Those early '70's Lions, JJ Williams, Willy John McBride, Phill Bennett, Gareth Edwards, Fergus Slattery, Andy Irvine, Gerald Davies, JPR Williams, Mervyn Davies ... I'm a Saffa but I concede that they could beat anyone on the day - they were brilliant, they could run rings around any team. I was very fortunate to see them in action as an 11 yr old. They gave us a hiding on that tour.

It's a shame that Mike Gibson, Gerald Davies and David Duckham didn't go on the 1974 tour, those three in the back line on those fast pitches.

The Gerald Davies try is , for me, the best here and great work in the lead up from JPR and Mike Gibson.
Davies’ acceleration over the first 25 meters is insane! Great to watch.
Mind you Sean O’ Brien’s try in the 2017NZ 1st test is as good as it gets.

Was a little guy in 74 when the Lions visited SA's shores and all I remember are the JJ and JPR names that went about demolishing the flat footed Boks...awesome side Willie John McBride captained--fortunately the 1980 tour saw the Boks back to form and Billy Beaumont's side was humbled by an awesome 80's Bok side that performed fantastically despite the isolation period--then 97s non accurate kicking Boks blew it but redeemed themselves in 2009...now for 2021s visit--can't wait as these 2 sides will be formiddable...pity the Lions couldn't win the series in NZ in 2017...

    Hey Real Rugby
I've thanked you several times for your good work and I see you continue to post. This Lions series coming up reminds me of the anticipation there use to be with incoming/outgoing tours between our countries. I know those days are in the past but I hope the Boks can one day soon regain their 'juju'. We can bemoan politics, the modern game, commercialism or whatever else but I guess I just hope for something to reinvigorate what was.
    Cheers to you Sir

    • @RealRugby
      @RealRugby  7 лет назад +1

berry107 Thanks so much for the kind words and the support. I've thought about it a lot and there is definitely an opportunity for teams to go on long tours, even in the modern game. As a die hard Springbok fan, I would love for us to play the All Blacks once every 3 or 4 years only in a three test series. I think that will generate a bigger hype as opposed to the Rugby Championship, which has become watered down in my opinion. I hope the Boks can get their aura back, but I'm a little pessimistic unfortunately... Oir issues are deeper than just political interference. Players are going overseas in droves as our economy just cannot compete. Combine that with aggressive quota targets and you sit with a situation where the best players will never play in this country. If only World Rugby had the balls to say something about politics ruining our game, they were quick to condemn us in the 70's and 80's, but now they are quiet. We need the Springboks to be at the same level as the All Blacks. That's just the way it should be. In saying all that, I'll always support my team, so I can only hope.... Thanks for the support!

In my opinion, the two greatest Lions sides to ever tour was the 1971 side that beat the mighty All Blacks at home in a test series for the first time. Winning all 25 provincial matches and only losing one game to NZ in the 2nd test. The first Lions tour began in 1908. And on those eleven occasions, the Lions failed to win a test series in NZ until 1971. I have to mention, the Lions played a match against a Queensland side before arriving in NZ, losing to the Aussie. But apart from that, The Lions finally won a test series in NZ. Later on the core of this squad would go on and humble the mighty Springboks in South Africa with a clean sweep of all the provinces and the test series. 21 wins, and one drawn against the Springboks.
They demolished all the provinces including the Springboks in three test, and controversially drawing the last. The Lions should have won that last test. The ref disallowed a try by one of the British forwards, This would have made a clean sweep of 22 matches, won. Rather than 21 won, and one drawn. I rate the 1974 Lions side the greatest side to ever come out of the British Isle.

@@NoName-hg6cc The clear disregard of Scottish players who deserved a shot in 2013 and 2017 tours was an utterly disgraceful contradiction of what the Lions is supposed to demonstrate, and should never have been allowed to happen.
There was some redemption (after realization) in the 2021 tour by selectors, but there are still many, many SRU fans who are unconvinced about the Lions to this day.
The Lions legacy has been severely damaged north of the border as a result of this short sighted negligence.

Appropriate proportion of tries scored against the All Blacks in there - hard to find, aren't they? ;-)
That said, I think you're going to have to replace the Underwood try from 1993 with today's try, started in your 22. It was magnificent, one for the ages like the French scored against the ABs in 1994 or the Barbars scored against the ABs in 1973.
In terms of individualist tries, it's hard to choose between Jason Robinson doing Jason Little on the outside in the 2001 first test and BOD's try against Australia in 2001. Both divine.

Huw, I believe you can see the try that you're describing starting at 11:22 in the video here: ruclips.net/video/hIkZy92bL-k/видео.html
Third test in Wellington was won 13-3 by the Lions after captain John Dawes chose to play with the wind in the first half, and the Lions stunned the home fans by racking up 13 points in the first 18 minutes.
According to the 1971 NZ Rugby annual (my dad bought me a copy for my birthday in 1971) Barry John scored a famous try similar to that which Brisqidaust describes on the same tour against NZ Universities, also played in Wellington. BJ scored 21 points (1 try=3 points in those days, 3 conv, 3 pen, 1 drop) in that game, won 27-6 by the Lions. There's a photo of him dotting down between the posts beside referee Barry Dawson. Also an amusing story of how he found two right boots in his kitbag only a couple of hours before kickoff, and his teammate John Spencer was sent back (with police escort) to the hotel to get his missing left boot.
