Yes so true. I think that pinarello is really fast, because it is also aero. I think a light (not too light) but stiff bike is the way to go, with the most aero position posible for the flat part. I would mount bars with deep drops higher. Why? Because for this hillclimp I want the drops to be at my normal most power efficient hoods position. The hoods should be high enough that I can replicate Graeme Obree's old faithfull position, that is super aero. It saved him 50 watts back in the 90's (!), and tested in 2018 against modern track stuff it was still faster (ie, body position is everything, round tubes vs aero tubes!!). I could make it lighter than everyone else and more aero at the same time because body position is the awnser here; together I save massive watts everywhere. This in turn will make my perfect hillclimb bike, no matter the course, even a flat TT is reltively fast and doable. Allthough I would calculate Any time savings from weight and aero savings against each other and see what is fastest, depends on the course also
Where are the required lights on Chris Hall's bike? I don't see them and thought they were required? The blue Emonda, love how the person stated that it isn't a bike build but rather a labor or love. Think it captures the essence of the bike perfectly rather than having people attack it because of his unorthodox modifications. Love seeing the hand holding up the bike in the (not-so) glamor shots. Favorite bike on here probably goes to the Cervelo. Most functional bike out of this group. Took what was already a pretty functional bike and made even more modifications using mass-produced parts available for anyone to use rather than niche one-off components that changes the perception of the bike.
I went even further than these weight saving efforts and removed a kidney for the event (10 kilos saved) . Unfortunately I didn't PR, so I'm going to re-install it next week.
LOL we do this climb racing Helvellyn Tri middle distance/Half IM so its towards the end nice 40mile bike section (30mile ish) and just before having to run up Helvellyn for a nice 10mile run 😵💫
It's always super interesting watching these videos about those uci illegal climbing bikes. The only question that I ask myself is, why they tend to position their hoods so far up the bar. It's something i've seen a good amount of times now, but only on these Hill climb only bikes. Is there an advantage of positioning the hoods that upright when climbing?

how does the fork not wiggle lose on a hill climb without a compression plug? I thought the stem cap clamped down on the headset bearings and kept it all together? Aka, how does one ride a bike sans compression plug?
the compression plug has 2 jobs: 1) adds in vertical preload before clamping the steerer. 2) prevents crushing of the steerer when clamping, once the stem is clamped on tight the compression plug doesn't do much to hold the system in place. It does provide resistance so you don't crack your steerer though.
UCI should make it an official sport with anything allowed in terms of bikes. Similar to the rules they have in the UK Would be fun to see hill climbing world championships, we would need a shorter steeper sprint distance and a longer bit flatter time trial distance. Gonna be a fun one!
Definitely not the only SL3 with internal cable routing. I have 2 friends that did it a few years after buying theirs. I'm sure MANY others have done the same
Why would you want internal routing... Such a faff as a normal rider. I would only want it in a race. Why not external routing in a grove nd a cover. Now we hve best of bith worlds👍

For all intents and purposes YES a bung is essential (and a safety issue) with a carbon steerer, you need it to both set bearing preload and resist the clamping forces of the stem. It is possible to remove it after the stem is fitted, it's a very bad idea in normal circumstances to do so, but on a bike built just for organised hill climb events where many of the other risks are minimised for some it's a risk worth taking, for me personally it (along with "Drillium" on modern parts) would be a psychological disadvantage as I'd be worried something is going to snap every time I put the power out. You have to understand for a lot of (maybe even most) dedicated hill climbers the "fun" is mostly about building the lightest possible bike within the rules and often within a tight(ish) budget, some don't even care about beating their PB as long as the bike is lighter than last time!
Is there a rule that states they've got to have two brakes, because that seems like an easy way to save weight for a hill climb, easier than sanding down the paint on a carbon frame...
@@danjee464 I use TT dual control levers, a a friend of mine with mech uses some old 105 duals, smaller, gutted and modified to have the lever more parallel to the bar. Now I'm moving to single speed.
5:12 No headset expander. Please, do not ever do this! There are serious reasons why bicycles have an expander. One is that the carbon of the fork is not meant to be compressed toward the middle of the section by the stem. When the expander is correctly placed and you tighten the stem, the carbon of the fork immediately meets a resistance and the applied forced only compresses the carbon between the expander and the inner walls of the stem.
As a DH MTB Hobby rider, I know this exhausting moments, when you finally arrive at the top of the mountain, and you have to take a deep vape off your medical cannabis, to slow down your adrenaline, while stepping out of the gondola / Lift at the summit 😂‼️ My biggest respect for these riders, they are doing really the hardest way, to practice their hobby and passion of biking, uphill!! But for real, to save 200 gramm extra on your bike, we DH Biker have a secret solution.................. 🚽💩💩💩 In the morning, and bam, I safed 240 gramm, Bio mass............. But in that weight Amut range, it's only working out, if you're not vegan🤣😂👍👍‼️‼️
I suppose there isn't anywhere to hang your dropbar shifters. Not that I'm against thumb or twist shifters but it seems road shifters are the way to go because of the ease of use and dual functionality.

Carbon shifter clamps-BTP-Schmolke etc. Very sketchy and cant take much weight so offset by shortening shifter leverage

There is that exact rule. If you ride a fixie you only need one brake, however.
When I see chopped bars, I don't really understand why not use a TT bar and levers like I do. It's stiffier, you can put more power and is much safer.
