  • We had been to Yellowstone 3 times prior and never seen a bear. We saw tons of other wildlife but never bear. We saw tons of bugling elk in September and October. After doing research found it is most likely to see bear in spring so we went in May. If anyone has differing opinions please put them in the comments. We are definitely not experts but got really lucky in May to see plenty of bear.
**This sounds ridiculous but we found bear when we saw multiple people sitting on the road with huge telephoto lenses. If you see a crowd and traffic jam highly likely it is a bear. If you are stuck in a traffic jam but don't see a crowd could be a bison jam.
**Once we saw the momma bear with her 3 cubs we found that the bear would be in a similar place in the morning and evening. Have others experienced this as well?
**We brought a $250 Panasonic camcorder with a 50x optical zoom to make sure we didn't miss any great shots. We didn't want to spend a fortune on Camera equipment and didn't have a phone with a good zoom at the time.
**We didn't see nearly as many elk when we went in May as opposed to when we went in September and October. If people want to see elk would recommend September or October during the rut. For bear would recommend May. Would love to hear different opinions on this.

It is interesting to see the difference between non-zoom shots and zoom shots. Love the video of the 3 cubs.
