Didn't see the crash itself but did see the plane just before it crashed. My brother and I were on a bus between Coventry and Birmingham that morning. The weather had been pretty awful, damp and misty. We noticed a plane heading towards us really low near to what looked like a wood. I said, "what the f*^* is that plane doing; it's far too low to land at Birmingham" (we didn't know that Coventry Airport existed). Later that evening, when we got back to Birmingham from Stourbridge, the local papers were full of the crash and we realised we had seen the last few seconds of the flight.
Another one for "things and conversations that totally and absolutely happened"
That has to feel horrible knowing it was their last moments, hope you are at peace with these memories
Very sad. I’d be freaking out. Every time I can hear a plane, I feel it is too low. I used to have nightmares about one crashing into my home. I’m afraid to fly. My family loves flying. My son wanted to be a pilot (another nightmare of mine).
Something like that happened to me in November 2007. I was with friends on the coast near Melbourne when I saw a Cessna 337 flying past; an unusual design, which made it stick in my mind. The next day I heard that a Cessna 337 had gone missing, and three days later wreckage and bodies were discovered. Investigators attributed the crash to the pilot becoming disoriented in low cloud and crashing into the sea.
Based on the timeline in the final report, I was among the last to see that aircraft before it flew into the cloud.
Wow
"No one on board the aircraft survived."
Words I dread reading.
RIP, all lost souls.
The souls aren’t lost thank God, just the bodies

I can only imagine how wide-eyed and woken up the pilots got when they saw that tower suddenly appear in the fog, just to their left.
We underestimate the negative affects of inadequate rest and sleep - sadly, fatigue is invariably a killer in situations like this one. Great job TFC.
It’s a miracle no one on the ground was hurt, but still a shame those occupants of this flight lost their lives like this.
The irony is that the rules and updates only change when there's a catastrophic event like this.
@@Rainmanpdt49safety manuals are written in blood

Yeah they lost there life's because of negligence being up for so many hours instead of going somewhere and resting up.
I'm in the transportation industry we are so heavily regulated we can only drive 11 hours then you MUST take off 10 hours it should be the same thing for pilots .
So many mistakes, but the worst was the pilot’s failure to realize he was flying less than 86 feet above the ground when he was still over a mile from the runway threshold. Both pilots had altimeters but decided to ignore them. Crazy recklessness.
Fatigue played a major role, nobody chooses to die like that
Crazy tiredness would be more likely.
@@Blast6926 There are many airports where a tired pilot could get away with flying 80 feet above ground, while still a mile away from the runway. This wasn’t one of those.
Haven't flown since 1991. It's accounts like this one which have guaranteed I'll never board a plane again.
@@miketype1each That’s a shame. A 2022 Dept. of Transportation report says airlines are the safest way to travel by far. Trains are over three times more dangerous; buses are thirty times more dangerous; and cars are the deadliest form of transportation there is.
Moral of the story: If you are overworked, ask someone else to do it for you. It can safe lifes 🙏🏻
When I served in the USAF, we had a rule regarding 16 hours of work. We called it the "Sweet 16" rule. Once you had 16 hours on duty, you had to disarm, not allowed to operate machinery, and sent directly home. Later on in my Law Enforcement career, our state was hit with a blizzard and we couldn't leave the jail and oncoming relief Officers were unable to drive due to road conditions. We cleared out a small pod for personal use. I slept in a cell for 3 days, just like any other inmate. Once we hit 16 hours, we were sent to the pod for 8 hours of rest before being allowed to work again. I've heard this 16 hour rule exists because of an NTSB investigation into a train wreck where the conductor had been on shift over 16+ hours. This resulted in the new NTSB and OSHA regulations in the US.
Did any notice the horizontal situation indicator flip on landing
But where
You get a thumbs up simply for making me look up the meaning of "conurbation."
I don't know why anyone would risk flying a plane while severely fatigued. Same as truckers. But, companies put such pressure on them that they are forced. That's infuriating. Zero regard for lives.
I truly hope that laws have tightened up to protect people.
This plane crash was sad and could've been avoided if the pilots were well rested and alert, as they were on a tight schedule like most commercial airlines have their pilots flying back to back, and for these pilots who were bound to make a series of careless mistakes, and the outcome disastrous.
My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. ✝
Exactly what i was thinking. I worked night shift for 18 yrs, ,it is so hard to concentrate when your fatigued. May GOD rest their their souls.
I love TheFlightChannel! Their masterful use of CGI to recreate airline disasters is informative and often chilling and even though the simulation doesn't include the moment of impact I sometimes find myself closing my eyes as though I was in the cockpit. Good job TFC!

@@seltaeb9691 Perhaps appreciate?
This plane crashed metres from my brothers house. It crashed into willenhall woods. We drove straight there, thinking it hit my brothers house. Fire everywhere. Never seen anything like it.
There was a kids park and playing area metres away too, but the weather was awful so all the kids were indoors. They’d normally be playing outside and in the woods where the plane went down.
There are a lot many viewers here who may not fully understand how this could happen. The regulations are most often written in blood because of earlier air accidents. Restrictions on duty and flight times are for a reason. Fatigue is a real thing and I have been a victim of it, even when within the flight time duty limits. Throw in time pressures and the responsibility upon the captain, by his company to return the aircraft to base. Couple this with a dynamic machine whilst fatigued and operating during the body's natural sleep cycle. Now toss in tunnel vision and confirmation bias during deteriorating weather conditions whilst attempting a non-precision approach is asking for trouble. The events leading to this disaster are a classic tale of the proverbial accident chain.
To many mistakes
Ok, you can list a ton of reasons...but it doesn't change the fact, that not one aircraft accident, which was avoidable, should have had happenned. The regulations should not be written in blood. They are and this shows the deep corruption in these organisations, companies and regulatory agencies. Just tragic and inexcusable. I don't care of the status quo. It should not work like this, should never had worked like this.
@Adam Bazso I can, in fact, name accidents which were unavoidable, meaning the crew were doomed regardless. Written in blood is not unique to the aviation industry, and simply means changing policies to reduce the risk to an acceptable level. This is because accidents can never be eliminated. Yes, there are recorded accidents which were a direct result of cost-cutting shortcuts taken by companies. However, to insinuate all accidents are a result of corruption tells me you are mistaken and ill-informed.
Yeah but that doesn’t exclude the other degradation so?
spiderman home< nice to see Mclaren back! weird they continue?.
A very DISTURBING crash 💀😱😭
PS: why no TERRAIN and PULL UP alarms??
Disabled during landing, which, by definition, involves getting close to the ground.
When the plane is put into landing configuration the GPWS disables itself, so they don't get false alarms when on final approach.
The shaky camera angle at the end brings a more immersive view of the incident. Please make sure to include it in your future videos. A static view does not depict the panic that a pilot is goimg through
Another great video. Got to give a lot credit for explaining procedures to people who may not be familiar with aviation. Always enjoy your videos and may those that perished RIP.
I have a suggestion:
Can you put the flight number in the description of every video (in this video is Air Algerie flight 702P) in case we need to find out more about the accident, we can look it up on the Internet to get more information about it.
My father the flight instructor used to say many times, "The most important decision any pilot makes is whether to take off or stay on the ground. It is always a life-or-death decision, and some days, the only safe decision is to keep yourself and your aircraft firmly on terra firma." A LOT of these crashes are either because the pilots (like these two) made the wrong decision about that, or because their companies forced them to.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
S0 sad
Lol. It's not a "life and death" decision take takeoff or stay on ground, unless you're taking off in IMC without a plan or rating or in extreme conditions that pose an obvious threat.
@@jasonMB999 It *always* is. It's not just weather at your FBO. If your preflight check reveals a problem - is it serious enough to stay on the ground, or do you complete your trip and fix it on the other end? What about conditions at the destination? Are they as nice as your takeoff point, or is their weather deteriorating? What about your own skills and abilities? Does your flight plan stretch them or match up with them? What about cargo and passengers? Is your weight and balance within limits?
A smart pilot will make the right decisions. Because all it takes is guessing wrong once, especially in a small plane. Look up the NTSB statistics some time.
@@ArchTeryx00 lol, my dude, it's not that tight and serious. Everything you mentioned are all the basics. It's not hard to decide not to fly somewhere when the weather is bad, or if something is unusual during preflight. Mass and balance is the most basic thing, planes don't takeoff without mass and balance... So, again, it's not a life and death thing, that's what a pilot might tell you to make himself look more important. Just chill bro 😂

Spolier alert: the plane doesn't crash into houses, as the title says, but "...close to the edge of the housing conurbation" (video transcript).
Nice video, despite another misleading title.
Not misleading, based on the Wikipedia page about the crash: “The aircraft was overturned and damaged several houses before crashing inverted into a wooded area beyond.”
Get There-itis strikes again. Having survived being in over my head one time I never let getting there trump my decisions again. Better to disappoint some people than end up dead.
I personally believe the crew was blameless. The company had them working well past their maximum hours for an overnight flight. The companies in charge are wholly to blame.
RVR = Runway Visual Range. Its worth noting, a radar approach is not a precision approach, since only lateral guidance is given. There is not height information. Besides the missed MDA, the tower they hit would be on the approach plate, so this really comes down to inadequate pilot preparation.

This was referred to as the "Up Side Down Crash" or sometimes "Down Side Up Crash" because of the unusual nature of this Aircraft crash tragedy having a plane turnover in such s manner before the fatal impact.
Height, or HAGL and AGL, are different concepts than elevation and altitude. Using “height” of the airplane in reference to elevation as shown by the altimeter, is confusing. I have a ‘height’ of 6 feet when I get out of bed in the morning. But my ‘elevation’ or ‘altitude’ is well over 7,000 feet.

@@trevorregay9283did you watch the same video as us? The fatigue messed up their minds
Great video. Thee are a number of lessons here. First, the airline's use of an airliner not properly equipped to perform an ILS approach, especially in bad weather or at night, was unacceptable, especially since this aircraft used Coventry as a base. The pilots should have known that, under conditions of fatigue, it was doubly important to go through the checklist in detail. Taking shortcuts in this kind of weather is tantamount to suicide. I would have faulted ATC too - not just Coventry, but other ATC Centers. If they had added a height-finding radar the controllers could have warned the crew that the airplane was well below glidepath. A 3D radar (like the US Navy's SPS-48) covers position, direction and altitude. Yet another option was to tell the airline operations base that they were too tired to fly. Getting fired is better than dying.

I don't understand why an electrical tower was built just in front of an airport runway.
This is odd. One day a friend and I out driving around, we both seen with our own eyes, a huge in size BOEING, to low altitude. We thought it was going to land/ crash doen on houses, near downtown. Minnesota ave, / 6th street.
We drove down the street to watch the BOEING slowly drop out of the sky, We heard no engine noise. We turn the corner keep the BOEING in our sights, once we past, 4 houses, we no longer saw the BOEING dropping out of the sky.
??
They must have been very fatigued to just forget all their training like that!! The report is they were two hours past, but these are some incredible mental errors. And it is a small miracle they didn't land in that neighborhood and no one on the ground also died. RIP 5 souls. Thank you for a great presentation.
I suspect it was a combination of fatigue and needing to get the job done, leading to them becoming fixated on landing. They rightly abandoned their first attempt to get into Coventry, but the frustration must have built as they got further and further behind schedule. It's a shame the load couldn't have been transported by road from East Midlands to Coventry, it's less than an hour's drive.
Sleep sleep.

They did not consider the altitude and probably because they were overworked and tired. They should have waited before taking off from the other airport. Rest in peace.
I almost cannot feel pity for the crew some astronomically suicidal decisions that they made. FLYING WHEN THERE IS VERY POOR VISIBILITY! What an avoidable tragedy. If the company had sent the new flight crew to Coventry to pick up the plane this wouldn’t have happened. A tired and cranky crew past their hours and just wanting to get this plane back to base and go home to bed is what caused this accident.
So close, yet so far
Almost home, end of the shift- get-there-itis.
Sad thing is that it's only about 40 miles from East Midlands Airport to Coventry Airport. Wonder if the cargo could have been taken off their hands at EMA for transport by road whether things would have been different?
I wondered that myself considering it was livestock.
One reason why the cargo perhaps wasn't taken by road to EMA was that at the time there were protests being held at Coventry to try and stop the export of Veal calves to Europe. These protests resulted in the death of one protester who was run over by a truck either trying to enter or leave the airport. The company involved in the movement of the livestock was to say the least dubious.
