    After browsing RUclips in the wee hours of the morning, i stumbled across this channel.............needless to say I'm hooked!
    Thank you for being an American abroad who gives such accurate and descriptive information about Germany. Your videos are making me super anxious/excited for my own upcoming German exchange.

    I hate to bring this up on such an amazing video, but I have to say that "the beginning of the English Garden" is not really the beginning of the English Garden. What you're seeing there is the Hofgarten (the Royal Garden), and from there it is still a 7-10 minute walk to the English Garden.

    I know that it's touristy, but the Chinesischer Turm beer garden in the Englischer Garten on a beautiful warm or hot sunny day is heaven. And, the tourists from ALL over the world and the natives enjoying it, just makes it better. Also, floating down the Eisbach in the park on a hot day cannot be beat. Plus time spent in the park shows just how laid back Germans can be, helping squelch the stereotype of Germans being cold and rigid.

  • @benjaminfleckenstein8742
    @benjaminfleckenstein8742 8 лет назад +1

    An 'english' garden is supposed to look like nature - like a piece of unmaintained forest basically. So the walkways would curve, the trees and bushes are let grown, etc.
    The other style of garden is called a french garden. There the walkways will be straight, and parallel, the bushes and tree will be cut to geometrical forms and so on.

    This video should be shown to every foreigner to get a real first impression about munich. Just to get the feeling, why so many people like and love this city. I actually live (and been raised) just a few kilometers to the west (kinda close to Augsburg, too).
    It is a beautiful and calm city, although pretty huge, it sometimes feels, even in the city centre, like you are in the middle of a small village. And that, I think, is very unique.
    It can also be vibrant, loud and extroverted. Very colorful and creative.
    Just check it out yourself some time, it will be totally worth it! :D

    First of all: I love your videos! Both of you! They are awesome! Now, the thing about rubbing the lions noses for good luck. It's a pretty long story, but the short version is that a commoner tricked the king into giving him a lot of money. And he got it in coins. So he went out of the palace with his bag of coins and was so relieved that all went well, he had to hold onto the lion because he was afraid to faint. In that moment he dropped his bag and all the coins fell out and the people who saw this believed that he touched the lion and this pile of gold just fell out of the sky in front of him. Ergo: Touch the lions nose and you will get rich!

    I been to Munich several times (well, about 10 or so) and there's a lot of things you missed - The Glockenspiel - should have seen it you were at Marienplatz, Olympic Village, Deutches Museum - cool museum, BMW museum also cool, the Hirschgarten (or any bier Garten really, much nicer than HB haus and the tourist trap indoor brewery pub things), the exception would be the Paulaner brewery (try Salvator stark bier), the U-bahn is cool, Frauenkirche, Schwabing, Englisher Garten (I guess you talked about it but didn't go?), Nympenburg schloss, of there's Dachau just outside of town. I can understand that you only had 1 day or less - really takes a few days and to really do it quickly, you'd need a car or help from someone that can plan it out and get you around to all the areas. One time I spent a week there for work and went out every night and closed the pubs a few times. There's one place you go when all the others are closed - forget the name.

  • @normanroscher7545
    @normanroscher7545 9 лет назад +6

    To make that clear: in the city palace you were talking about the king of Bavaria. So he would not have had the chance to live in another castle in Germany, only those in Bavaria. The other states had their own monarchs.
    Germany never had a king as an entity, but a Kaiser, which translates by "Emperor". The word Kaiser comes from Caesar, and the concept was copied from the Romans.

    • @martinledermann1862
      @martinledermann1862 9 лет назад

      Norman Roscher Was he not rather a duke/prince? I've only heard of the Duchy of Bavaria, never of such a kingdom. I know they're just American tourists so expecting them to know the intricacies of the European feudal system would be stupid but it'd be better if they just settled for the more universal terms such as 'monarch' or just simply a 'ruler'.

    • @normanroscher7545
      @normanroscher7545 9 лет назад

      Martin Ledermann Nope! That goes for most states, but Bavaria had a king. Check out King Ludwig, who had the Castle of Neuschwanstein built!
      There also were a few others. I think Württemberg used to have a king, too, and Holstein.

    • @martinledermann1862
      @martinledermann1862 9 лет назад

      Norman Roscher OK, my bad then, I wasn't aware of that part of the Bavarian history and have just looked it up. Still, for the most of their existence as a separate entity, they remained a duchy and became a kingdom only at the very end, which they remained for just a century, so not much of a true kingdom, really ;P

    • @Skyldyel
      @Skyldyel 9 лет назад +2

      +Martin Ledermann +Norman Roscher Both is right. Bavaria was made a kingdom on 26.12.1805 Before that it was a Herzogtum, or Duchy.

    1. You wish the walls of the Residenz were real? Thanks to you guys (Americans) the entire inner city was bombed down to a pile of gravel in July 1944. What you see today is what was rebuilt after the war ended. 2. The "Englisch Garten" got its name from the idea that in contrary to the French gardens of the time, the garden would not be in rows and squares filled with flowers, but rather like a wild park. Also, the Duke who gave the order to build it wanted the normal folks be able to use it. Today it is the largest park within city limits in the world.

    Great video :)
    One nitpick:
    When she told you you were in the English-Garden you really where in the Hofgarten right in front of the residence. It was used for riding horses and stuff. The English-Garden is very much "untamed" and huge. The Eisbach by the way was right at the border of the english garden. So there you go :) You have been there.

    As far as I know, the fundamental difference between swabian and bavarian Brezen is, that the swavian version more or less has one diameter the whole thing. The bavarian has a very thick, fluffy part and thin, crunchy "arms".

    There are different way to style your park: the "natural" looking park as is most common does not cut trees or hedges in a particular shape as is the case with a french garden: A french park, if you will, uses geometric forms that hedges and trees are cut into. There is also the option of a "german" variety but I know only of one such park which is located in northern bavaria in "Veitshöchheim".

    What you experience at the time is the bavarian culture not the german culture. That whole beer and lederhosen stuff. You should visit some cities in the northern and western part of Germany, like Cologne or Düsseldorf. They may not be as beautiful as Munich because many parts of the "Ruhrpott" were destroyed in the second World War but they are definitely worth visiting.

      The fact is that the Bavarians feel like an independent state and want to be one. Everyone in germany knows.

      The Bavarians themselves maybe yes, but not the Swabians not the Franconians in the State of Bavaria.

    actually you really can't call it 'German culture'. there is such a big difference between the culture of Bayern and the territory of former preußen - Bayern hence has definitely more similarities to Austria than to the rest of Germany.

    The berries look great! But next time take a closer look....they look like some farmer brought them right? I've been finding they are from Spain or elsewhere. Same berries you buy in the grocery store. Never seen actual berries that a farmer grew in his garden....not yet anyways.

      As a side note, they still are delicious! Just looks deceiving to me.

      Audra Heun If it's the right time, you can get plenty of German rasp- and blueberries on the markets. But even if they are imported, they often taste better than from supermarkets, since on farmer markets they usually check the quality before they buy stuff. Supermarkets on the other hand only make sure the fruits are good looking. Good taste is not particularly important to them.
