  • Amateurs players don't know how to make a short serve with many spins. Chinese coach asked the players to make a spinny serve first and then shorten the serve later. I will explain to you two types of sidespin in table tennis, and which type of short serve suits better to your playing style.
    Special thanks to Jochen for the German translation.

    I have been struggling with attacking my 3rd balls when using the pendulum serve because it always goes to an award spot on my backhand corner. Maybe now I should be working on my step around footwork to take advantage of this placement. Thanks coach. :)

    I like this on so many levels! You say "in China, the approach is a little different.. " while what I would have said at that point "We do this very differently..." . Of course, nothing wrong with being subtle. It reminds me to take your other subtle comments much more seriously than I would if they were said in Western style.

    Excellent advice! Put the energy on the side spin (not underpin, to minimize ball rising) to keep serves short!

    Can you make a video about how to get more quality on a push ball? -> deeper on the table, more spin and good control. Most videos only cover the basics as far as pushing goes but I think that's very important

    Great video, it explains the core concept really well. However, Elijah Ng is right about pros (indeed good state level players will be already able to control spin most of the time). I think it comes down to observing your opponent and serving P or RP depending upon whether they return to your strength (be it FH or BH).

      yes, it related more to the tactics and playing style. I will cover it in the next videos about the observing and the statistics in your serve.

    The sidespin selection makes sense if you look at the evidence, but not from a theoretical or amateur standpoint. Logically:
    a) if I'm forehand oriented, then I want the ball to land to my right side, so that I can play the forehand without having to move, so I will play a serve with counterclockwise sidespin
    b) if I'm backhand oriented, then I want the ball to land to my left side, so that I can play the bakchand without having to move, so I will play a serve with clockwise sidespin
    In your explanation, it is precisely the other way round. I guess this is because:
    - professional players move well
    - and professional players don't merely think of the 3rd ball attack, but about dominating the rally after the 3rd ball.
    Can you clarify?

    • @elijahng5673
      @elijahng5673 7 лет назад +2

      Dieter Verhofstadt Professional players will almost always counter the spin of the serve which means
      A) if your forehand dominant, you serve pendulum, the ball should come back to your backhand. However professional players willl counter the spin by hitting it towards your forehand. Thus the ball will usually come back towards your forehand or to the middle depending on how hard the spin has been countered.
      B) vice-versa for backhand orientated players :)

    • @knotwilg3596
      @knotwilg3596 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the answer. Still that sounds strangely self fulfilling, almost tautologic. If the purpose of the pendulum sidespin is to make the ball come to the backhand, and returner will counter this to make it go to the forehand, and this is precisely the purpose, then why not simply give in to the spin.
      I think it's really about the position in the ensuing rally:
      1) pendulum orients to backhand, player pivots and tries to dominate with forehand from the backhand side, towards backhand
      2) reverse pendulum orients to forehand, player takes up central position and tries to dominate backhand to backhand rally, covering more space with his backhand.
      But I'm not sure ... Coach?

    Hi EmRatTinch and all here. I learn a lot with your videos. I use to do sidespin reverse pendulum serves all the time, sometimes long, sometimes short... the short ones are more difficult to me, but the opponent use to reply with a long and high ball, so I almost smash the ball in the 3er ball atack. Very good advices. But I really DONT know how to serve using pendulum. I am forehand dominant but my serve is reverse pendulum, so the opponent ball goes allways to my right...

    • @pingsunday
      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +1

      to keep it short, you should accelerate at the moment of contact, use more of the body to serve.

    I'm not sure if your reasoning about why forehand players prefer pendulum, backhand prefer reverse pendulum is correct. The way I understand it is
    A forehand player (Ma Long) will serve pendulum because he wants it going to his forehand(right side). The logic is that if the opponent blocks and let's the ball go with its natural spin it will be a weak shot to his left which he can attack because it is weak like in the clips. However, if a player counters his spin as they should it will almost always end up on his right side where he is more comfortable to play the point. It isn't safe for a player to try and return to his left because the angle of the spin means any error will see the ball off the table. The safest play for the return is counter spin to Ma Longs strong side

    Hi there,
    I am learning TT in Vietnam with a VN teacher (I don't speak Vietnamese, so it's a bit slow). You are right, the first thing I learnt was spin. Spin for serves and spin for shots. What I am struggling with is how to do a short side spin serve. I always put too much power on my serves. Is it just a question of power or am I missing something?

    • @pingsunday
      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +1

      Chris Chat its the problem of practice and acceleration. The more you accelerate in a short amount of time the shorter and spinnier the ball

      madan kumar Hi mate, I think the coach has given a hint - first learn how to do a really spinny serve, and then try doing it short. I have played with some players ranked at national level and the amount of spin they have in their serves is just mind boggling! I am also trying to learn since a long time how to put that much spin in my serves.

    • @pingsunday
      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +23

      keep it short is easy.
      Make your serve with lot of spins first, and then control it later. Spin comes from the wrist and body. Long or short comes from the forearm.

    • @TheChrisinger
      @TheChrisinger 7 лет назад +7

      A very important thing you have to keep in mind is to contact the ball as low as you can. This will make it easier to control the length of the ball. It will also prevent the ball from jumping up too high. You should actually have a low contact point all the time, also when serving long, as you can also add more speed to the ball.
      TL;DR always contact the ball low ;)

    im fh dominant player and i prefer reverse pdneulum because most of the time oppoenet recived to my middle and i dont need to step around to do pivot... i have ball in midlle so i can easy do fh without pivot (stepping around)

    • @greenLinkLP
      @greenLinkLP 7 лет назад +10

      Dawid Garboliński because the forehand from the backhand side is stronger. You can step deeper into the table and have a better angle. Also if the opponent returns the ball you can easily follow up with a forehand, which you wouldn't be able to do if you attacked the first topspin from the forehand and the opponent blocked the ball into your backhand.

    • @elijahng5673
      @elijahng5673 7 лет назад +4

      Dawid Garboliński actually there is another reason. In the professional level, the players know that a pendulum serve will be returned back to the server's starting location. Therefore, they will angle their shot to be down the line( away from the server) to counter the spin. Thus if the receiver does this it will actually go to your forehand side. However for you, when you get into a match with a opponent you need to see if the opponent actively controls ur serve and counters the spin or he is passive. That will determine whether or not you should serve pendulum or reverse pendulum.

    I ussually serve with pendulum sidespin, because I cannot pendulum serve with backspin. But when I play with attacking minded player, he will return my serve with flick easily because no backspin on the ball. My friend told me to put the ball to his forehand down the line, because forehand flick is harder than backhand flick. I want to ask your opinion about it. How should I serve?

    • @pingsunday
      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +2

      your friend is totally right. It seems that your pendulum sidespin is not short enough, or you serve always at the same position, so the opponent can flick it easily. So serve pendulum more to the middle of the table or at the right side, so they can't BH flick it. And If he tried to move to the middle to flick it, you can use a fast serve to his wide BH to win the point :) bests.

    Many of Zheng Jeke's serve are short with side top,
    for armature players wouldn't the normal pendulum serve be better for a back hand player as the ball is returned to the backhand because of spin and the reverse pendulum be netter for forehand players as the spin sends the ball to the servers forehand

    so I can do a pretty spinny serve.. and I can also do a very short serve.. But how exactly to do it both short and spinny at the same time? :s

      ALandarion
      1. Assuming you are a shakehander, when you are serving pendulum, change your grip. Your middle, ring and pinky should be curled at the backhand side of your bat. This allows your wrist to move more freely to produce more spin
      2. When you are serving, use less of your arm's forward momentum but more of your wrist. :)

    • @pingsunday
      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +2

      You can add a lot of spins and keep the ball short.
      Spin comes from the acceleration of the wrist and your body. Short or long, is just the way you let the ball goes (the motion of the forearm). I will make another video for that. The best way to generate spin, not from the forearm, don't use the forearm in your service.

    i always thought reverse was for forehand dominant, while regular pendulum was for backhand dominant. my playing area is quite small so i do it like that so i dont have to step around table. lol

    Hello EmRatThich,
    I really like your channel and your videos a lot, because they are very helpful. But I have a problem:
    I just turned 18 and i got myself a new racket ( BH: Butterfly Feint AG 1.3mm / FH: Donic Acuda S1 Turbo 2.0mm / Wood: Donic Epox Powerallroung ). Since I play it in my matches I lost very often, even to opponents which I have previously won and developed from best player in the league to only midfield. I know that its not all about my racket but also about my self but still I feel that Im not getting enough confidence throughout my choice of materials.
    As you noticed I am a modern defensive player who likes to be able to perform some defensive but also some offensive strokes with my backhand. so I am searching for somehow an allround pimple. For my forehand I think I would need something with a bit more control but it should still be fast enough because I perform topspins quite often. My wood should be not to fast becuse of my backhand. Do you think my wood is a good one to play with pimples or should I change?
    Please help me, tabletennis is my life and I currently feel so unhappy with my play eventhough I train up to 8 hours a week and at least two matches every weekend.
    PS: Keep up the good work on your channel, you really are a good coach!!

    • @pingsunday
      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +1

      hi kokol,
      first, acuda s1 turbo is not hard enough for your FH, and second you choose only 2.0mm.
      because it's not hard enough, you should choose max, or change a harder for your FH.
      second, donic Epox is not a good blade for defensive all round style. This blade is more fore allround close to the table, choose the larger head size blade, and heavier blade, you will find that these types of setup suites better your playing style :)

      Thank you for your quick response!!!
      If you say so, then I will probably go for a different rubber but with a harder sponge and I will aslo change my blade. Thanks again, I will let you know if it works out for me ;)

    hello emratthich.i want to ask you about something.im practicing the punch serve .i can do a long punch serve on both sides that cab reach very high speeds and be extremelyyy spin i usually use my whole body to hit it.but at the same time i cant make this serve short.even the slightest contact makes it jump alot.the thing is if i wud be able to do even half the spin short i wud be a beast at serving...i wanted to ask you how can i add so much spin in a punch serve(especially when i flick up for topspin)while making it a short serve?thanks you for the videos i love so much.

      to keep it short, you should accelerate at the moment of contact, use more of the body to serve.
      I will make another video for that.

      It's hard to do on side spin especially when it does not favor your dominant hand like a right handed pendulum to the Lefty's forehand side

    • @pingsunday
      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +2

      yes, and most of the time, they will drop shot this serve, and then you lose the "advantage of the server". Normally, the server who holds the ball will have a higher chance to win the point (this is called "advantage of the server"). That's the bad advice from a lot of coaches. :) bests

    Hey, EmRatThich, I've been playing a European/Japanese blade(Timo Boll ALC and Tenergy 05) now for about 2 to 3 years and I've never had any problem with it. I've only been playing for 4 years now and I'm a pretty young player, so I pretty much learned all of my techniques with this blade. So, should I really change my blade as you suggested in your videos about the Chinese philosophy? And if you think so, how should I change it? Should I only change the forehand rubber or even the entire wood? If you want to see me playing, there are numerous videos like the links I show you here: ruclips.net/video/JlG9yNt6oNU/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/nr3rXMx4Rxg/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/2KKVqbCX2vE/видео.html . Most of the links here are a bit older and my playing style has changed a bit since then of course(e.g. the stuff I'm doing wrong in the third video, faster forehand topspin, better footwork, etc.). The videos are already in public and even my schoolmates, as well as my chemistry teacher, have seen them, so I don't really care if I share it with you too. My dad needs a new racket too because his old one which I won is too fast for him, so I could even just try it out. Hope you'll respond! Thanks if so!

      @pingsunday  7 лет назад +1

      hi Henri, you are from Germany?
      first, Don't change the blade. Your playing style suits well with Boll ALC (it's a very good blade even for Chinese topspin style). I just say that, don't choose a very hard, carbon blade without feeling like tamca blade.
      For your playing style, you have the same problem as many amateur players. Don't know the good timing to hit the ball, and the footwork is bad.
      My advice: wait a little for the ball, don't hit too soon, and use the waist to generate power, after the shot, make a small step to move.

      And should I change my forehand rubber? If so, which one do you suggest? And no, I'm not from Germany! I'm from Franconia ;-)
