Lots of people asking where the Nikon lenses are this year! Good question. Unfortunately they haven't been able to loan me some of their latest and best new lenses this year yet (e.g. 85mm f/1.2, 180-600, 60mm f/6.3 etc.), so I couldn't include them this time. I absolutely loved the Plena lens, but its corner sharpness got pipped to the post by the Canon 135mm (although I did actually prefer the overall look of the Plena's images, sharpness aside).

Great job, Chris! I've got a similar type episode planned for December. It's fun to go back and look at the year's reviews and relive a bit of it. It is dificult to not have tripod legs in the frame or your own shadow but a day of chasing waterfalls was so much fun and incredible sharpness. I also recently bought the 1st generation of 85 mm 1.4 Samyang, 2nd hand for just 320 euro and used in once for street photography, very much fun and good sharpness also !

This was a lot of fun, thanks for your consistently good work - super enjoyable.
In my own little world, my three `best` new lenses of this year ...
Essentially tied in overall excellence, fun factor, but most of all what shots they enable:
    - nikon z 135 f1.8
    - voigtlander z 50 f1
Coming up close and a phenomenal value:
    - viltrox 75 f1.2 (x-mount).
Suggested new category ... manual focus. Might be unduly influenced by voigtlander lately, but they sure are bringing some real game.

I have a Hanimex 28mm f2.8 which was with a bunch of lenses and camera bodies I bought as part of an estate sale. Mine looks different than yours. It is a C/Y mount lens and has a green line near the front of the lens barrel. Mine is quite a good lens. Reasonably sharp and good enough for me. It has an "MC" printed in green on the front which I assume stands for Multi Coating. Maybe yours was a bad copy or it had some other problem. I quite like my copy.

The issue is that Nikon haven't been able to loan me the best of the lenses you've just listed yet (85mm f/1.2, 180-600, 600mm f/6.3). If they don't loan me the lenses, I can't afford to cover them, and they have to wait for next year's list! Hopefully I'll get to cover them soon. I've tested the Plena lens and, as spectacular as it is, it wasn't quite as sharp as the Canon lens in my tests, if you look back at the reviews.

These press trips aren’t usually much of a break. It’s hotel to coach or car (usually at some awful early morning hour) to venue, press briefings, back to car or coach and hotel. (Often after the bar’s closed and your only resource is the expensive minibar or a horrid vending machine.) I’ve not seen many beautiful places on press trips. A lot of hotel bedrooms all over the world that look exactly the same, though.

Any chance for L-Mount lens tests? Yes, I am glad you are testing all the Sigmas, but it would be great to also see Panasonic and Leica SL reviews. This would make it complete for full frame, as you are testing Canon RF, Nikon Z and all the E-Mount lenses. In addition your overall categories would be complete, as I am sure some Lumix and Leica lenses would make it on your top 10 lists, for example Panasonic 50/1.4.

Chris, I wouldn’t bother replying to those who make a habit of accusing every reviewer of being ‘paid for’ by one camera company or another. It happened when I was a print mag reviewer: though there were far fewer in those days, just because they had to buy the green ink, paper, envelopes and stamps 😅 and now it’s free. I learnt long ago you can never convince them they’re wrong. Likewise, you can’t convince them a press jolly doesn’t come with any demands to be favourable to the product. Just an occasional sad ‘Oh, did you HAVE to be so cruel to our X thingy last year?’ at the bar the next time. . .(Sometimes followed by a whispered ‘off the record’ ‘Yes, well, it wasn’t that good, was it?’) And there usually IS a next time: no company ever ostracised me or declined to send me product because of an unfavourable review. Though one or two wouldn’t send me product because their marketing departments didn’t think I had the kind of readership-or the numbers-they wanted.

Have to give it to canon for beating previous great 135mm fast lenses from sigma, samyang and sony and even zeiss to achieve virtual perfection wide open. I'll have to stick with my trusty sigma 135mm art. I was going to get sony's 135mm GMaster having tried it and found it wanting for nothing in any department, but it may pay to wait a bit and use my dslr sigma.

@christopherfrost Thanks. I still didn't find it there, but I had a suspicion. Turns out the RUclips Android app doesn't show the e-mail address. I had to switch into incognito mode in my browser to start RUclips as a website, login, and then, finally, RUclips showed me the e-mail.

Looks like you conveniently forgot Nikon. What about the 135mm Plena lens or several other Nikon telephoto lenses?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  11 месяцев назад +5

Not sure what you mean by 'conveniently' here. Nikon haven't been able to loan me their newest tele lenses for evaluation yet, unfortunately - and, as I mentioned at the beginning of the video, I'm only including lenses I've actually tested. Hopefullt I can test them next year. The Plena is incredible for its character and bokeh characteristic, but not as sharp as the Canon 135mm f/1.8, if you look back at my test results

In the sharpest lens 2023 category, was the 300mm Sony accounted for? This lens is being praised for it's finger cutting sharpness, that's why I'm asking.

@@jeroenvdw Oh, you're right! Must've made a mistake while thinking too little :) I've seen a lot of videos about the 300mm. 400mm f2.8 is my dream lens, which makes the 300mm a nice second place.
