- (31 May 1990) Soviet Union leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev waded into a rush-hour crowd on a downtown Washington sidewalk and shook hands with pedestrians. The bystanders cheered and applauded, a few in the crowd waved small American flags.
Gorbachev had just concluded his second round of talks with President George H.W. Bush when he stopped his motorcade en route from the White House to the Soviet Embassy. He walked calmly up to the crowd of 500 or more people who had been waiting in hopes of catching a glimpse of him. After a few seconds on the sidewalk, he walked the street, trailed by a phalanx of security officials.

I managed a store not far from where this happened. I was waiting to cross the street when his car stopped right in front of me, and he got out. He looked right at me gave me a smile and a nod then I got swallowed up in the mob. You could tell he enjoyed the response he was getting from the Americans. I think he was a good man. Working in DC you're used to motorcades and dignitaries, but this was definitely the most memorable for me. RIP Mr. Gorbachev it was nice to meet you.
Shook the world. I was on the other side of the street with, I think Duke Zieberts to My right. We got up on the roofs of Our cars to see. The Secret service was flipping out. Yelling at Us to get down. They told Us to keep Our hands out of Our pockets. We just felt something was sweeping over the world at that moment.
My favorite part is when he jumped out of the limo and screamed “it’s Gorbin’ time!”. Truly a man of our times.
That was a good day a great man and the way he came out of his car and shook hands with America you would have thought he was a rockstar God bless you
Slice Man people forget that at the time it was Gorbymania. This is how we beat our enemy. We make them our friends !!! Gorbachev is wondering , “WOW these Americans just beat us and they love me?”
but not a good one for them security people. Juts one jack hole w/ a gun ruins it.
It’s ultimate bragging rights, people can say “sure I met the US President once in DC” but it’s entirely different when they say “yeah I met Soviet leader Gorbachev in DC on the street once”
Better than what they have now.
Rest in Peace, I wish we had more politicians like him today.
1931-2022. In 1990 it was Gorbymania when he came to America. The chant was Gorby Gorby.
RIP President Gorbachev. You will be remembered as one of the greatest men in history.
I remember when this happened Iwas 13 and the news was all about him interviewing people and one woman saying “the man is a PR genius!”
Seriously though, imagine the stress on the security and everyone else involved. Something bad happens to gorba, everything could quickly turn around
the secret service guys are nervous .
Can you blame them,?
@@alonenjersey nope....
@@northlander4370 These days they'd be VERY nervous.
Aardige man geweest, een voorbeeld voor de huidige politici.
God bless Gorby
Gorbachev was such a contrast with all of the stodgy old men who preceeded him as president of the USSR.
The US and the EU should have helped the Soviet Union instead of China.
Sleeping prophecy by Napoleon about China is so true, I agree with you if the west helped USSR instead of China
They should’ve helped none of them
He asked for help not
long before the coup if I recall
Strong move
I remember the crowds chanting and yelling "Gorbi!"
I saw that The Man was moved.
Could you imagine if Gorbachev had an assassination attempt instead of Reagan that could’ve been world ending no wonder all the suits looks extremely nervous also could you imagine the staff of the hospital “yeah we have the Soviet premier coming in he’s got a gsw”
There were actually two assassination attempts against him, both in the Soviet Union. One of them happened at the Revolution Day parade in Moscow on November 7, 1990.
I can only see lots of worried secret service men who look like Ron Burgundy
