Thank you! I do catch my hand, knuckles, and fingers sometimes. Not if I’m being careful but sometimes I just get careless. Trying to maximize the amount of penguins I could get out of this wood made it close quarters! Thanks for watching and the comment :)
Neve seen these before. Nice job and something I can try easily. I don't have a favorite, but what I really like is the contrast in body size, shape and wood grains/inclusions between them all.
Thank you! I have two playlists on here to help new wood turners. One is on wood turning fundamentals. The other is on sharpening lathe tools. You might find those helpful to you. Let me know if you ever need a video on a specific topic.
These are great a really lovely idea that can be extended into other things. I was a bit worried for you with how close your sleeve is to that spinning chuck - take care brother.
It’s a fun hobby. I have wood turning fundamental play list to help beginners. If you haven’t seen those, then give them a watch. I’m always here to help if I can. Happy turning!
Thank you. The dark wood is like 1.5-2 inches and the light wood is about half an inch. You just need to pay attention on how you mount it on the lathe between centers. You want to offset the center toward the light wood so that the light wood is just beyond the neck diameter. Hope that makes sense.
You are welcome. Thank you so much for the comment and for subscribing! Hopefully you will find my channel a help as you start the turning journey. A lot of my content is targeted to helping new wood turners. 1,000! Yay
I’ve answered that question several times in the comments but I plan to do a follow up video trying to answer and explain the ratio and how to mount on the lathe. Short answer is the ratio can vary based on how far the light wood is from the lathe centers. This question has been asked enough that I do feel another video is warranted. Thanks for the question!
I used about 2 inch walnut and half inch maple. You just need to think about where the center of the blank should be after rounded. You don’t want the maple too close to the center because then your penguin head will be too skinny to get rid of the maple. Too far away from the center and your light wood will not approach the neck properly. So just try to visualize that when you mount between centers. I offset toward the maple by about half an inch. Hope that all makes sense. If not I can attempt a better answer.
What are the proportions of light and dark wood? it looks like about 75% - 25% I am going to try this, but wanted to make sure there was enough thickness of light wood for the belly but, without having to make the neck and head too narrow.
I just measured a the blank I have glued up is 2 inches of walnut and 3/8 inches of maple. But I would mount it off center so that I’m really not removing any maple or not much at all. If you want the maple to extend up the neck farther then you would want the maple closer to the center just a bit. Really just try to visualize where the maple will be if you have an half inch head or a 1 inch head and make your best judgment call. I wouldn’t stress over it too much. Give one a shot and adjust if you want it slightly different. Hope that helps! Thanks for the question.
Many thanks, I will centre the block making sure the diameter of the neck/head remains just within the dark wood, I can always reduce the overall size if the light wood goes too far up the neck. @@woodworkingmcdanielstyle
Thank you! You want the light wood to be off centered by half the thickness you want the penguin head to be. So if you want the head to be 1 inch, you need to have the light wood half an inch from where you mount the drive spur. I think most of my penguins I used 2 inch walnut and a half inch or so maple. The larger ones were maybe 1 inch maple. This is a frequent question so I might follow up with a short video explaining just that part. Thanks again for watching :)
I don’t know yet. I made my first one about a year ago. They will probably sell all year around in the right market. In my market, December brings the best opportunity for smaller $10-30 items.
It’s kind of cheating to not show us the little flat penguin until after you ask us to choose. These are awesome. I made a bunch of snowmen and snowman head bottle stoppers this year but I’ll definitely be adding some penguins for Xmas 2024.
I really just winged it and they turned out ok. On the small ones the walnut was about 2 inches and the maple was about a half inch. You do need to take time when you mount the glued up blank on the lathe. You want to make sure you think about what will be left of the light wood when it is round. I pretty much measured the center of the walnut and then mounted the drive spur about half an inch toward the light wood from the center. This made sure I had about a half inch thickness of maple left when the blank was rounded. Hope that makes sense and helps. Thanks for the question.
I answered in some other comments in this thread. Really it’s up to you but you want to mount it on the lathe so that the size of the neck you want will remove almost all the light wood. If you want the neck to go up farther then probably use slightly thicker light wood or mount the white wood closer to the center. Hope that makes sense.
My wife and I like the chubby one but I couldn’t get the shape right how did you do it please? I’ve made several penguins but I’ve forgot what size wood to get the body and chest right could you give me th sizes of th wood please to use?😢
My dark wood was like 1.5-2 inches and the light wood was like 0.5 inches. You can use a different ratio but when you mount it between centers you want to make sure the light wood will disappear at your desired neck thickness. So if you are getting too much light wood simply move the centers further from the light wood and if you need more light wood move the centers closer to the light wood. It’s not an exact science but I would spend time when mounting between centers to visualize the neck diameter you want and where the light wood will be if it’s turned to that size. Hope that helps.
@Bretonlad yes I’ll add that to my to do list. The penguin on the far left that has a pointy belly had the light wood mounted closer to the center or the light wood and dark wood meeting point was right at the neck thickness. The chubby penguin had the light wood much further from the center point and the light wood/dark wood meeting point was further out than the neck thickness. But when I make some new ones I will try to make some variations and explain it in detail. Thanks for the suggestion
Detailed, clear audio, enjoyed it.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and the feedback.
I have now made a few..so popular with everyone.. my Troop is growing.
Your the best one I watched..
Yes they are so popular. Thanks again for the support!
The chubby one is my favorite!!! ❤
Like the penguins, loved the editing and voice over. Subscribed within 30 seconds.
Thank you so much!
Cool project, thanks for sharing. Full view and Like 👍
You are welcome. Thank you for the support!
Great work! Amazed that you don't catch your fingers on the chuck while you sand, you are so close to it around 3:37.

I always cut extra long blanks to keep my knuckles out of the huge spinning chunks of steel that hate me.
@@peteg4526 definitely a good habit!
Brilliant. Definitely love the small plump one!
He was a happy accident. Glad I decided to try the short one out. Thank you for watching and the comment!
Love your turning my favourite is the little fellow & second on the left

Merry Christmas to you & your family
Thank you Steve. I really appreciate the support and comment. I wish the best for you and your family as well!

I’m always looking for something new to make so I’m glad these gave you a new idea. Thanks for watching and the comment. Happy turning!
Thanks for posting
You are welcome! Glad you enjoyed
A really charming project. Nice one!
Thank you so much!
Great work !! I'm going to give them a try (new to turning ) Thank You.

Checking out all videos , following
I appreciate your watching. I have a new bird design coming soon that I think you will like
These are great a really lovely idea that can be extended into other things. I was a bit worried for you with how close your sleeve is to that spinning chuck - take care brother.
I agree! When I was editing the video I noticed how close my sleeve was. I’ll have to be more careful watching that. Thanks for the comment.
Love the little penguin at end , only started wood turning will make in new year great job
It’s a fun hobby. I have wood turning fundamental play list to help beginners. If you haven’t seen those, then give them a watch. I’m always here to help if I can. Happy turning!
Great project! Do you use equal sizes of the wood you glue together or the lighter piece thinner than the other?
Thank you for sharing!

Great little tutorial, thank you! I’m about to get my first lathe and your subs were at 999 so I subbed! I think I’m your #1,000!

Wery intresting video.Iiked the one to the left, longneckpinguin. Maybe ill try to copy these😉
Thank you! Copy away and have fun
Great work
Thank you! And thanks for watching
Could you please tell me the dimensions of the wood, specifically the ratio of dark to light wood? Thanks
I’ve answered that question several times in the comments but I plan to do a follow up video trying to answer and explain the ratio and how to mount on the lathe. Short round is my favorite with long head shorty coming in second. Whats your rough ratio of light to dark wood?

You are very welcome. The way you worded it makes it more clear. Hope they are a fun project for you
These come out really good. What size is the wood once it has been glued? Also, what sizes are the two different pieces of wood?
Thank you! You want the light wood to be off centered by half the thickness you want the penguin head to be. Love these animals.
Are these for Christmas or are they selling year round?

Wonder the thicknesses of your light and dark wood

Still cannot see how you got both vertical and horizontal shape of the last and chubby penguin! Could you please do a video or give instructions?
