Gravely Model LI 10HP Repower - Complete Build

  • In this video I repower my Gravely Model LI with a Briggs and Stratton 1450 10HP engine. With this spare engine and parts lying around the garage, I manage to finish this repower for under $100.

    Nice job updating an old Gravely to be a practical machine and far better than any snowblower you could have purchased for $200. Gravely had Briggs engines on newer 4 wheel tractors.

    I always use duelies and chains in snow . when I developed the brake rotor spacers in 2015 I had the same issue with input drive adapter letting go first time I used a snow blower . I ground a channel perpendicular on pinion gear shaft then drilled off center hole through shaft coupler and pined it through the channel and holes .and tacked the pin to shaft coupler. those hardened pinion shafts are hard as can be you would need serious tooling to do anything super nice . If I do another brake rotor adapter instead of trying to get the nubs on the inside of the brake rotor in place by welding to the cast rotor I would drill it and tap it and use cap bolts with the heads inside at 4-6 places to replicate the ring/lip on the original engine face

      The floating ring as a flange has worked really well for me. I installed it 24:52. It was a $15 piece and it saves you from having to do the hardest part of the gravely swaps, which is replicating that lip.

    I applaud your technique. The most critical part is getting the shaft aligned precisely. Respectfully, your method was a little cringe, but you got it nearly perfectly aligned. Kudos. When gravely started using non-T-head engines they found they had the same problem as you did - the tractor wheels rotated too fast. The T-head engines have roughly half the RPM output as more modern engines, like your Briggs. The joke at the time was that they switched from a walk behind to a run behind. Gravely corrected this by changing the gearing on the rear with different planetary and pinion gears. I’ve seen a few conversions but yours is simple. I would have never thought to use a brake rotor and yet with a few simple mods it works great. 👍

      I’ll admit, this method isn’t the easiest. This was really just some cheap experimentation before the gravely bug really settled in. A proper adapter plate and a machined crankshaft is the way to go if you can manage it.
