Nailed it! The sounds of the original pac man are definitely what bring be back to being a teenager with a pocket full of quarters walking 2 miles to the local arcade to get in line to play as long as those quarters could last me! Thanks for the detailed review! 👍

MyArcade's problem is they hit the mark too perfectly with Space Invaders. Now they want to go back to cutting corners but we know they can do so much better. Such a shame..
You're right, and I worry that Space Invaders is just that perfect storm that may not be easily repeatable. SI has that gimmick of the reflective moonscape that very few other games employed (Asteroids?). Switching to genuine arcade ROMs would be a great start, though.

I tossed the instructions in one of the first couple videos on this channel years ago and several people commented that it was amusing, so I figured I'd lean into it. Ever since then I have never missed an opportunity to throw those instructions away! Thanks for watching enough to notice the trend! 😊
Thanks for this review! I'd been looking forward to this since it was announced back in the spring. The 40th anniversary packaging and lenticular art look amazing. I got it to go along with the Toru Iwatani autographed Numskull and the A1Up Pac-Man 40th cabinet. I gave it to my wife to hold on to and to give to me on Christmas. Now I know to just keep it sealed in a display case.
You bet, Matthew. It's really a missed opportunity here. Such a gorgeous cabinet and then they stopped short of putting the genuine version of the game in it. If they had given this the Contra treatment and bumped the price up to $50 similar to that unit, this would have been a much, much better product.
I loved it how passionate you were about the disappointing, but very good looking, release. Just bought it for $60.

If you want to save the score you need to use the auto- shut down feature. Just put it down and it will shut off in like 30 seconds, keeping the high scores. Bonus for not having to turn it off ever. I put tape on the switch to save our HS

I found out in a video online and then checked the actual game itself to make sure, but this ROM was taken from a Sega Genesis game Pacman 2 the New Adventures. There is a bonus Pacman game on it and this is the game they used on the 40th Anniversary My Arcade Micro Cab!
It's interesting to learn, but only further saddens me that the device marketed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this legendary title only warranted a bonus knock-off version of the game from Sega. 🥲

I got it! When the pacman eats the pellets the sound is that of leather rubbing together which gives me a headache.

This is actually the same version they used for their pocket player. But the sound effects on the pocket player are different and are a bit more accurate

I agree. I have the regular version of the PacMan game and like it fine enough. I even have the early 1980's Coleco version with two joysticks (and it works!!). I was considering shelling out for the 40th anniversary too but I suspected it was mere window dressing.
Like John I think if you want to HONOUR the heritage of this game (or, really, anything) you need to do it right; to up the quality of the gameplay not merely make it 'pretty' and charge more. In some ways, this is a slap in the face to the buyer. Indeed, you can almost imagine the guys who came up with this idea thinking "hey, we could really make this a top-notch version, put more quality into it, make it really realistic, charge more, but kill our margins. OR we can decorate what we have, maybe use a slightly geared-down version of what we have (to save some bucks), then slap a 40th-anniversary label on it, and a few other visuals, then double the price, and let these suckers buy it thinking it's special when it's really just money in our pockets.?" "Yeah, let's pick option 2!" And that's how you get this; not a lovely lady you can adore, but a pig with lipstick on it.
This is not only not right, but it's also an insult! Instead of giving customers value for their money, it cheapens the whole brand; not just this one item but almost everything else too. I hope the guys who decided to do this realize that and just how much Good Will this costs them. It makes fans of this brand a bit more leery about buying not just this item but for any other items they may produce as well.
Frankly, we deserve better; better value, better quality, and better respect from this company that has, until now, produced some very credible products. If they are now content to merely monetize the legacy of products we remember and love, if they won't step up to the plate and bring us quality and value, then maybe they should step aside and let a competitor do what they are no longer willing; namely, honour the material and honour the fans and customers.
This is a lesson many companies have learned the hard way; when you give up genuine quality to make a few extra bucks, you not only insult your base and your customers, you will also lose them and your business too. That's what happened to Atari, Coleco, Commodore, Texas Instruments, Timex Sinclair and a plethora of other companies in the '80s and since that got greedy, didn't innovate, and treated their customers with contempt.

Looks like this one wasn't what you expected. Too bad they can't get a license from NAMCO/Bandai and get the original ROM.

A lot of things you buy these days either doesn't last, or you get something that is subpar.
I recently bought this gold trimmed version. Of all the ones on ebay for sale none have all the gold trim only have the gold joystick and buttons and its in the 50th anniversay packaging. maybe this gold trim version is rarer than you think. I also bought the other version without all the gold trim. Both were $5.00 at a local yardsale.

I was planning to buy this one, but after hearing the sound, I’m buying the normal one, i think this one can be displayed and not opened outside of the box, if you want to.

Hi Jon, how's your recovery going? Thinking about you brother. BTW. I received my Gold Anniversary unit today. Yeah, the sounds really suck, but I did discover something worth mentioning. When I tested the headphone out connector on a wired pair of ear buds as well as a powered speaker, the audio sounds were far superior. Very noticeable difference, especially with the credit/coin button press. This makes me believe that the issue might be the internal board sending the signal to the cabinet speaker or even the speaker itself. Either way, this should have never passed QC for production approval.

I know EXACTLY why it sounds like that now! The rom in here seems to be the same one that the pocket player had, which was confirmed to run on sega genesis/mega drive hardware. Some sega genesis mini consoles made by mainly …atgames… have horrible sound quality-with the sound being pitched down by the exact amount, so this is most likely the pocket player version but running on the same sound hardware that those atgames consoles used, which is stupid, because the pocket player is pitched correctly and they obviously could’ve used the pocket player hardware.
I just got this and I like playing it. My only complaints are the sound and the control is not perfect but it’s great.
The Rom on this unit looks to be the same one that was used in the My Arcade Pocket Player pacman unit, except the sounds are off.
I don't collect the Pocket Players myself, but I've had a few viewers mention that.
I think the Pocket Player was running a "one chip Genesis". Those clone chips were notorious for bad sound too. This version might be a custom Genesis ROM.

Looks like it plays well and the gold finish looks nice, but dang that sound. Even my really tiny keychain pacman machine has the correct sounds.
Yeah, so close to being worthwhile.
Pac Man is one of my all time favorites and I enjoy all versions. IMO even the original sounds are pretty annoying. I've even been tempted to try ROM hacking to remove the constant "woo woo" sound. I always play with the sound off or very low. So sound is not a huge deal for myself. The fact that this is a different remake is appealing to me. I have the arcade version and the NES version and I have my specific patterns and routines for each one. This version would play different and require different patters so it's basically a new game. For that reason I'm very tempted to grab one.
Intriguing. I've never run into anyone who found Pac-Man's sound effects to be annoying. That siren in particular, which gradually increases in speed & pitch, is one of my favorite hallmarks of the title. But based on your preferences, this might be right for you!
What? Would you rather play PAC-MAN without the sounds? The sounds are such a part of the original arcade experience, and are some of the most iconic sounds in all of gaming! How are they annoying?!
Man, the Basic Fun 40th Pac-Man unit is much better, despite not being an exact Rom either, but they got the sound right

go for the Numskull Designs Quarter Arcade PAC-MAN @alkydaklown I have it and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. Yes it is a tad pricey but for me as a die-hard fanatic of the original....To me, apart from the countercade one the one I enjoy daily to me is the most accurate replica of PAC-MAN...Best wishes in your quest to find him.

I buy the majority of mine when they're released so I'm not a real expert on bargain hunting. In general, keep an eye on thrift stores & flea markets for people getting rid of collections they no longer want.

@@GenXGrownUp I recently found a good day that I bought about two days ago, it was galigsian (I know I spelled it wrong, I’m meaning the other Galaga.) dig dug my arcade micro players, and a arcade classics non-deluxe arcade classics Tetris, and a Atari pace man micro player. It was 36$! It rounded up to 50$ with shipping, but still a great deal! I think I did pretty good.
It has been almost 1 year and the back of the machine where the battery cover in gold was removed

The Namco Arcade & Data East Arcade units from MA are a lot like what you describe. No SSF2, but lots of greats.
THANK YOU Jon, you just saved me 40 bucks. I'd considered gettin' it but like everyone else I wanted to see if it emulated the REAL arcade rom...what a huge letdown for me. I do have the first PAC-MAN My Arcade game that came out in 2018 as well as the Pocket Player (for Pac-Attack, Pac-Mania) But for a die-hard fan of the original I will stick to my Plug 'n' Play and my Numskull Designs Quarter Arcade Cabinet. That one to me is as close to authenticity as u can get without being heavily price gouged as I feel Arcade 1up is doing to consumers just because the consumer has to assemble it. For me I'd highly recommend the Numskull Designs Quarter Arcade to all PAC-MAN die-hards here like me. I DID also buy the Ms. PAC-MAN Quarter Arcade cabinet for my mom at Christmas in 2019.

Numskull Designs did a 40th anniversary cabinet too somewhat reasonably priced and THEY stuck to the original arcade rom emulations and IT DOES save your high score. Just the cabinet is designed differently to commemorate his 40th anniversary...

I wouldn't call myself a purist, but the sound is a completely different pitch and that's grating. The Pac Man sounds are iconic and well known. You just can't afford to mess that up.
Just wondering though, is the sound better through external speakers or headphones? The difference was spectacular with Space Invaders. Maybe the internal speaker is awful?
Hey, Darth. Because you asked I did give it a quick try through my earbuds. It sounds substantially clearer & louder, but the same problematic pitch & cadence issues you can hear through the speaker. So no quick fix there, unfortunately. Thanks for asking!

Thats not the actual sounds. Your speaker may be bugged because mine sounds amazingly close to the original
Those are the sounds being produced by the hardware. I did an audio comparison bypassing the speaker and capturing audio straight out of the headphone jack. ruclips.net/video/aN-YaouuUoM/видео.html Just way off pitch, as heard here in this review.
Another great video. In this day and age it is ridiculous that they are not using the original rom. Is it a licensing issue? Maybe Namco’s deal with Arcade 1up and Numskull means no one else can use the original rom.
Anyway, imo this 40th anniversary unit is a bit too gaudy for my liking, I think the gold makes it look a bit tacky.

The Reason Why You Can Screw Off The Joystick Is To Use The D-Pad Cross If Desired For Certain Games. All Tho Doing This Takes Away The Arcade Feel Play.

Huge pac man fan here ;) I have the Super Pac-Man Arcade 1Up Countercade, which is cool, but also have the Ultimate Legends Arcade & Pinball, but still mostly play on original vintage consoles. The arcades are neat to own, though, and fun to play. Thx for the great video!

I’ve watched a bunch of these mini arcade reviews, and I just don’t understand the appeal. Even if it had an arcade perfect rom, it doesn’t seem like it would be fun (or comfortable) to play on these tiny units. And they’re too expensive to just collect dust on a shelf as a “collectible”. But I will admit these videos are fun to watch from a “what did they screw up this time” perspective. But in my opinion, there are much better ways to enjoy classic retro games. 😃
I agree with you almost completely, Kelly. There are absolutely better ways to play these games. We only differ our assessment of their value as collectibles. At mostly $20 (give or take), I find them to be wonderfully collectible and even in the boxes they look great on display in my man cave. They're only a bit more expensive than collecting things like Pop Vinyl figures or Beanie Babies, plus these little arcade-cabinet-shaped doo-dads remind me at a glance of my time in the arcade as a young lad, and you can't put a price on that!
@Ryan Looney My Arcade in particular seems to be taking that approach, for sure. I can't remember the last new $25 micro player that got released. Basic Fun, however, seems to be doubling down on that $19.99 positioning and it looks to be working for them.

found this old video of yours and wanted to ask you if there are any mini pac man machines that have the joystick in the center like the original arcade machine. I played right handed back in the day. This lefthand joystick just feels off to me.
The only one I can think of (and it's on the high side) is the Pac-Man Numskull cabinet.

Ok this is really late but I’m wondering if anyone knows. My nephew was playing with my little arcade, a regular one not the 40th anniversary edition. And all of a sudden I hear a song playing from it, the screen was now showing a key test screen…we can’t figure out how to get to it again
I vaguely remember seeing an article about how to get the Micro Players into a diagnostic mode, but after a little searching, I was unable to find it again. Maybe another viewer will see this and remember.
Maybe there is a way you can modify it to play the sounds closer

Did you plug it into an external speaker setup like you did with that Space Invaders system? I recall how the sound was trash on that until you used the external speakers. Honestly, I am not a fan of My Arcade. Just feel that most of their stuff is cash grabs, and not worth the price they slap on their units.
By the way, had to look this up. I wasn't aware that BNEI is actually Bandai Namco. The fact they dropped the ball on this thing is sad really.
Yeah, I tried this with my earphones and it's just a clearer version of those awful sounds. With Space Invaders, the only real issue was volume. You don't want to hear these sounds any louder, believe me!

That was really just a description of how it felt. We already know that My Arcade has the rights to use the arcade version of Pac-Man in a device because it's in the Namco Arcade as well as the new hook-it-to-your-tv HDMI game console.

I don’t like that stick screwed on to the dpad controller . They need to make a real mini stick
It actually feels OK, but nowhere near as nice as that nice metal-shaft stick on the MA Space Invaders.
I love your reviews but I think you're off on this one. I own the unit and I don't feel the sound is that far off, and the gameplay is really good. I don't understand in this day and age why it's so hard to get exact what developers were able to do 40 years ago, but I'm happy with the unit and feel it's very faithful to the Pac-Man experience. What I don't like is getting horrible NES knockoffs like the Heavy Barrel unit which looks and sounds nothing like the arcade version (and wasn't advertised as the NES version), and you were pleased with that one, so I'm not sure where the bar stands. All said, I enjoy your channel, but I'm not understanding the hatred of this Pac-Man unit.
Hey, Dan. Thanks for watching and for your observations. Lots of variables in there and each review is a snapshot of the current times. If Heavy Barrel were released today, it likely may not review as high. But that's kind of immaterial here, I think. Overall, I really expected nothing short of a genuine ROM (or very accurate re-write) from My Arcade in a 40th Anniversary device, especially after that wonderful Space Invaders. They could've done it 100% right and chose not to, and that stung. They raised their own bar of excellence and then determined Pac-Man's 40th wasn't worthy of that quality? Boo.

But how does it sound with headphones plugged in? Any better? Could be a bad speaker. I have a myarcade Bad Dudes where you can't hear the "We're bad!" at the end of a level but you can hear it when playing with headphones...
