You point out something in passing that's one of the many great things about Kirby; he drew in his own language. Some point in the sixties he'd devised his own look for cityscapes, for machinery, for energy, for water, practically recreating reality from the molecular level upward. Something that people don't often mention are those undulating shadow forms he drew on the floor, sometimes as a design element, sometimes to indicate menace, sometimes just his way of drawing shadows to tell you where the figures stand. It had a number of cool results, not the least of which was creating a sense of dynamic movement or tension in a tableau where everything was otherwise standing still.
Really helps to thing of his use of blacks as a kind of language! Awesome.

Great episode Ed and Jim! Thanks to the The Kirby Estate, The Jack Kirby Museum and the great efforts and guidance of Scott Dunbier at IDW, I was able to concept, design, photographed and produce this book (credited in the front of the book). The pencils and inks was a concept I proposed many years ago as I became involved as a Trustee at the Kirby Museum.
Some notes: Pencil copies of spreads at this time were not done because they did not fit into the auto feeder of the copy machine, yes, they'd stack all 10x15 in pages of original art on the top of the copy machine and hit the copy button. I will confirm with Mike Royer but I believe he would write the dialog on a separate piece of paper and letter the page. Generally Jack did not make the copies. His assistant Steve Sherman and possibly others would. Great to see this book on display!
What an amazing resource this book is....!! What a blessing to see the original pencils...!! Inkers are sometimes called finishers because not only do they ink the original pencil lines but they sometimes embellish or even add new lines/shading to the penciled artwork. Also when an inker uses a brush you are no longer seeing the pencil lines or shading but brush strokes which are very different from the 2mm lead tip. It's inherent to the process. So looking at a finished panel is a very different experience from looking at a penciled panel.

I always liked Jack Kirby's work but the older I've gotten the more I've appreciated his work.
There's a reason they call him a master, and a King!
Have been a Kirby fan since 1976. He was drawing and amazing Captain America run back then. I'm glad that I was able to shake his hand at his final ComicCon appearance back in 1993.
I tabled next to Mike Royer at a convention once, talk about a nice guy! Dude had stories for days, and he was just so excited to be a part of the comic community.
I have this Kirby original art book and I love it totally recommend this to anyone who has a respect for the King of comics. I was a kid in the 70s I would find the back issues at flee markets Omac and Kamandi was awesome, the first two issues of Demon are some of my favorite memories.

This is a great episode, I love all of your Kirby coverage! I don't have much of Kirby's work, but your 2001 ep had me so hype that I searched on Google Play for some to check out then and there. Instead of Kirby, I came across Tom Scioli's American Barbarian and that's something really special. I'm still pretty light on the Kirby comics, so off I go to reread American Barbarian and the issues of Swamp Thing with Etrigan. Swamp Thing and Etrigan in Hell?! C'mon that's good times!

kirby's double-page spread compositions are my favorite. i wish he had some ambition for fine art, because i would love to see how he would have translated these sorts of compositions onto giant canvases.
Sucks that this is sold out everywhere, really wanna see his penciling up close.
Edit: one year after this comment, I found this brand new at a local comics store for $32. It currently goes for $200 online. I scored so big, thank you guys for putting me on to this.

2 things :
1 ) There is an article (in a recent issue of Kirby collector) about kirby layouts and there is something to the effect that Kirby is one of the first to regularly use the 2 page spread in the 70s.
2) are you guys going to do a Kamandy artist edition episode? hope so!
They did a great vid on a page of original Kirby Eternals art. Kirby was drawing two page spreads in the 1940's.

Saying Kirby/Royer's lettering inspired Graffiti Artists in the 70s is a huge reach. I really like Kirby but let's not rewrite history here.
