  • In this voyage log, Crank It Crew Producer Holly and her boyfriend Rory join us as we take on part of the Calder and Hebble navigation. Along the way we learn how to use the hand spike and even race our boats against each other on the river! Then I get bored and paint my boat, read a saucy book in the launderette and drink some delicious unfined beer in Pub of the Week.

    Our boat Mouse is moored at Brighouse basin. I was hoping to spot her in the video. Unable to go to her because of lockdown so I have enjoyed watching your journey in the area and spotting familiar sights. Holly, Rory and dog were scrubbing their boat on the water point at Salterhebble last weekend while we were parked up eating a McDonald breakfast just before they closed. We laughed when the dog brought a stone to them put it down and fell between the planks on the landing stage. One very puzzled dog!

    Cheers Robbie, another great video. Your natural humour and personality always lifts these above the general level of canal vlogs.
    Also, you may have inadvertently invented yet another batshit crazy English summer sport- freestyle narrowboat racing!
    Unless there are hire boaters who have been doing this sort of thing every summer since the very first day that one man gave money to another man to borrow his narrowboat..?
    I don't see it gaining Olympic status for a while, but it looks great fun. Slow fun, but great.

    Great video - as usual! About those spike gears on the paddles...I watched the recent Minimal List video on their C&H trek and a CRT dude told Michael and Joe they could just 'drop' the paddle as opposed to 'gearing' the paddle down - go figure. Anyhoo...glad to see your surviving the recent 'cloud bombs' of water that's been dumped on your neck of the woods. Take care - be well! Ciao

    No offence Robbie , I love your films but I couldn’t believe that you used the wrong end of that spike , even after that guy clearly showed that you hold the tapered end, which makes sense as it gives you a better grip. I must admit it really cracked me up , but great video, all the best mate, and don’t forget fat end goes in, oooow Matron!

    • @colinwilkinson2811
      @colinwilkinson2811 5 лет назад

      I agree, you should have put the fat end of the spike in the capstan to fill up the square hole, (7.30 mins in) this would give you more control and make the spike last. Otherwise you will be bruising/damaging the end you should be holding. Love your BBC4 series, best narrow boat program showing what it really like. So pleased you have another series coming up.

    I kept thinking about the video NBH made about the Calder Spike a long time ago. I wonder how Phil (I think!) is getting on and if he’s still between boats 😁. The river looked so beautiful in the video. I’m feeling very envious of your lifestyle. Mind I was feeling the same when you were in Venice. Maybe I just need a holiday! Thanks as always for sharing your adventure.

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  5 лет назад

      Yes sounds like you need yourself a holiday Sylvia! Phil is in good spirits, have spoken to him a couple of times and even tried to set up a trip on my boat but his MS unfortunately seems to get the better of him I think.

      Robbie Cumming luckily I have a trip to Prague arranged for next week! I’m going to see a Russian clown Slava Polunin, if you’ve never heard of him google Slava’s Snow Show it’s amazing. If you like mime of course! I do and saw Marcel Marceau at the Royal Festival Hall many years ago. I’m sorry to hear Phil is unwell. I loved his channel and saw your episode where he helped you on the river Ouse l think! I know he’s probably already aware but would you mention Dr Roy Swank’s treatment of MS using a plant based diet. There are good articles on Dr T Colin Campbell’s nutritionstudies.org website and Dr Michael Gregor’s nutritionfacts.org website. Hopefully he’s already familiar with this work but just in case he’s not I would appreciate it. Thanks very much.

    It looks lovely up there. I am missing summer :( I have a spike on my boat, it was on when I bought it and it used to reside in Pocklington, York. Apparently there are two types and the other is a Driffield Spike. No idea which one mine is. I was going to donate it to someone for firewood as I didn't know what it was until I watched a BoatTuber video..
