It seems like such a shame that these cars that they worked so hard to produce will most likely never see the track, but if I had one, I don't think I could run it either. It's a work of art. It's special that your son got you this and seems fitting given that it was a father and son that made it. Congratulations David and thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
I totally agree. These, indeed any RC was made to be driven. I try to drive everything I own, so I can honestly say I only have three shelf queens - cars that were built and never driven. Everything else gets used, though as my collection has grown the frequency of use has declined. This MX-4 is very special for so many reasons, so I don't think I could ever bring myself to run it. But never say never...
It’s clear just how much you appreciate this car David and for that you deserve to be one of the lucky few - your love for the hobby comes through in every video you make brother congrats and thanks you 👍
Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to watch and comment. I am very fortunate to have gotten one. The RC hobby has been a life-long passion of mine and I'm lucky to have such an understanding family! 😊
Well your son just won the son of the year award for sure! LOL! What an incredible piece of RC history and I could never take it out and run it around. If it were a a Tamiya or Kyosho "limited edition" car then sure. It would be limited to thousands to tens of thousands of them. This one is exceptionally rare, hand built by the master himself and only 100 ever to be made. I would end up storing it in a safe!!! Of course it is yours so by all means, it is yours to do whatever with it. I am sure no matter what it is not going to be a decision made right away and just a thing of beauty to look at over and over again!
Hi Addam, sorry for the delay in replying. I somehow missed your comment. 😅 I always try to run everything I build, even if it just lightly or once. But this is too special (for many reasons) to run. Perhaps in the future I may change my mind (never say never). But for now, I'm content to just admire it on the shelf...Well, at the moment it's back in the box. 😁
Wow you are so lucky and your son is so kind and thoughtful. What an amazing buggy and way ahead of its time. It would have been so fast if they made it to the worlds. Thanks for sharing your unboxing. 👍🏼💯🇦🇺
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I am indeed very lucky to have one! I have no doubts the MX-4 would have done very well if it raced in the 2001 Championship. 👍
It's absolutely beautiful, David. Some years ago, I would have bought it immediately. Still I would have preferred to have the choice of building, knowing that the engineering was anyway close to perfect. I would totally understand that you do not run this car. Kudos to your son, that's an incredible gift and thank you for showing it to us 👏🤝
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I also prefer to build kits myself, but this is an exception. For me, the fact that the MX4 was built by the Hirosakas adds a great deal to its value. ☺️
Thank you for this video. Such a beautiful buggy, especially with the backstory about the creators. Also it's so nice that your son gave you this treasure! ❤
Incredible David. I’m so pleased you have one of these and I can see you will cherish and appreciate it for a long time. I couldn’t bring myself to run it… ok maybe briefly in my living room!
I feel very lucky to have one in my possession. Something I never thought possible. The history, how it was made and the people behind this machine are what make this so special. Thank you for watching and for your continued support. ☺️
What a fantastic video, you really did the car justice. Anyone can see how much the car means to you from your expression and how you talk about it! You also must have been one of the first to receive their cars, so to get a video out so quickly is a real treat, thank you. Difficult to know what to do with the car regarding driving it or not. Perhaps the answer is to have 2 cars!
Thank you for taking the time to comment. ☺️ Being in Japan, relatively close to where they were built, meant I received mine quite quickly. Fortunately it arrived on a Saturday, so I had the time to record, edit and upload the video on the same day. Several other Japanese buyers have received theirs too. Some of whom have installed electronics and are preparing to run them! Funny you should mention having two. Even if I could afford it, I don't think I could buy two. Personally, it wouldn't feel right to take two of such a limited number and deprive another fan of the pleasure of owning one...
That’s a very valid point regarding having two cars. I can’t imagine it would’ve been that easy to get two anyway, even if you had the means to do so. I keep searching for ‘MX-4 Forever’ on RUclips looking for new videos now they’re out in the wild. There is now a short video going around of someone driving one.
There are some short videos of it running on various tracks. I also have some footage of it doing a few laps at the GFCC on the day it was first announced.
A beautiful car. The story of a car that could not drive the event it was made for should not wrap up with a bunch of cars on shelves. Don't abuse it, but let it be one of the few that got a chance. It will still look just as good when you put it back, and you will have given a bird its wings back. Whatever you choose, thanks for the video of it.
glad for you, I just asked myself which one I would like to have instead of this and my easy answer is the world champion car I admired in my rc magazines for years :-)
It's such a beautiful car and I can understand why people wouldn't run them but surely it deserves some laps on a track, it's what it was designed for after all.
I've had a lot of time to decide whether to run it or not. But no closer to making my mind up! I'm not one for shell queens and firmly believe that RC's were made to be run. But this one is different...
There’s something to be said about raising a son who gives his father presents - of the kind that the parent couldn’t (comfortably) afford. And it’s not like your son can be that old since you’re barely middle-aged yourself. He has found success in life at a young age. The car looks phenomenal from an engineering standpoint, and it has an interesting history.
Such a wonderfull looking buggy, a good friend of mine is getting one, so i’ll be having a really good look at one soon. And another will be hitting the tracks, yes thats right. He’s going to run it. And hopefully i will be there to see it on track for the 1st time. Great presentation on this video 👌
That's great! I got to see Masami drive the prototype at Tsukuba on the day it was first announced and it was quite something.! He didn't hold back at all. 😲 If I did run mine, ( a big IF) I don't think I'd be brave enough to venture onto a dirt track, so getting to see one putting down some laps is going to be fantastic! You'll definitely want to get some footage of that. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! 😊
Wow! Absolutely stunning buggy and such an incredible history behind it too. Maybe save it for a special occasion like running it with Masami himself? Thanks for sharing!
Perhaps one day the MX-4's will re-unite for a run with the Legend himself. It will be interesting to see what machine Masami chooses to run at next year's GFCC. 😊

Im super happy for you. Thats how to do limited addition. In a way its like buying a Ferrari of the rc world. I think most will say dont drive it and they are probably right. But... you can buy parts...and we know if it's left on the shelf the tyres go bad. The belts go bad. The plastic gets brittle. Unless your saving it for someone else maybe you could enjoy driving it just once. But I dont blame you for keeping it perfect. It's only perfect once.
Great video as per usual. Glad you got one of these. Appreciate your insights about the buggy (as well as all of your other buggies) and the pure racers that created it. It would be awesome to see a running video of it, but I can understand if you choose not to run it as well. That said, as Jerry Seinfeld has suggested on this topic, who are you saving the car for by not running it? Nice work!
