I worked with exotics for over 10 years. Contrary to popular belief, porcupines cannot "shoot" their quils. When they feel threatened, by a fox, dog, bear, etc, they puff up to look bigger and then turn their back to the preditor...when they then try to bite, they get a mouth, face, and paws full of quils! If the quils are not removed, they get deeper and can migrate through the entire body, often killing the preditor! They, otherwise are very docile and calm. They are also very smart! And as one commenter said below, they are like a giant happy hamster!!! I love porcupines!!! They are very cute, and sweet!

We had these buggers under the house and in the woods behind the house when we lived in Alaska. The ones under sounded like they were eating the freaking floor away. Had no idea what they were til I caught one on camera coming out from underneath early in the morning. I also heard these weird high pitch giggle noises in the woods at night before I realized it was them. I could see how back in the day the natives might have mistaken them for something more like an impish 'being' so to speak. They really do sound weird at night in the dark. Creepy even. D:

Between 1:35 to 1:55 he kept trying to say good pumpkin. This is so cool, like the talking birds. I didnt know they could repeat words, i think he gets taught as long as she keeps repeating certain words like good, mine, pumpkin and the other video of his corn! So cute love it!!!

She has s great commentators voice. The contrast between her very calm sure voice and little high pitched teddy the porcupine voice makes these videos awesome.

Such an interesting video on your wonderful Porcupine friend. I have never heard a critter so happy and vocal. It really sounds like he is talking to you. I don't know if this is normal behavior but, Teddy Bear is a real cute character. What a wonderful unusual critter. I really have never heard that much about Porcupines but, now thanks to this video I know I like them. Thank you for posting this great video.
