To answer ?'s about propane being used to cut metal. I worked for several years at a large salvage yard. Propane and liquid oxygen is all we used to prepare scrap. I ran a Victor Harris torch with a number 3 tip and I've cut through a solid steel shaft from an old GE armacher. The shaft was at least 12" in diameter. I've also cut through 5" plate with the same tip. Also, great vid 351wsvo. I just started teaching myself to braze (with propane of course).
I like the way you make things work. You seem to know a lot about torches and have several contacts to help you with these projects. But...for most of us making our own cylinders, making and adding adapters, putting tanks in refrigerators, transferring gas between cylinders would be way too dangerous because something is going to go explosively wrong, negating all the cost savings. But seeing how you came up with these projects along with the your ingenuity is still fun to watch.

I looks like it is way too hot for just brazing. I don’t know, I have never used propane and getting tanks filled seems real expensive anymore. Either way, if that’s you tip, you can back off both the gas & Ox and concentrate the flame a little smaller & tighter. Who knows, maybe you can save more fuel. I go by the flame period. If using another fuel, I would “Sight” the flame and start low depending on thickness of materials. You can always bump it up, but remember, you can also burn the metal. Cleaning, flux for brazing rod and go for a slight capillary action, when one fits over the other. Automotive master tech since 1978 - Retired (My torch = 1982 / 150 amp MIG = 1984)

My Bad, yeah was refering to a plumbers soldering kit. Ok he asked for a small kit, so try Bernzomatic multi-use torch kit. It states you can braze and cut up to 3/4" bolts with disposable tanks and includes hose and regulator and rods for about $60 at Home Depot.
Fyi MC stands for motorcycle it was used for acetylene headlamps . also you should be careful when emptying out acetylene tanks if it comes out to fast appox 15 lbs refer to your gauge red line it can self ignite there is also liquid acetone in side
I don't see any reason why those homebrew tanks would be necessary. You can hook up an ordinary propane barbecue tank to a propane regulator that you buy from a welding supply store. Then you just need a propane tip, also easy to find if you are using a recently-made handle (and even for some older handles).
They aren't and this video is an example of excellent enthusiasm and very little homework. Damn nice custom LP tank though but not DOT rated, not that it matters in this case. Oxy-LP cutting and brazing is quite common and not unusual at all. The soft parts of quality acetylene regulators (Smith, Harris, Victor, ESAB, etc) are compatible with LP and may be used with it. If in doubt contact your own regulator makers tech support. Non-crap acetylene regulators with CGA-510 inlet fittings have internal soft parts compatible with LP. (Victor, Smith, Harris etc) and you can verify with your regulator maker if theirs is compatible. The customized MC and built-from-scratch tanks are cool as is the adapter. The adapter and MANY others are available online. Western is the US industry leader for gas fittings. What many weldors self included do instead of modding an MC tank is refill disposable LP tanks and adapt those to our OA or OP regulators. Be sure to remove any flow restrictors when doing so. I rebuild equipment using factory tech data for myself and collect torches and regulators. Rebuilding oxygen regulators is most convenient if you send them off since the cleaning is more work than it's worth. See Weldingweb for user recommended rebuilders or go through your local welding supply. I go even further for light weight and use medical oxygen cylinders which I transfill (google "transfill whip") from my large oxygen cylinders. My oxygen whips are CGA 540 males on a pigtail. I connect that to a CGA 540 tee with an oxygen regulator on the opposite side to monitor fill pressure and vent the line after the transfill. Lots of info on the net but know and work to "oxygen safe" standards and do not fuck around! NEVER fill a damaged cylinder. Never store ANY fuel gas cylinder inside a closed vehicle. It's often done but explosions can easily scatter your truck! Safety Note: Anyone can do this sort of thing if you STUDY seriously first. If you aren't dead serious about safety then find another hobby so you don't kill anyone who doesn't deserve it. Weldingweb and the Miller forums are excellent resources. Videos are useful but don't try to rely on them because text is inherently much more precise.
yeah propane works great for brazing. The only thing they say is you have to watch carburizng some metals and contaminating the joint (i forget what exactly). But feh, i've never had a problem personally
You get a hose and valve and connect the small empty tank to a larger tank ,like a BBQ tank. You put the small tank in a freezer for a couple hours first till it's very cold.Make sure the bigger tank is upside-down. then open the valves and wait till the small tank fills.Careful not too full! Must have proper space for expansion.
I agree while you can braze ok with this setup just fine, but I gather your an HVAC or plumber so your really almost doing a high octane high test version of sweating pipe. Actual high heat brazing on thicker material where ALL metals including filler must be worked into a puddle propane starts to show it's usefulness. I had a very experienced HVAC tech here tell me you don't need that kind of heat for copper pipe so this setup is more than enough. Awsome adaptors too, very versitile. Cheers, IC

I use Turbotorch STK-99 with propane (No oxygen) for brazing copper. Seem to work OK for the small pipe size I do (1/4 OD and 1/2 Plumbing). I do copper annealing with it (20 oz, 18 inch disk)... but it seems to be very slow compare to the oxy-acetylene variety. (Like 1/2 hour for the disk). Propane tank -- standard BBQ -- 20 lbs. I don't need to refill too often.

Hi i'm Ben I love your vids and I do the same as you and braze with propane and i also braze really short rods together to make a long one again!! why throw them out anyway we pay for the rod it costs a price and brazing them together saves money and rods!! Who needs a mig welder, when propane can provide tougher joints via brazing than welding? Plus nobody likes arc rays and smoke at all. Mig and Tig can braze but only with shielding gas plus they're limited to indoor shop work. Not to mention, propane can be used both indoors and outdoors.
That all makes sense to me. About the only disadvantage I know of would be that brazing with a torch would probably be slower than arc welding. However, in non-industrial settings the speed of welding, or the time required to complete a specific weld, may not matter.
When i was a teenager a buddy of mine had a used Mustang that had a leaky radiator his Dad fixed the leak by brazing a old penny over the hole(heads Up) of course for good luck ! Over 40 years later i always check at car shows looking for that radiator in another car ! So far no luck yet but my guess is its still out there BTW my freinds Dad was a Maintenance man in a Hospital kind of a Jack of All Trades my freind was happy his car was on the road

first of all im surprised to realize that propane has more btu's/cf then acyt yet acyt is a hotter flame?perhaps because adibatic temp is diffrent than btu? also it seems propane and acyt have the same 21600 btu's/lb?? i guess propane must be lighter by vol, i made some calcs according to specs online saying 1cf of prop=2570btu,1cf of acyt=1450btu ,and it is almost half of the weight of acyt,, second why did you build that aluminum cyl for? will they actually fill it for you something home made like that? its illegal to fill,even for propane they are strict now about tank expiry date much less something you built
I have found you use 3 x the amount of oxygen per fuel when using propane or natural gas Vs. using Acetylene and oxygen. However if you can get a good deal on oxygen and don't have the means to use Acetylene. This dose work. However your limited on what you can use your torch set for.. your limited by the max heat you can make with the fuel of your choice.. As for me, I tend to use both depending on my needs.. Getting tanks filled is getting very hard to do if you own your own tanks and don t want to surrender your tanks or pay rental rates.. The newer laws and company policy are designed to screw the little guy and give more control to the corporate bussiness.

Did you watch the whole video? is your tip rebated at the end? Propane press. is about 5-6 and Oxy is 15-18. The tip is interchangeable. It is a Victor. Number 2 Type TEN #0311-0485 tip and Number 6 TEMF #0311-0676 and #0324-0094 tube for 100FC handle
@mjphx Yes it is a victor propane tip .Or you can countersink a standard tip yourself our can actually use a standard tip without the countersink with a little more difficulty.

No offense to you and your friends, but I wouldn’t trust that homemade tank at high pressure. The design is not the proper shape for high pressure gas. It’s adequate for soft drinks or handheld fire extinguishers, but I wouldn’t trust it for high pressure gas. Interesting video, though. 👍🏻
At the risk of being petty the title is misleading , your brazing with Oxy-Propane which ain't the same hence why the two bottles and way more heat . Jealously l only have a propane set up, Bullfinch . A very decent English made unit been around a long time now but the issue still remains regardless of the two gasses being that a Propane flame is oxydizing causing terrible wetting issues as mild steel turns black with this flame . Great for cutting they keep saying but Oxy- propane brazing not so good , l really wish they were wrong but not so unless you have a way around it , fluxes or flame changes ? Thanks for the video , just frustrated now being stuck spinning my wheels on this issue a while .Lol.

Very much the same as with acetylene. You can also put the flame on a piece of copper and adjust until it looks like a new penny where the flame is

How did you remove the porus off the mc tank?

They are the same. One has acetylene gas in it one has propane liquid in it.

Brazing copper requires no flux. It is self cleaning.

If you want to use air, there is no need to compress it - just use a standard propane torch which sucks in air.

No offense to you and your friends, but I wouldn’t trust that homemade tank at high pressure. The design is not the proper shape for high pressure gas. It’s adequate for soft drinks or handheld fire extinguishers, but I wouldn’t trust it for high pressure gas. Interesting video, though. 👍🏻

At the risk of being petty the title is misleading , your brazing with Oxy-Propane which ain't the same hence why the two bottles and way more heat . Jealously l only have a propane set up, Bullfinch . A very decent English made unit been around a long time now but the issue still remains regardless of the two gasses being that a Propane flame is oxydizing causing terrible wetting issues as mild steel turns black with this flame . Great for cutting they keep saying but Oxy- propane brazing not so good , l really wish they were wrong but not so unless you have a way around it , fluxes or flame changes ? Thanks for the video , just frustrated now being stuck spinning my wheels on this issue a while .Lol.
