    I'm one of the folks on the CGC boards deep diving into this situation. Look, I get that wading through 250 pages of a thread where 90% of the comments are useless speculation and petty infighting nonsense is difficult, but you really should. Not a single comic pundit on youtube I've watched understands the depth of this problem. It's also kind of annoying to see many youtubers busy patting other youtubers on the back for their efforts on this, when it's the folks on the boards like Comicwiz who have done most of the heavy lifting. Yes, 99newstand noticed the first book, and yes automatic comics found a couple of hulks (after Comicwiz did), but that's basically it.
    The bulk of the story behind the story is based on board detective work. The only youtuber who's added value to the conversation is Rick from Immaculate Comics who has actually demonstrated the ability to open a case and remove the inner well and swap out a book with little noticeable disturbance to the case. He then followed that up with a video demonstrating with a more nuanced approach, one can actually switch the label opening one corner and pulling a switcheroo with next to no signs of tampering to the naked eye. This is a HUGE issue that cuts to the core of the CGC case design and likely affects FAR more comics than many (and CGC) want to care to admit.
    You guys joke about the slabs you have and how you're not worried because it's not Hulk 181's and ASM 300's or MJ variants. That's short-sighted. The problem revealed with the case opens up the possibility of scammers taking ANY higher grade book and swapping it with a lower grade blue copy, a qualified copy missing pages/coupons/mvs, a well presenting 0.5 copy missing centerfolds or inner wraps, even some possibly restored/conserved copies. It's all about the Benjamins and the money to be made in the gap between any high grade comic and its cheaper, lower grade but passable copy.
    Another aspect of this story is the insane level of price manipulation the particular submitter has been involved in for nearly a decade on ebay, shilling his auctions and propping the market up on certain books in order to maximize their FMV when sold via other sales channels like MCS, Comiclink, Insta or Facebook groups.
    Finally, the pundits who talk about the statistical significance of this scam get something wrong. They base their numbers off only what CGC has said are the number of books tampered with (hundreds) out of a pool of ALL slabs CGC has touched. They need to redo their math as no one is pulling this scam with $25 slabs of some IDW GI Joe comic. The pool of potential books targeted with this swap scam has to be a batch of books with great demand, it has to have significant worth contrasted with lower grade books and it has to have a lot of lower grade copies available and accessible as donor books either graded or raw.
    Oh, and of course if this activity is prevalent enough, it's surely going to have some impact on census numbers too.

      Hey, Binky - been a boardie since 2008, so I hear ya. But I do give boardies the credit in the video and even called them "Columbos".

    • @binkysphinx
      @binkysphinx 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@BronzeAndModernGods It's not so much validation for their efforts so much as it is recognizing that what boardies have uncovered implies the problem expands far beyond this being just the casual," lone gunman," statistically insignificant situation CGC and many prominent youtube pundits would like it to be.

    Hi guys! This may have already been addressed, but there is a reason Marvel issued a facsimile of Giant-Size Super-Star #1. That issue was the first of Marvel’s Giant-Size issues. For the 50th anniversary of Marvel’s Giant-Size books, Marvel is putting out facsimile editions of their Giant-Size books this year, beginning with this one! The More You Know… Keep up the great work! Thanks!

    The scam goes beyond just modern Mark Jewelers and Marvel Stamp books. At least one of the uncovered fraudulent books was a Purple label book that was missing a page and then put into a Blue label case of the same book. That could happen to any type of book.

    My PC is down to 22 books. Had a dozen or so long boxes now reduced to my slabs of mostly “big boy” books. I am furious. I have a H180,181 both CGC mid-grade. A GXS1. Two in fact. 7.0 and 4.5. X-Men 94 7.0 Silver Surfer #4. Batman 227 and 251. HOS 92 (although lower grade) and some others that I can only wonder if I got royally F-d believing in this company. Regardless of if my books are legit or not, how does the belief in CGC affect my investment when/if I decide to sell? I feel like I overpaid for books that I should have sought after in raw. I could have slabbed when/if I ever decided to sell and at that time used the best option.

    The problem with CGC's Worst Case Scenario (as I've dubbed it) is scammers can swap incomplete books from any era into 9+ graded cases. I just hope that hasn't been going on for years already.

    Dan DeCarlo did all the interior art on Millie from issues #17-92 and it is wonderful!! I have a bunch of those! By the way, why was the buyer's premium $29 for a $30 book? I thought it was 20%...this is almost 100%!

    Stig's Inferno! Wow, I didn't think I'd ever see that title mentioned on your show! Vortex published some interesting, yet short lived titles during the Black & White boom of the 80s, a topic that could be interesting to explore on your show (if it hasn't been yet). Hmm...I'm getting nostalgic and need to dig out my copies of Nervous Rex and Journey.

    Just use CBCS, like I do. More consistent grading, better cases, no Newton rings, and no book swap scandal (or acetate scandal, or invisible book scandal). I am aware that they lost a shipment of books during the pandemic, but the submitter was compensated. Sure, resale prices are a bit lower than CGC, but how long is that going to last? Lack of trust in CGC (and the new CBCS label) will probably boost CBCS sales prices, especially for books which are known to have been a target for scammers.

    I'm 40 years old and just getting into comics. I have a background of sports cards and tcg cards. I bought a lot of vintage spiderman comics and a lot of vintage batman off ebay for my kids for Christmas. Well I was playing Santa putting comics in the stocking on Xmas eve and decided to check them out. Now I'm hooked and bought the first miles and first appearance of punisher the list goes on lol. Anyway thanks for the very informative videos keep it up guys.

    Happy New Year John and Richard.
    I'm a big fan of Marvel's Bronze Age Giant-Size books, I like how they served a range of purposes: some like GS Avengers wove into and out of the monthly series, others like GS Chillers didn't but still offered very good stories and yet others were simply reprint books (though why Marvel Triple Action required its own GS I could never understand); GS Invaders #1 was used to launch the title; GS Spider-Man was a de facto GS Marvel Team-Up book. Many are still easy to find in top condition but a few, like GS Kid Colt, are much harder to track down. So much collectability!
    GCG's response included the following priceless statement: "CGC exists to protect the collecting community". No, it exists to make money and if this incident had not been brought to the attention of the public but CGC knew about it, I am certain that nothing would have happened to risk that income.

    • @reprintranch
      @reprintranch 9 месяцев назад

      I just bought a copy of the first GS Marvel Triple Action, for fun. Yeah, it's an odd mix.
      As you probably know, the mid-60s Avengers material was already being reprinted chronologically in the regular-size Marvel Triple Action, and that title went on hiatus for a few months while the two GS issues were produced, using the same two Avengers stories that would have appeared in the next two issues of the normal-size comic.
      Daredevil and Dr. Strange were not being systematically reprinted at the time, so far as I know. But GS Triple A ran two chronological stories from each character.
      After GS Marvel Triple Action ceased production, Marvel launched a six-issue Daredevil reprint title, Marvel Adventures, that followed up on the Daredevil continuity from the two GS issues.
      Similarly, after GS Marvel Triple Action folded, the title Strange Tales was switched over from new material to Dr. Strange reprints, beginning with the same story that appeared in GS Triple A issue 2.
      Overall, I'm guessing that Marvel's initial objective was to test the waters for a possible revival of the "giant all-reprint title," which had been lucrative in the '60s and early '70s.

    • @charliedogg7683
      @charliedogg7683 9 месяцев назад

      I think that's a very good guess. And those reprint books were how many of us in the 70s got to read older stories - I know that I discovered the breadth and history of Marvel through their Bronze Age reprints and through the Newton Comics b/w reprints here in Australia. @@reprintranch

    Happy New Year
    The thing that struck me about their statement was when they said they were the target of bad actors because of the trust they built
    But if we remember the acetate UF4 that was an in-house decision to give those books blue label nobody tricked them they know the rules for staples in every other situation and threw out the rules until called out
    Hopefully they improve something maybe have a grader sit at the reholder station and check the book before giving the ok to reholder
    People mentioned a case redesign that would probably take more time to test and design
    They could go back to the way the labels used to be we have to remember they’re a multimillion dollar company with Black Rock involved Black Rock is worth billions if they have to pay $11,000 because some got scammed because they let lower grade books pass through they gotta make it right
    I can’t see anyone getting taken for $10,000 and CGC tries to give $2,000 and $500 CGC credit
    It’s a great thing the community is so vigilant because comic shops high end dealers all were watching CGC when they put out that statement

    Regarding the re-grading - so now that we've seen what we've seen, I think that (up to now at least), there is re-grading for signature series (I saw a video recently where someone said they got a lower grade back from a book sent in for signature), but not for reholder.
