. I sat and watcted it in one of the calmest moods I've been in for a long time. This was so soothing to watch. Proper old school car, great review. Keep em coming.
Glad you enjoyed it, Paul. I picture you sat back in the blue beanbag 😀👍
Loved the older Porsches like this one, they were kind of cool and rounder looking, great looking cars.
"Kind of cool". Um no. They are very cool.
The ruby stone is a lovely colour
I agree, better than the dark blue.
This is my al time dream Porsche. Maritime blue is one of the best colors porsche ever had
Stuck in quarantine and not able to drive my own 964 so decided to watch this again. So good.
Thanks, Allan - glad you chose us for your entertainment. There's over 200 CarGuys videos on the channel
I fully agree with you on the size of cars. Parking spaces are getting smaller and cars are getting bigger... It’s the reason I sold my BMW X5. I got so frustrated with its size. Just buy the 964 RS. You know you’re so going to appreciate it...
Back catalogue suggestion; 987 Cayman R manual, bucket seats, hydraulic steering, 330bhp. This would have exactly the old school feel that you talk about a lot, with benefit of mid engined.
I concur on this one!
As cool as the latest Porsche are, these older Porkers are way way cooler. Can't wait to see one of these in the car guys garage. If it were me, I'd be after a yellow or Rubystone 964!😍
My favourite shape 911. Had a few models of the 964 when I was young. Probably the closest I’ll get to one!
Classic Damian in a classic Porsche. This is what I look forward to every Friday. Watch the video a second time to catch all of Damian’s great descriptions and expressions.
👏👏👏
I remember having a ride in a friends uncles 993 RS nearly 18 years ago. Still haven't forgotten how fantastic that car is
I have to agree with you all the way on this one, Damien. I would love a RS but, I am so thrilled with my 93 964 Carrera 2 and my 73E MFI that no "modern" 911 has any appeal for me. My next P car will be a 356 and then I am done.
Cannot fault that logic, Jeffrey
The 964 Carrera RS in Maritime Blue is one of my bucket list cars that I’d love to own.
Love the 964 and Porsche actually sent me a copy of the 911 Story by Paul Frere for pointing out their power/torque curves were wrong in the early 70’s from my terraced house in Wigan (not for the 964 mind). Anyway love the Porsche vids and maybe one day I’ll get one.
All the best, Dave..
It’s telling that old cars are engendering a greater sense of experience
I cant wait to see what older Porsche you get in the future maybe a 928 v8s in Black 🤞
i owned in rubby stone red with the roll bars. best car I ever drove. Get a 964 turbo 3.6 you love it
Hearing you say, "shit out of luck" was very surprising and also entertaining haha!
👍🏻👍🏻
It looks and sounds absolutely amazing. An utter spaceship and achingly desirable.
By the smile on your face driving the car , rowing the gears and your laughs sounds and looks like you should buy this car
So much enthusiasm.. so many smiles.. that's why we love watching you driving and talking about great cars.. but we do miss Jason.
I was so happy when l managed to sell my RS for 30000 gbp in 2005. Not happy now tough
My condolences
One of the best reviews ever. You are so right, you will not need any other Porsche.
Thanks, Ralf
The smile and the sounds you make after 12.40 just caught me off guard hahahaha
Remarkable how similar the comparisons are to modern Ferraris. The old ones were full of drama and driver appeal whereas the new ones are seemingly targetted towards
social media stars and their never-ending 1/4 mile, 0-60, and top speed claims.
There is no way you can use a Ferrari Pista or McLaren LT765 etc on the street with dash without losing your license fairly quickly.
All the fun is between 40mph and 80mph anyway unless you live at the end of an Autobahn.
More classic cars please guys...this Porsche is an epic driver's car. Try a similar road in an Aventador in Australia and see how long you'd last :/
Again, an awesome hankering for past masters. Great video highlighting the charm and brilliance of cars where greatness has peaked.
Glad you enjoyed it
By far my favourite, loved them when they originally came out...can’t wait to see yours eventually 👍
Love these. I've never driven one but there's something pure about them that really comes across in this video.
Right on!
Thank you Damien. I really enjoyed this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great car, great review, Damien. Had one for 10 years and let it go. All you said is spot on. Personally I think it's not for a car for "everybody", since you really have to be the type that appreciates the noise, the harshness etc. If you are, there is no substitute. Will get another one for sure, and so should you. Good luck with finding that Maritime Blue car.
👍🏻👍🏻 thanks, mate
Very nice review.
My dad had one of these (white) imported to California.
The old prick has quite the 911 collection.
Damian, you knowledge on these cars is truly impressive, to say the least. However, not sure about that particular example, with it's firmer & lower ride? But agree with you about new Porsches...suddenly, they are starting to disappoint, and the dealers even more so. Great vid! 👍🏻
Thanks, Peter
Amazing car. The 3.8 RSR is the grail but the RS is the next best, just waiting for the prices to drop back down to earth.
Saturday morning with the Car Guys....nothing better. Thanks Damian 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it Thanks for watching, Neil
Looked like you were having an amazing time ...totally agree that in the back catalogues there are some fantastic cars 👍
that's an absolute dream. One day, I'll have mine too
Good decision....I prefer the older Porsches also right up to the 996 gt3rs. Considered getting a Singer? That will be in my lottery win plus an Alfaholics GTA-R!
I've owned mine for 10 years and its is without any doubt (and I've owned +10 Porsches) the most visceral driving experience of any Porsche I have ever owned!
Right these 964 rs cars came up on my radar in the early to mid 90s when they were coming on the uk market pre- dominantly in left hand drive guise for what was outrageously cheap for some if i can remember going for sub £20.000 in Blue ,Pink etc so i knew at the time they were a Marque but i never had the cashflow !!!! Btw Walter Rohl classes the 964rs as one of his all time greats
Can't wait till you and Jason can get back into a car together love the interaction between both of you
Ikr, the videos don't seem camp enough without Jason 😂
None taken
Rubystone... i love that colour! Mint green and Maritime , love them. Great stuff Damien.
Could you expand a bit on why this is the third best? How did it differ from the 1st and 2nd? Was the suspension tighter, the steering more accurate? Was there a reason such as higher mileage that made this less desirable that the other two etc?
Yes Damian, a trip through the Porsche heritage will be great. Would be good to see a couple arrive as permanent cars to the garage as well...
That would be cool!
This channel should have a million subscribers
I'd settle for 100k right now. The long and winding road.
I own Maritime Blue 964RSNGT and amethyst peal 964RS also. I’ll keep my 991.2GT3 Touring for long time together with those x 2 of 964RS , and just skipped 992GT3 allocation slot while ago. But getting a 1972 2.4S Oil Flap instead 😉
I heartily approve of all of this - top man! 👍
@@TheCarGuysTV They will also stay with my x2 of 993RS(CS) and 996GT3CS together, and one day my daughter will take everything over. (she hates all the RSs and GT3s I have now, especially roll-caged ones, she says they are all bloody harsh and noisy😂)
@@ast7500 would you let Damian make a video with the 993 mate?? Adore the 993RS well done mate, well done ✌️
@@tomnutting3836 yeah, indeed, interesting to see the comparison video. 993RS and 964RS😉
The Grey Goose of content, and I'm only a third of the way through! Thank you, Damian.
Thanks, Mark 👍👍
The Turbo out of Bad Boys would be my choice for an older Porsche they are just so much cooler no corporate culture it was about how it was to drive funnily enough lol great episode Damien
Thanks, Jim
Great video. Lovely car. I quite like the silver colour personally, but certainly the Blues are cool. Be good to have one of them sitting in the Garage prepped for a fang
Great video! Loved ur commentary. Learned a lot 👏🏾
Glad you enjoyed!
Spot on Damien, I can't stretch to a gorgeous 964 RS like that but instead I treated myself to a 997.1 manual, it's so much more enjoyable than newer cars, and still perfectly practical. Damn those Porsche engineers, they're just too good! That 964 RS is just incredible though.
Couldn’t agree more
Fantastic video and clearly a future 964RS going to your garage when the right one turns up. Rubystone red for me.
Another great upload from the car guys. Always liked this channel going back to the phaeton 5.0 tdi review
Much appreciated!
I can see the attraction in the older Porsche models, as there have been so many great cars. Your Turbo in the collection is still the one I would have. Porsche Carrera GT incoming perhaps ?.
Definitely don’t like the size of the new 992’s. 911’s were always meant to be inherently small
Safety regs are to blame for that.
That was a very detailed and interesting Review! Even when I disagree about Rubystone Red here. My friends RS has exactly that color :-D
Thanks for watching!
not sure why you'd even want the 992 GT3 when you have the touring, it's almost the same thing. this is a whole different experience
Yes! Was waiting for a Porsche video this week! Thanks Damian :)
You're welcome
That was great Damian I’m with you all the way having owned a dozen odd new Porsche’s and currently have three still in the garage and I also agree the Touring is one of the best Porsche’s I have driven also I’m looking at some of the classic oldies as are a number of other people I know here in Australia with Porsche’s. Keep up the great content I think you guys have one of the best car you tube channels along with Harry Catchpool cheers Terry.
Thanks, Terry. We try.
Seems like this is going to be a fun journey through Porsche history and is ultimately going to end up with a Singer.....🤔🤔🤔
Or a Theon. He is a little patriotic.
@@karllo9116 the CEO at Singer is British.
@@SRT54 didn't know that. Thanks.
Those older cars are wonderful. I bought a 964 after having a 997 and will give it to any of my children in the future if they ever would care to keep it.
Great, a real engineered marvel, Porsche at there best! Purity! Thankyou!
👍👍
You certainly sound convincing ! Yes there definitely are quite a few gems in the 911 history. 👏
Great video Damian, I love this vintage of Porsche, although that looked a bit of a workout at low speed. My favourite would be the Guards Red 964 that appeared first. Please keep up the fantastic reviews, your choice of metal to test recently has been awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it, Alastair
That "connected" feeling seems to be missing from most modern autocars. What a beauty. The prices are getting crazy. Need find a time machine, and go back a decade when these were somewhat attainable... :-)
I'd buy tickets for that time machine
@@TheCarGuysTV Working on converting a hot tub to that. Need to find a Flux capacitor that generates enough Gigawatts. ..
Just so much cooler than a current Turbo S. Love old Porsches.
Nice vid. Next one, 964 Turbo maybe? #badboys
Thanks, Luke
See if you can find a 928 GTS, late model in manual. That should be a good peddle and it should also be a proper sorted 90's sports car. A 993 turbo should also be a proper quick car even by modern standards and would be fun to see where it stacks up. Same for the 964 turbo, which is probably quite a rare car in it's own right. Modern cars are great but, and this might be me just getting old here, they push the performance envelope so damn high that you can't really get there, resulting in a car that always feels like a big fish in small aquarium. Plus I think they're beyond the abilities of most of their drivers as well. Who really has the reaction time for 100mph in 6s if someone pulls up in front at 5s? I do believe the late 80s to late 90s will be remembered as a sweetspot for classic cars, so much character there, so useable. I was a kid of the 80s but most of the stuff I would really want was contemporary with me being a, unfortunately rather skint, adult. The earliest thing I would lust for is a Countach 5000s.
Good choices
If you don't get on with the low speed steering on a Lhd 964RS, the UK Rhd 964RS came with pas from the factory. I assune you are poised to bid on the RS rep (rhd) Collecting Cars site has up for auction in a few days?
That's true
Yet another fantastic review would love to know why you preferred the red and blue cars over the silver one other than colour and the suspension ?. Thanks guys x
Both felt tighter, more together mechanically, better damped, quicker, more responsive - just better all--round.
What a car. One of my favourite wheel design these. Great video.
Thanks! 👍
I’m with you. Had some very poor experience with Porsche Centre Hatfield. Had similar bad experience with Porsche centre Guildford. All I can conclude is Porsche Retail Group sucks!
Love this! Mint green, Yellow, then Ruby Stone Red. Love this content! (Side note: curious some time if you guys discuss the amount of tech in cars these days, screens all over the place, menus within menus. What about these old days when a car was just a car? Have we reached peak tech when the market demands more analogue, like the 911R)
Great review. I'm with you on the classics. The only new car I'd spend my cash on is a GR Yaris. My money goes to the classics. I just can't get excited about hybrids and EVs.
Well said!
Always great content when you feature these "nuggets" Well done Damian. Well done indeed.
Glad you enjoyed it, George
Much cooler than any modern 911. That and the 996 Twin Turbo are unsurpassed in coolness
Next week Damien visits 2005 and drives a Clio 182 Trophy and compares it to his Williams 3.
Williams 2
@@TheCarGuysTV Apologies
Sometimes people are lucky. A friend bought last week a like new 2015 991.1 GTS 300 miles on the clock. the last non turbo, Carrera. So sometimes it is still possible to buy a new Porsche.
You could choose between 3 different thicknesses of glass. You could even order them with no interior & a full cage if you wanted! Beautiful little cars! My all time favorite is the 964 RS 3.8 which is the epitome of Porsche air cooled....👍🏻💯🏁
I'm looking forward to your drives of Porsche past greats searching to fill some garage slots. I'd like to advocate for the 997.2 GT3 RS. However, when you said Rubystone is your least favorite color, your entire judgement is now in question. :)
😀
Would love to see you do a back to back comparison with this and your 930 turbo.
Good idea
Hey did you just say "Fairy (Ferry) Porsche dust" ...? Love these cars, want badly.
Superb video - the perfect combination of wittering and beanage in a simply stunning car :D
Glad you enjoyed it
Has to be maritime blue for me too , right hand drive ....
I can dream 😂
I like the way this is going , old school all the way 👍🏻
Enjoyable video Damian.
The new car's do nothing for me whatsoever - Give me a 90's or 00's car any day.
Cheers,
Chris
Fair enough!
Love the video and review Damian. Keep up the great work guys ✌🏼
Thanks! Will do!
Superb video Damian! You really made me feel as though I was experiencing the car.
You mention the 992 a few times; but I am curious about which you prefer (if you could only have one), the 964RS or your current 991.2 GT3 Touring?
Thanks again!
Glad you liked it, Rob. Overall I would always take the 991.2 Touring, but the 964RS offers something different and fun.
Great review and a fantastic understated sports car - parked up that is - love silver .
Glad you enjoyed it

Not much can beat a boxer 6 engine in a 1230kg chassis. But just ... maybe ... my crude Corvette C6 V8 LS2 in a 1450Kg chassis is pretty close.
I love the rs Damian ,my late father had a 1989 carrera 4 and i loved it
Brilliant 964 rs old school.motor
All the best cars... All the best video's Thank You :)
So nice of you
I like silver, and the sound is exquisite...
