I can relate to what you're saying regarding the only thing missing being your parents. I've tried to relive many old computer experiences from my younger days, and while it's still fun to play around with the hardware, the experience you remember was in part influenced by your mindset at the time, the environment in which you were playing, and the people around you. I used to play many two player games with my brother, and used to enjoy showing programs I'd written to my parents - so yeah... there's that aspect missing nowadays.
This is so accurate. Also, the one thing that can't be recreated is the newness, the adventure and exciting mystery of the games and hardware (and this is really one of the biggest things missing. That's what it was all about) My C64, Atari 400 mini and The Spectrum all sit alongside a PS2, PS3, PS4...we have come so far in technology and become so used to incredible games and graphics. The mystery and technical marvel of it all has long been surpassed.
I preordered mine on Amazon UK in November and got it on December the 23rd. I live in the USA and was intrigued with The Spectrum especially with a working keyboard! I have only tried The Hobbit so far and that was on Christmas day. I had to try The Hobbit out first because i loved Zork and Text adventures! Our cat Frisky was sick and i took her to the vet on Christmas eve and i was there for 5 hours. She has heart disease and has stopped eating now. I wanted to play some Spectrum later this week but I am too worried about her at the moment.
I recall opening my ZX81 and i recall opening my Spectrum to realiswe that the cassette recorder was not compatible for some odd reason. Took me ages to figure that out.
Me playing Sir Fred on Speccy "Look at the graphics!! 😳" Me 2024. Just completed Horizon: Forbidden West - Burning Shores. 😢Blown away. We're a truly a blessed and privileged generation to witness how far gaming has come in 40 years.
A few years late and I was fortunate enough to get an Atari 800 along with my friends. I loved that computer, but damn if it wasn't really slow, parky and error prone reading from tape!
The CIRCLE routine seems to be about 8X as fast as the routine on the original 16/48K BASIC ROM. Perhaps that ROM is using an algorithm more like the one in Beta BASIC.
