    Great video!
    I have a few questions about this
    1. Our band is doing a silent practice setup (mainly due to noise issues) and I was wondering if we could monitor plugins in real time within reasonable latency. So for example if I’m using my guitar, could I use say Bias FX to monitor with the band?
    2. If the Zoom is set to interface mode, is there any way to have the signal from the DAW go to the monitor outs? So the band could monitor and hear each other with the headphones.
    3. If so, is there still a way to create custom headphone mixes for everyone whilst still working with the DAW? So if I wanted to increase the guitar volume only for myself, but not everyone else, can I still do that while working with the DAW?
    4. I’m still rather confused on how usb audio return works. What does usb 1-2 and 3-4 mean?

    I'm still not sure how to do somethings. How could I get my computer's audio out to USB3-4/Channel 11-12 instead of9/10. For organizational purposes it'd just be easier and clearer to have the last channel be computer audio.

    Hey Matthew! Thanks for creating this series. I'm considering picking up an L12 but I can't seem to find a clear answer about how windows sees (or doesn't see) the L12 as a sound device. Can you help? When you connect the L12 to windows, does windows register one or two playback devices (9/10 as device 1 and 11/12 as device 2)? Everyone is talking about DAWs (which is fine) but I'm trying to route sounds through windows for non DAW projects. Thanks!

    Nice setup Matthew, I would love a similar setup. I would probably pick the QSC TouchMix 16 as my mixer, Akai MPC Live, Yamaha Mod X 61 or Elektron Digitone, Waldorf Blofeld is a maybe, it’s cool and I do like the Moog Minotaur. For guitar I would love the Fractal FM3 with FC6 Foot Controller but on a tighter budget maybe the Line 6 HX Stomp and Morningstar MC6 or RJM Mastermind LT as the larger midi foot controller. Kemper Profiler is awesome too. If you do love your Avid 11 Rack, I guess you could use the HeadRush Pedalboard or Gigboard as they share some DNA & they also have looping which may replace your Boss/Roland unit. So much cool gear, so little money, space at home & time to play & create, lol. Thanks for your videos, great & informative. Cheers from Australia \m/

Had to install and uninstall the Zoom drivers muiltiple times, connect USB to Macbook and get it recognized by Mac OS X Ventura then get Logic Pro 10.7 X to recognize it. Very painful process you have to assign same inputs from Zoom to each audio track in Logic X such a pain in the arse to setup!

    Hello Matthew, nice to talk to you.
    A question for you about the L12.
    I am a guitar player,
    I have a Zoom L12, when I open it in Pro Tolls in interface mode, I have the clear impression that I am hearing the sound of the mixer/master and the return of the softwere (pro tools).
    - Could you tell me how to make it so that I only hear the return on the program?
    (for example when I'm playing a song, or just adjusting the timbre of my guitar)?
    I use the output (Master OUT) for my audio monitors.
    I didn't do anything.
    Thank you for your attention,
    Carlos Costa

    Hi there - I recently starting using a L-12 Livetrack as the audio interface for my PC. I have a mic and guitar going into the L-12 and then a usb going to the computer. I also have headphones plugged into the L-12. I have the L-12 setup as both an audio input and output from my PC, so that I will be able to hear the computer audio as well on the headphones plugged into the L-12. My issue is, periodically the audio from the PC to the headphones drops out, and I have to power off and on the L-12 to get it working again. Any idea what could be causing that? Thanks

    Hello, I hope you of all people could answer my question.
    I want to buy the L-8 but nobody and I mean NOBODY has ever been able to tell me what I want to know about INPUTS and OUTPUTS.
    I use just one MIC let's say IN 1 all other stuff will be coming out from my computer (Windows 10), I want to send specific applications (iTunes, VLC, Nintendo Emulator) and other apps that make noise to each of the channels --as you do with windows sound settings panel--. How am I doing that now? some trickery with an Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen, ASIOLink pro software and Windows Sound Settings and mapping each app to a different ASIOLink pro input.
    The I pass it for processing on to REAPER which I have setup some plugins for noise reduction and EQ stuff.
    What do i want from the L-8?
    I want it to show as 8 INPUTS and 8 OUTPUTS not only on my DAW but on Windows so i can send apps and all that stuff to independent channels on the L-8 and control that sound coming out of the PC with Livetrack's faders. Can I do that?.
    I need to assign windows app to separate channels and bring those back into OBS, I'm currently using REAPER as a virtual mixer I do livestreaming to RUclips and I want to get rid of REAPER because of hardware restrictions, can the L-8 do that?.
    Many thanks for your excellent products.

    • @MatthewStratton

      The L-12 has USB 1-2 Return to tracks 9-10 and USB Return 3-4 on tracks 11-12. There is no USB return for every single channel. Similarly if you look at a picture of the L-8 there are markings that say USB return 1-2 on channel 7 and USB return 3-4 on channel 8. It is likely these work the same as on the L-12. You can only send sound from your computer to the physical mixer using the USB returns.
      This does not have what you want. You cannot have 8 outputs.

    I was very excited to buy this til I noticed there was no AUX out/return for external effects, it should have at least one, and a stereo in (tape/CD in). Also, given that the EQ is digital, why limit the cutoff to 100Hz? Make 3 sweepable bands which the user can define, one going as low as 45Hz. Gonna wait for a new version.

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  6 лет назад

      agauerm well looks like the L-20 may have more EQ options with the new Bluetooth app for the iPad. Haven't looked too much into the details, only the promo video. No aux sends or returns though, only extra headphone outputs. I agree, there should be some kind of option for exernal effects that do not take away from you already limited 12 inputs.

    I have a couple of questions. Is there any possibility of using it as an interface and hearing your local performances with DAW effects? Or alternatively can you record to the onboard SD card and hear your performance with reverb, for example, without printing the effect?

    great info here, thanks ! i'm still thinking if i will buy this considering i already have the R16, one consideration is it automatically becomes an audio interface (no more switching like r16) and the 5 headphones. money money money ! does this have a Direct Monitoring feature during tracking?

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  6 лет назад +1

      Anything you plug into the mixer and hear through the master out of mixer is direct monitored. You can leave the USB return off and just monitor the live signal from the mixer into the master output. You set the record levels in the software.
      If you want to monitor just the processed signal you can use the USB return, and turn all the other input levels down on the mixer.
      It actually makes a lot of sense in practice. You can track a band and monitor everything live with out the latency of the computer. Then you can go back and make edits to the performance.

    Hi Matthew I am currently running a Behringer QX1222usb to livestream with and such and looking for an upgrade. I know most things would be an upgrade over that guy but i am kind of looking for the end all be all solution as an hobbyist.
    So i see this can also be used as an audio interface. When hooked up to the PC i how many sound cards does it produce in the playback section? I know my QX has one audio playback and one in the record for the usb return. Basically I want to seperate audio. I want mic to be on 1 and maybe 2 then run like game sound to fader 3, musik on 4 and say skype or some kind of human interaction to fader 5. I can then set my levels on these and return them as a mix back to the pc so that whatever platform I am braodcasting to hears the mixed version of it and will give me the ability to have more control over my stream audio. I know i can record at the same time to a sd card where i would be able to cut out say the music channel to not infringe on any copyrights and such and make better youtube videos in general.
    More importantly is just the ability to send over multiple channels from my PC without going the weird way I do it now. I have game going over USB, I have my skype going over my headphone out to one of my stereo channels and then musik i actually use a tablet to stream music to a seperate stereo in.
    As a hobbyist I just dont want to spend the big money on an RME sound card and such as that kind of blows the bank for something I just do for fun.

      So the L12 shows up as 14 inputs. One for each channel and one for the master output.
      If you join the facebook group for the L12(zoom product guys are in there) you can ask about broadcasting in there. I know some use it for this. I don't know much about broadcasting and don't want to give wrong advice.

      Hey Matthew, I don't know if you are around there, but I've the same question, and not sure about your answer :D
      As you got the product (and, hopefully, still have :D), I want to ask the same once more, but in a lightly different way:
      When the L-12 is connected to your Windows PC as an "Audio Interface", I know that in any DAW software, you'll have access to all inputs, BUT, if you go to Windows Sounds management, where you can see all the sound card, speaker, microphone, ... how many devices do you see for the L-12 ?
      I got the ZOOM UAC-2, which in DAW software, can saw the 2 inputs, but in Windows sounds, I only have one "line". Hope you can answer me on that :)
      Thank you.

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  6 лет назад

      there are 6 options. 2 channel 16 bit, 2 channel 24 bit, 2 channel 32 bit. AND there is 14 channel 16 bit , 14 channel 24 bit, 14 channel 32 bit. Hope this helps. 😀

    • @Athar42
      @Athar42 6 лет назад

      Yeah, I think it does, so it'll not fit my need, sadly. I wish I could get separated input from there, but it's "all or nothing" (almost). Only DAW software can get the direct input line so :/ (my software only saw the standard Windows audio peripheral).
      Thanks for the info anyways, will need to find something else :D

      Hello. If you look on tracks 9/10 there is a button that says USB Return 1/2. If you press that and the outputs 1/2 of the DAW will be on channel 9/10. Make sure your fader level is turned up on on tracks 9/10 on the L12 and make sure you have the outputs 1/2 are turned on in your preferences of your DAW.

    Thanks Matthew for the video, I have a question :
    Can you use LiveTrak (in interface mode) just like any other typical audio interface?
    Do the MASTER OUTS provide decent quality to connect to the studio monitors for mixing and mastering purposes?
    as I was reading comments below I got confused .. because you said somewhere that you are still hearing the dry signal ...
    is it possible to hear only the processed signal in DAW when I'm recording guitar DI with Livetrak?
    Thank you in advance

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  6 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment. To answer your question: Yes, the LiveTrak can be used in interface mode just like any other typical audio interface.
      Yes, it is possible to hear only the processed signal in DAW when recording guitar DI with LiveTrak. You have to plug your guitar into channel 1 or 2. Set your gain. Slide the channel fader you have your guitar in down. Turn your USB return on and turn the fader for usb return up. USB return=only the processed signal in DAW.
      What gets confusing is that you have to use at least 2 of the 12 audio inputs as a USB return to hear the processed audio of the software.
      Keep in mind that you have to have the Master Fader up to hear any audio (direct or processed).
      Master Outs. From Zooms website:
      MASTER OUT:
      Type: XLR jacks (balanced)
      Maximum output level: +14.5 dBu
      Output impedance: 100 Ω
      I am using the monitor outs which are quarter inch outputs. From Zooms website:
      MONITOR OUT A (TRS):
      Type: TRS phone jacks (balanced)
      Maximum output Level: +14.5 dBu
      Output impedance: 100 Ω

      Thanks Bro
      it really helped
      i still cant understand the logic behind turning up usb return fader to listen to the Master track of DAW while naturally it should goes into master outs directly from the software ...
      Whats your Opinion ?

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  6 лет назад +1

      It can be useful to have it on it's own track. For example you can put custom headphone mixes to the separate headphones using your live instruments as well as your software. You can record your live instruments separately and your software separately to the LiveTrak and mix it on the LiveTrack if you want. This is a mixer, and a recorder, and a audio interface (not just an audio interface). So it functions more like a mixer by having the USB return on it's on channel.

    Hey Matthew, don't use analog audio cables with a computer, that is just bad.
    And unnecessary If you have a USB interface.
    If you want audio directly out of the computer, always use Optical SPDIF.
    As a musician, you should choose your mainboard by whether it has a built-in SPDIF connector or not, to avoid having to buy and install an SPDIF card. Unless you have a high functionality mixer like the A&H SQ-5
    If I remember correctly, the L12's audio interface implementation is sadly a weak spot on that mixer... For a low cost mixer+audio I/O, the Soundcraft spirit MTK are better suited, for DAW use I think.

      Matthew Stratton I have 2 ART 4x4 power conditioners. I also have a VooDoo labs Mondo for guitar pedals. I record into an iPad pro which runs on battery and i’ll power my Presonus iTwo with a phone charger battery thing if i’m not at home and experience noise. I have found that since i stopped using my pc and/or laptop for recording multitrack stuff i have way less noise issues. All the wifi and bluetooth stuff create potential issues...i think. Proximity to the computer you are using can cause issues too. Guitar pickups are magnets, right? Good luck.
      P.s. are you still happy with the zoom? I wanna buy one in the fall.

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  6 лет назад

      Yeah, the only time I get the ground loop is when I connect USB cables to my L12 and MPC LIVE. There is definitely a ground issue related to USB ports in the computer. Standalone I have zero ground loop problems. I tried connecting the power outlets in all different wall and in different rooms. Nothing helps. My wall outlets are grounded. I don't think the electronics in the computer are grounded properly. I am not electrician or I would find a way to fix them. When I connect things to the usb ports of my mac mini i don't have any ground loop issues, and that is why I think it is something inside of my computer that is not grounded properly. too bad my mac mini takes eons to do anything on or I would just use that.
      The zoom L12 is definitively useful. A solo function would be nice and a way to have a send and return for effects would be nice. You can use the monitor out A as a send and and tracks 11/12 as a return for a work around. The biggest plus for me right now is being able to record all tracks to the sd card. SD card is a simple way just to record a song and post it. Plus it makes it easy to record my voice on a microphone and music on separate tracks to make RUclips videos. You can do the same with the USB interface (which I may do in the future) but then you have to use software and I just don't want to use software right now 😝

    • @thechronicnoizeco.6675
      @thechronicnoizeco.6675 6 лет назад

      Matthew Stratton i would just record to the sd card and then transfer the stuff i want to mix further over to the computer. That is my plan. Zoom announced the L-20 yesterday. It has solo buttons and two separate fx things.

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  6 лет назад

      Right. The solo buttons are nice. And the extra fx is nice too. It has more effects types as well. No option to send and return fx though, in cases where you may want to use a compressor for side chaining for example. The L-12 also can use the same rack system as the L-12, which is a plus. Also, has the option for a bluetooth adapter in case you want to use your iPad. Just depends on what you want to do. There are several other mixers that can send multi channel out USB as an interface (Behringer has one, presonus has them, soundcraft has usb multi-track options), where the LiveTraks shine is the ability to record to individual tracks to the SD card.

  • @dmuseing6392
    @dmuseing6392 5 лет назад

    For me the whole point of buying the L12 is to get away from the computer. Also Less noise too.. then when you have all your tracks done transfer by way of SD card all the individual tracks to your DAW for mixing. Otherwise just use any audio interface and keep recording with your computer and don't buy it.. Just my opinion. It would be a huge waste of money to use it as a interface.

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  5 лет назад

      Cool. The SD recording feature is the best feature on there to me. Use it weekly. It is nice that it does both, good if you just want to buy one device for multiple purposes.
