Tarja and Marko are the perfect match to this song for me. They both kill it. Tarja‘s voice is more operatic than Floor‘s and it‘s a matter of personal taste which voice you like more. Tarja‘s voice is more suitable for me in this version, because this song is about the OPERA. Love the colour of her voice.

Marko kills it. Markogasm is not an unheard of term. LOL
Floor has NOT done Phantom with Nightwish. Henk was going to join them at the Nightwish concert in the Netherlands to do it, but postponements happened when the world turned upside down.
They are all Finnish except Floor(Dutch), Annette( Swedish) and Troy(UK)
The show was 2005 in Helsinki, Finland. After the show, the guys gave the open letter to Tarja, dismissing her from the band.
Try 7 Days to the Wolves from the Wembley show. Or a couple songs with Marko on lead vocals, The Islander from Tampere and While My Lips Are Still Red from Wembley.

If I recall correctly, the guys in the band didn’t want to do “Phantom” after Tarja left because it was just too personally tied to her for them. Same with “Swanheart.” Interesting that they finally agreed to do it again after Marko left, I wonder if he was the one who didn’t want to do it again or if Floor just wanted it badly enough.

Just to name a few. There’s so, so many more. I mean they have nine whole albums to pull from.

Part of the reason Tarja was “drowned out” is just that she was performing while she had the flu AND a throat infection-so definitely not at full power, but super impressive nonetheless that she maintained so much stability and was able to hit the notes at all!

    Great, you're back at Nightwish!
Marko is indeed one of my favorite singers. Nightwish, Tarot, Delain, solo, Waltari, Therion, Northern Kings, Sapattivuosi or lap steel guitarist Mika Jaakkola etc. He is always excellent!
Last year, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) was asked in an interview who made the best Black Sabbath Dio era cover. He replied immediately: Marko Hietala. After a short break, he added: Marko is a good singer. So, if the godfather of heavy metal says that, we can believe it!

    Hi Guys!
The Greatest Show On Earth is absolutely on the must see-list. Live from Tampere, Finland. Another song that I would put on that list is Shudder Before The Beautiful, live at Wembley. Acoustic Heart cover, Alone, live on a small venue with Floor singing, Marco and Troy on guitars and Kai playing something is a must see for me. There is a studio version of that same song with just Floor which is also exellent. This list would go on and on as long as I keep writing. Dont worry guys, you still have a lot to explore.

Besides Poet, the remaining "MUST hear" from Nightwish would be "The Greatest Show on Earth", the third corner of the Nightwish triad (Poet and Ghost Love Score being the other two). It's also their longest song to date (over 20 minutes...the fastest 20 minutes of your life!!!). It's another that you might do a little research ahead of time, for the general idea behind the song. I HIGHLY suggest the 2015 Live at Tampere (fFinland) version for all the extra goodies.
    Here's a version with lyrics...

What most people don't realize is that Nightwish covered this song on their 2003 album "Century Child". Because of that, Floor and Henk Poort were using the Nightwish arrangement that was used ON THE ALBUM for their performance on Beste Zangers. The performance at End of an Era in 2004 was an actual live performance of the song, based off of the arrangement used on the album. In the musical, Erik (the Phantom) was portrayed as a troubled soul, and that was mainly it. In the Nightwish arrangement, Marko portrayed him as sinister, as people forget that the Phantom is responsible for someone getting killed! So Marko plays up that sinister role. Plus, there is a bit of a BDSM element to the song, as the Phantom keeps telling Christine to sing, and she keeps singing higher and higher.
It was all of these arrangements that Tuomas did that had Andrew Lloyd Webber say that this was the best cover of Phantom of the Opera he had ever heard.

Nightwish has a long band history with one special incident, newcomers will stumble upon sooner or later. Their first era (1996-2005) ended with the dismissal of their legendary primal singer Tarja Turunen. The band came into life, when Tuomas (keyboarder) asked Tarja to join his band project along with his friend Emppu (guitarist), after they finished school. They were visiting the same school and had been sharing stage together already with their music class, e.g: ruclips.net/video/mNRahGTlE6s/видео.html. After appearances on local platforms and promising demos, Nightwish sent to record companies, they received the chance for a record contract and more nationalwide gigs. In 1997 they decided to add two more local musicians, Jukka on drums and bassist Sami to grow into a full band.
There had always been speculations about a possible relation between the head and main-composer Tuomas and his muse Tarja, he wrote tailor-made songs for. Yet considering Tarja's choice on men, that may never ever happened. In 2000 she started to date Marcelo, who became her manager and in 2003 her husband. Marcelo once stated, that Tuomas couldn't stand him from day one, as he was jealous on him. Yet both men couldn't be more different at all. Marcelo, often descibed as a blow-hart, roughneck versus the shy, introvert dreamer, Tuomas used to be. So Marcelo started to separate Tarja from the band, announcing that Tarja will leave Nightwish after their next album for a solo career. Yet Tuomas was no longer be able to write any more songs for Tarja, so the band opted for her early leave in 2005, also to get rid of Marcelo as soon as possible. There is footage from their very last concert in Helsinki 2005 on RUclips (e.g. Phantom of the Opera). Watching their fanbase you can imagine how devastating the fast spreading news were amongst them, so even the Prime Minister of Finland needed to comment on their break-up.
"Never replace a legend, but the replacement of the legend" is the best description for their follow-up prime vocalists (#2) Anette Olzon (2007-2012) and (#3) Floor Jansen (2012-present). Although the band maintained their revenues due to two very successful albums "Dark Passion Play" (2007) and "Imaginerium" (2011), Anette fault turned out to be just the intermediate between the two legendary Nightwish singers. For many like me, current singer Floor Jansen is the incarnation of Nightwish, as she is mirroring the versatility of Tuomas' songs in a way, not even Tarja could have done better.

    • @MacZussie
      @MacZussie 2 года назад +1

*** Lyrics normally are connected with personal experiences from a poet's life. In this context songs dealing with an unrequited love theme, e.g. "Ghost Love-Score" seem to comprehend Tuomas' relationship to Tarja in a way or another: "WE used to swim the same moonlight waters...a SIREN (Tarja) from the sea came to me ...sang my name my longings...forgive the adoring BEAST (himself)". Longings like in EVER DREAM. SHE'S MY SIN speaks for itself. Dark fantasies from that beast regarding forced love like in DEVIL AND THE DEEP DARK OCEAN hear mermaid Tarja screaming "leave me be". Of course the appearance of Marcelo was SLAYING THE DREAMER (Tuomas), so he needed to get rid of his childish longings, e.g. "DEAD" BOY'S POEM: "I wish, I wouldn't feel for you anymore". Don't be fooled that critics from fans and media are the sole reason of thoughts about suicide as in THE POET AND THE PENDULUM, if there wasn't an overall depression following his unrequited love theme. Whenever you want to experience our shy, introvert dreamer Tuomas as angry as he gets then be ready for the song he dedicated to Marcelo in the aftermath: MASTER PASSION GREED.
I won't close those aspects without mentioning Tuomas' personal happy-endings. In 2009 he met his wife Johanna Kourkela, a classical trained singer (seems to me like he kept his dating rules), whom he married in 2014, after the Nightwish' Imaginerium World Tour. And, of course, he hit the Jackpot for another time, when he was successfully inviting Floor Jansen. Initially the predictive album with Tarja "END OF AN ERA", I guess, was meant to him to stop writing love songs regarding his emotions for Tarja, as she had married in the meantime. Tuomas "the ear" Holopainen heard Floor's potential, since her primal band "After Forever" was their support band on Nightwish 2002/03 tour. Floor's true and faithful character wouldn't have allowed her to leave her band, so Tuomas needed to be patient, maybe another reason why Anette remained on guest singer status after their first tour "Dark Passion Play". Although Anette improved her live abilities significantly at the second tour "Imaginerium", her pregnancy was the game-changer. At least since Tuomas/Marko heard, that ReVamp, Floor's band-project, she had been chief-cook and bottle-washer, needed to cancel all of their gigs in 2012 indefinitely, due to Floor's break-down syndrome.

Glad to see you back on your Nightwish journey. End of an Era was the name of the DVD/live album from their last tour with Tarja. This was the last show on the tour. The band handed her “the letter” backstage after the show. The band is Finnish, Tuomas, Emppu, Marko, Jukka, Kai, Tarja are all from Finland. Anette is from Sweden, Troy from England, and Floor from the Netherlands. So much more greatness still to discover. This performance was recorded in 2005, but the band decided to post it on their own channel just a year ago, after one of the unofficial videos posted by a fan surpassed 70 million views. RUclips didn't exist at the time the Nightwish albums with Tarja were released. She recorded the band's first 5 albums: Angels fall first (1997), Oceanborn (1998), Wishmaster (2000), Century Child (2002) and Once (2004). In addition to these albums, Tarja also recorded the band's initial demo in 1996, the group's first EP and two live dvds. There are shows not released on dvd here on RUclips. They were recorded at major festivals like the 2002 Summer Breeze Festival and 2005 Lowlands, for example.

One of the best reactions I've seen was by a person who knew nothing about the backstory or the band, and the worst were by people trying to over interpret the history. This kind of song fits Tarja much better than FJ. The same thing with classical pieces like O' babbino caro mio and Vilja lied. E.g. Phantom of the Opera favors Tarja's ability to sing spacious high notes. You can hear years of classical training. IMO, it would not be very clever from the band to bring this song on the stage with FJ - the original version of NW is so strong.

The poet and the pendulum has to do with Tarja and the episode of her resignation. According to Tuomas, "The poet and the pendulum" was the way he found to deal with the depression after Tarja's departure. The band, and especially Tuomas, received a lot of hatred from all over the world. They lost a lot of fans. I'm going to summarize the story for you to understand why people's reaction was so negative. Tarja's resignation was a very dramatic episode. The relationship between her and the band had been bad for some time, so at the end of 2004 Tarja decided to tell the band that she would leave. The idea was to record one last album and go on a farewell tour. She wanted to announce her decision to the public and prepare fans for the vocalist change, however, Tuomas convinced her not to do so at the time. It turns out that, after that meeting, the band planned a public firing on the sly. The group wrote a letter of resignation full of attacks to Tarja and her husband. They delivered this letter to Tarja at the end of the "End of an era" show and posted it on the band's website the next day. It was a scandal. In response, Tarja wrote a letter but did not attack the band. She also held a press conference to respond better to the group's accusations. Her husband also spoke. He answered more than 150 questions from fans around the world and posted the answers on the internet. Given the reports that were brought and other available records, including videos and documentaries, a large part of the fan base revolted against the band. Faced with criticism from different sides, Tuomas fell into a depression and wrote "The poet and the pendulum" as a way of dealing with the situation. Some say that Tuomas suffered from unrequited love for Tarja. This feeling would have been the fuel for the composition of some songs. The question of Tuomas' love for Tarja is actually an old theory of fans. This theory was built even before Tarja's dismissal, and is based on old interviews (see this one, for example: ruclips.net/video/gt0haAiGbHo/видео.html) and on the lyrics that Tuomas used to write. The idea of the existence of unrequited love was strengthened when Marcelo himself (Tarja's husband) spoke about the subject in the responses he gave to fans. The depression itself and the song "The poet and the pendulum" can, in theory, be read as a reflection of this love drama. Regardless of whether this theory about Tuomas is true or not, the fact is that bringing internal issues to the public was the worst choice. A lot of the band's past has been brought up and no one has come out unscathed. Because of the scandal, Tarja lost some fans and contracts for her solo career. On the other hand, the band also lost fans and had little-known events brought to a wider audience. For example, Tarja suffered an attempted sexual abuse in the middle of a concert in Guadalajara in 2000. At the time, the band continued playing as if nothing had happened, even after Tarja left the stage along with the criminal and the security guards. There are videos of the episode here on RUclips. Later, after Tarja left, the band itself mentioned the event in its official biography. The way the band decided to fire Tarja and the facts of the past that were brought to public knowledge infuriated many fans. To get a sense of how big the fan base was in the past, look at the number of views of the first videos with Anette ("Bye, bye, beautiful" and "Amaranth"). These numbers are representative of the fan base situation at the end of Tarja's period and beginning of Anette. The first album with Anette was the band's first album ever released with RUclips ever running. We were all curious to know who the new singer was and what she sounded like. Unfortunately Anette didn't please a large part of the original fan base, which also contributed to the band losing more fans. Anette and Floor helped to attract a different audience and reconfigure the fan base. Some old fans have returned with the entry of Floor. She is nothing new to us. For example, I've known her since her first band, After Forever. Here are some sources:

Usually I tend to like the Floor versions a bit more (with some exceptions for both, Tarja and Anette), because with her voice or small changes they make live with her the songs have a bit more oomph. And I also tend to like Floor's operatic singing style a bit more since she rarely goes full on opera (but when she does 🤯), her voice almost always keeps a lighter tone. And I like that when I wanna listen to more than one or two songs, because the full on operatic tone starts to get a bit much for me (just personal taste; before Tarja and Nightwish I couldn't stand it at all). But for me this one is perfect as it is with Tarja and Marko (have to admit though that a Nightwish song in which Marko just sings one word usually makes it to my favorites immediately 😁).
And still..after hearing Floor with Henk (another version I love) all I wanted was hearing Floor and Marko sing this song together. As much as I love Tarja in this, Marko and Floor are just perfect together and I was (still am) so curious about how they would sound. And surprisingly I don't even think I would like it more, I just wanna hear it so bad because I think that would be perfect too. And it wouldn't hurt to have another awesome version of my first favorite Nightwish song.
Oh and for me there is a long list of "you have to listen to that". Trying to think of a short version. With Anette: Slow, Love, Slow (fits her voice perfectly and there is even a good live version on RUclips somewhere; sadly not many good live recordings with her on the platform), Rest Calm and Sahara (both studio) and of course Scaretale. There is a cool fan made video with live footage and scenes of the Imaginaerum movie. One of my all time favorities is Planet Hell, I almost don't care which female lead sings it, but I like the video with Anette because of how goofy the guys are in it. And pretty much the whole Human Nature album (favorites being Tribal and Endlessness). I really tried the "short" thing... failed..

Tarja was extremely ill the day of this performance. She couldn’t even speak that morning, and her doctor told her to cancel the show. Luckily, she didn’t, considering what happened afterwards. There are other versions on RUclips where she doesn’t get drowned out bc she wasn’t sick. Now, when Floor does it with Henk, the band will tone it down a bit. They’ve toned down all of the old Tarja songs. And, regarding TPATP, it’s a great song, but Toumas caused all of that drama himself. He was more concerned about ruining Tarja’s solo career, than being professional. A lot of the stuff in the open letter has been debunked. If you’re going to research and get into all of this drama, you should react to Ever Dream from End of an Era. It is rumored that Toumas wrote that song about Tarja. You can see him getting very emotional after Tarja sings the first chorus. There is so much history that the new fan base tries to erase. It’s extremely sad. Not a lot of NW fans watch reaction videos. The ones that do, are usually new fans that found them from either Beste Zangers, or a reaction video. They are a small minority of the fan base. They will have you thinking that NW is more popular than ever. They are not. Their popularity has dwindled quite a bit since the first Annette album. And, the majority of fans are not hardcore Floor fans. Most fans have been around since the beginning and listen to all three singers. The newer fans have pushed the old fans away from reaction videos. It’s gotten better, but they used to downvote all Tarja reaction videos, and if a reactor liked a Tarja version of a song, they would freak out in the comments. They have made many reactors quit reacting. Some have just apologized and stuck to only reacting to Floor. Most, are terrified to criticize her at all. But, these are the loud minority. They don’t represent the fan base as a whole.

Well said. And one needs to remember two other factors to be remembered: the development of the sound engineering and social media - e.g. RUclips was released only in 2005. In Tarja's era the music was not equally get-at-able as it is now.

I don't think Tuomas or the other band members involved in her departure are the real problem per se. It's people like you who, till this date, can't handle the drama and thus creating "unverifiable facts" and "rumors" that fit their narrative to make it more bearable for themselves and subsequently putting Tarja on an pedestal, forgetting she and her partner were part of the problem. They had their reasons to fire her, which all of us don't know about to its full extent. I wonder what will happen to you if you encounter major catastrophies in your own life. I don't like to see you crumble if that happens. All I would like to say to you and those others who suffer from the same delusions: "Grow up and move on". This behaviour is just dispicable.

We usually tolerate even quite vulgar behaviour if we have been in that circle long enough. When something changes in our life, we start to see things from a new perspective and move on. What comes to TH, I am not surprised that he reacted so strongly to the change. It was good for both parties to get out from a situation without other solution. - I am not sure whether those comments are showing the eagerness to reduce Tarja's input, or just because people are already expecting such a high quality performance from her that they sort of ignore it like "we knew she will be damn good so nothing new here".
