Loved playing this game in early access but I just lost that love when it released. Lack of unique ships and ship diversity was one of those reasons. Does it still just have around 7 or 8 ship types?

No, its a mess. The DLC is very disappointing and buggy as hell. You get what, 2 encounters? And good luck doing some of them using some of the larger ships.

Without this DLC, it has 9 ship classes equally divided into 3 categories: light, medium and heavy.
I don't know if the DLC added more classes.
