  • Actor and Uvalde, TX native Matthew McConaughey spoke at the White House Press Briefing.
"This moment is different. We are in a window of opportunity right now that we have not been in before. A window where it seems like real change, real change can happen. Uvalde, Texas is where I was born."
While discussing the victims of the recent school shooting, McConaughey's wife Camilla holds green high-top Converse shoes of the one of the Uvalde, TX victims. "These are the same green Converse on her feet that turned out to be the only clear evidence that could identify her after the shooting."
He also says, "Can both sides rise above? Can both sides see beyond the political problem at hand and admit that we have a life preservation problem on our hands?" And, "America, you and me, we are not as divided as we are being told we are. No."

He’s using his performing skills as actor to help tell the story of the victims’ families. To be up there on national tv in the White House with all those pictures, letters, list of names (getting everyone’s names right), documents, etc. can be super nerve wrecking for the average person. He’s flipping through everything and not making any mistakes. He doesn’t need the fame or publicity, he’s already a major success and one of the most famous people on the planet. He’s dedicating his time and energy to make sure the voices of those families are heard. We complain about celebrities not using their platform to raise awareness, then complain when celebrities use their platform to raise awareness. A lot of you need to get over yourselves and appreciate what he’s doing for those families.

Kids bled out in the hour, his high powered semi auto weapon allowed him to shoot all of them in under 4 minutes. He then used firing the gun through the thick classroom door, set in a steel frame, that swings outward to shoot 2 of the 3 first officers who came to the door, then used it to keep anyone else from breaching the door that can't be opened wo keys. If the 19 had taken turns kicking a door so solid it won't open we'd have not 2 shot officers but 21 shot officers. Reality sucks, the hardened door locked everyone out, windows were waist high so if officers had tried that way we'd have 19 shot officers, probably many dead. What could've helped, ISD officers w keys and ballistics shields, then they'd have been able to get in and render aid in a timely manner.

I don't believe that anyone could have given such a speech but McConaughey. The combination of his home town, his history as a Texan who used firearms responsibly, his skills as an actor, writer and director all come to bear in this performance. And I don't use the term 'performance' as a pejorative here, because it TOOK a performance to move the people that would hear it. It may be one of the most important performances of his life and that was obviously not lost on him. I'm disappointed in many the assembled media people though; after hearing those words, there should have been a moment of respectful silence instead of the shouting of a bunch of people who needed to make the moment 'about them' somehow. I hope I live long enough to see us do better.

It particularly resonates with me when he says something along the lines of “we need mental health care, more secure schools and responsible gun ownership”. The ENTIRE NATION of Australia immediately got behind the brand new gun laws. And gun owners and hunters even voluntarily participated in a gun buy-back program instituted by the Australian government!
Gun violence is all but unheard of over on Swiss cheese land! Why?
Because they have an even stronger sense of gun responsibility than even Australia does! The Swiss cheesers who own guns ARE part of a militia (The Swiss Guard), and MUST train and actually BE "well-regulated" (meaning, proper ranks, discipline, training, etc). They must also be subject to weapon inspections. Ammo cannot be stored in the same location as their firearm. And the Swiss are extremely proud. As they should be.

I'm crying. I'm British where Dunblane stands alone, tragic and always remembered but alone. Its memory an inspiration that brought change. I'm British, and the recurring tragedy of these mass shootings playing on repeat with so many lives lost is unfathomable to me. I keep hoping that maybe this time something is different. Change will come. The Parkland kids were and are an inspiration and they fight and fight but America seems determined to keep this on repeat, not do what needs doing. And more lives are lost. More futures unrealised. More dreams left behind. I hope that this time change comes, that the strides fought for with tears and blood cross that line at last and change comes and lives are saved. Dreams are lived and futures realised. It does not need to be this way. It should not be this way. And hopefully some day it will not be this way.

Most people I know are anti capitalism, which is often seen as far left... ... ... they believe in fiscal responsibility, but they also believe on increasing taxes on the wealthy on people earning more than half a million dollars a year, not anyone underneath that level, they do believe in expanding how much the government spends but in a responsible way that reduces wasteful spending, they understand this means that voters would need to better hold elected officials to account. They do want to expand the role the government takes on but in a leaner way than they do even now... They do believe in universal healthcare which I feel like is quite a contentious subject, but they do as it will reduce costs for 70% of Americans and enable more Americans to get healthcare when they notice problems instead of when they have to go to the ER for those problems.
What I have discovered through having civil discussions and even civil debates with people who are more on the side of GOP politicians initially is that they don't seem to really believe in the things the politicians or Fox "news" believe and broadcast, most agree on raising taxes even if their limit is on those earning more than a million dollars a year, they do believe in expanding the number of tax brackets that exist so people get taxed at a fairer rate, that healthcare should be available to everyone even if it's just that a public option that has a sliding scale cost attached to it (so the lower the income the less you pay in the premium.) which is a brilliant idea that is already in place for those on disability but work either part time or full time.
