    A trick I like to use for pentatonics.. especially minor (but any pentatonic scale or mode works) is once you have the pentatonic down in all five box positions, just add a note in between every "whole step only" within the scale, essentially making them into triplets.. it works really well and makes your runs sound faster and more complicated than they really are.

      So, instead of root then 1.5 step, 1 step, 1 step, 1.5 step, 1 step back to root octave, your saying, root,,then 1.5, then .5, then .5, then .5, then .5, then 1.5, then .5, then .5 back to root? For example: Am pentatonic. A-C-D-E-G, you’re playing: A-C-C#-D-D#-E-G-G#-A? Correct? Playing C-C#-D, then D-D#-E, and G-G#-A as triplets? You just hit that D twice in a row or what?

    I know all those positions and never, ever thought of just playing them like that. Thanks Dweezil.

    As a sax player that enjoys molesting guitars i have to say that this really snapped my synapses. When I experiment with guitars for me it's mostly by ear and by watching the patterns on the neck. It was total awesomeness for me to hear DZ describing this way of thinking about playing! (Particularly if you factor in that he is one of my guitar / band leader heroes who also happens to be the son of my all time guitar / bandleader / composer hero).

    Move either a tone or minor third either way on any note, tune your ear to hear the next note. It takes a bit of practice but thinking in intervals will free your playing up!.

    Definitely gonna try this.
    I usually just practice starting at a root, and jump up and down the octaves of that note, trying to play as random of patterns and combinations of notes as possible within the scale. As a bonus I like to articulate ways of traversing into different scales, can sound kinda funky and weird. But hey, that's ok right?

    break out of the pentatonic scale by using the pentatonic scale!?!?!?

    • @jakeschleifer1303
      @jakeschleifer1303 9 лет назад +3

      That's what I was thinking lol

    • @JakeMcBain
      @JakeMcBain 9 лет назад +5

      theres no need to break out of the pentatonic, just add to it. Add notes from different scales like mixolydian or diminished or the altered scale

    • @RASTAxSKATE
      @RASTAxSKATE 8 лет назад +3

      +Jake McBain it's all the same scale

    • @cam1956
      @cam1956 8 лет назад +21

      I think it is quite clear he is talking about breaking the mentality of exclusively or predominantly using the shape normally associated with that scale. For those interested in being less bound by their motor skills on the instrument. The lesson is about using smaller chunks to see the larger picture.

    I'm guessing this just a sample of the truefire lesson...a "demonstration" of what you'd get in the complete lesson. You kinda need to know the 5 full pentatonic "boxes" for this video to make the most sense. I can see why a beginner might give this YT vid a thumb down.
