I know this is an older vid but I think your sheer load test may have a flaw. Ive noticed that as it pulls the test peice pulls away at the bottom more like a peel than show the sheer strength of the adhesive/fastener. I think if you supported on both sides of the test peice like your tensile strength test in this vid it may give more accurate results. Thanks for giving genuine unbiased reviews and tests!

I have to second this observation. I've seen fully cured VHB take the wood\plating\paint with it during destructive testing. It really almost approaches epoxy, within its limited effective temperature range. I'd be interested to see the behavior of the other brands after a longer curing period.

Here’s a very important variable you left out…. heat. I used the 30lb Gorilla Glue on an LED light strip in my garage (under a cabinet). The tape ran the entire 6 foot length of light strip. The light strip maybe weighed 5lbs total and was only an inch wide. It held great over the winter but in the summer when the garage reached a temperature of about 25 degrees celsius to 30 degrees celsius the tape let go. Pretty important factor given my application was well within the expected uses of this product.

It's hard to come by, but I found that Scotch outdoor permanent tape 5-15 lbs to be the best for most applications, including applications where it gets hot. I believe the logo has a picture of a hanging circular star looking thing. I've tried them all, and I use a lot of this tape, and the Scotch seems to be the most permanent. If you use it indoors like to hang a picture, it will tear off the drywall if you're not careful.

Not worth the video. Any filter only system will leave behind particles in the water (good minerals or bad chemicals). The only two proven consumer ways to get a ppm of 0, is reverse osmosis and distillation, both waste water and in the case of distillation requires energy. A typical Brita filter or similar is only for taste, it really doesnt filter any nasty stuff like lead.

I use starting fluid followed by alcohol, followed by window cleaner. It works best except for one *exception. Starting fluid disolves everything from cigarette tar to 5th wheel grease. I actually have used starting fluid expediently dry clean my uniform at work one time. I use the alcohol to remove traces left after evaporation and to remove the traces of upper cylinder lubricant. The window cleaner removes any streaks (probably trace amounts of lubricant) left behind from the alcohol.
*ONE EXCEPTION: I live in between 2 coke (pyrolyzed coal) plants and beside a steel mill (AK Steel). We have "hard humidity" here. It's basically hard water vapor suspended in the air. Over time it leaves a film on EVERYTHING including glass. Starting fluid WILL NOT put a dent on this film! You might as well be using plain water. No, what you need to remove a film caused by hard humidity is pure white vinegar. Heinz or Great Value, it doesn't matter, just buy it by the gallon to save money. Then hit it with the Triple Threat cleaning method I mentioned above.

Great review overall. The information is good for my purposes. I have a small issue with the testing or maybe it's just another test category to consider because it all depends on how you are going to use the product. I noticed on the vertical pull tests, especially on the metal, that the two pieces always separated away from the bottom. With that in mind, "how does it apply to reality?" ... I say to myself. An object stuck to a wall will most always separate from the top first because of gravity pulling down, and you would need to rely on the tape to support both the total weight of the object as it pulls outward but that will be greatly diminished by how much surface area of tape it needs to slide downwards on. This brings me to the important test, that is related and I would have wanted to see ... The test where the two surfaces slide apart parallel from each other, rather than tear away from each other. Using your metal vertical pull test as sn example, I would like to see a perfect pull vertically without separation first from the bottom. This means that the cable needs to be perfectly centered and perhaps add a slightly loose wedge both sides (like a track) to keep the pieces in parallel to the track. My prediction would be that the tapes strength will be very much higher for all across the board. Thanks again. Geat review.

I've just re-watched this and I have some observations and a request:
    1. The VHB tape was very consistent across the tests. On the metal tests, it failed in the way that it should according to my knowledge of the VHB technology.
    2. The wood test failures were largely the fact that the adhesives had not bonded to the wood - they failed mostly from surface contact.
The wood at the lumber yards is handled after being machined and the surfaces are not ideal for bonding. They often have traces of oils and other materials. Likewise, the end cuts from the circular saw have strands of fibers at various lengths that are not good for bonding. The Chinesium tape appears to have done better in this test largely because I believe it has more solvent than the other tapes based on appearance.
I would suggest sanding the bonding areas with 120 grit sandpaper to clean and smooth them. After sanding, wipe with acetone or denatured alcohol to remove the sanding fines and allow to dry. Then bond and apply a 10lb/5kg weight or other clamping force and then test. If my assumptions are correct, doing this with the VHB tape will produce a much better result that can be indicative without rerunning the entire testing batch.
VHB is used to bond the glass window assemblies' aluminum frames to the steel structure where it handles the thermal expansion differences between the two. Amazing stuff. I use it on many things - just not wood.

I know this comment is a little over a year old but I'm looking to install some ABS plastic louvers on my Dodge Challenger. Do you think the 3M Scotch 5952 VHB used with some adhesive promoter will give me a good bond on my back window? I just don't want the louvers flying off the window when I'm doing 65 plus MPH down the road. Thanks.

Bought the LLPT tape after watching this test. Great adhesion at first but the stickiness completely died within two weeks. I used the tape to adhere a flat wooden plaque to a flat wooden desk. In two weeks the plaque just fell off and the residual tape film had no stickiness to it at all. It was as if the glue in the film was absorbed into the wood. Failed miserably. Amazon refunded without question.

I WAS going to buy this, but not now. I didn't think about the time factor. Thanks for the heads-up.

How these tapes hold up to time, temperature cycles, etc. is what I was curious about also. Some double sided tapes are designed to adhere body panels for years through temperature and weather. Having half the initial bond strength but that strength remaining consistent for years makes it much more useful for sure.

I am not going to lie. Your channel may be one of the most useful channels I check out.
There are more interesting topics, but your array of comparisons is a helpful thing to almost any human that wants to do the job right, the first time.

I'd love to see a revisit to this, taking higher heat into account, such as a car interior. Looking for some replacement tape for my quad lock wireless charging mount after the included tape (I thought it was supposed to be 3M VHB) gave loose after just a few months, as soon as the heat started picking up.

I think some of the tensile strength tests were affected by the blocks tilting as they were pulled apart. Because each block only had a single pin, they could swivel a bit, turning some of the tensile force into shearing. Maybe using two pins per block would keep the tape line more level for future tensile tests.
Anyway, this is a great video as always! Your videos have informed a number of my recent purchasing decisions. Since discovering your channel, I always check if you've tested whatever I'm looking to buy.
One thing I'd love to see you test or review would be torque wrenches! I have one that is rated from 20-100 ft.-lbs, but I need one that can do 10-15 ft.-lbs for car repair stuff. I hear horror stories about torque wrenches being wildly out of calibration leading to snapped bolts and damaged engine blocks.

Good test. I’m applying moulding to cabinet doors and drawers to change from flat faced to Shaker style. I didn’t want to fill nail holes.

You didn't test "load over time" which is the most important for fixing stuff to a wall with tape.
In my experience it is just a matter of time and stuff falls down...

How would you suggest that he sets-up such a test. What would be the parameters? TIA

@@5jjt Stick a piece of wood, plastic and/or metal to a wall for the recommended adhesion time, then put various weights on them and see how long it takes for them to fall. or you could do it by hanging weight from them as well.

LLPT! Probably the stuff that's used on those made in China auto emblems (with doublestick tape). I'm going to buy a roll of LLPT - price is just too good to pass up.
    Thanks for another great video.
