- The Benson All-Star Orchestra, Direction: Edgar A. Benson - Sally Of My Dreams, Fox-Trot from Motion Picture “Mother Knows Best” (Kernell) with Vocal refrain by Stanley Jacobsen, Columbia 1928 (USA)
NOTE: Edgar Archibald BENSON (1878-1946) - a St. Louis born cellist was actually a musical agent out of Chicago. He put orchestras together depending on the venue. His first dance band was The Benson Orchestra of Chicago which he founded in c.1920. Its members at different times included saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer, drummer Gene Krupa, and pianists Roy Bargy and, later, Don Bestor, who served as its musical directors. The arranger was usually Roy Bargy. The band soon became one of the most popular Chicagoan dance bands of the early 1920s, and had its base at the Marigold Gardens, which had some notoriety as a gangster hang-out. Roy Bargy left the band in 1922 and was replaced as bandleader and pianist by Don Bestor. The band continued to record successfully, with hits including one of the first recordings of "Tea for Two" in 1925. That year, Bestor left, and trumpeter Fred Hamm took over as leader. Thereafter the band continued to disintegrate, although its name continued to be used on records with the "Edgar. A. Benson" in it, until the end of the 1920s. when Benson lost effective control of the Chicago dance band business. - Видеоклипы
This performance was stunning! Solo work is outstanding, and that chime coda was mesmerising... Besides I thoroughly enjoyed the delicate vocal by Stanley Jacobsen, a singer I don't recall having heard ever before. Thank you so much for sharing!

Meeeeegaaaaa!
Columbia's electrical recording system at its peak: the brass, the reeds, the strings, the rhythm, each instrumental section sounds marvelous in its own place, plenty sounds. This could be a whiteman's recording, like competing with himself. A pleasure!
Well why was Columbia Recordings in 1926 were Pressed at 80rpm on the Blue label's wilest His Master's Voice Recordings were Pressed at 78rpm on the Black labels which were later changed to the Red label's in the 1930's
Super excellent with very good interesting photos
They had really wide running boards in 1928!
Nice, joyful fox and fine singing. Pretty fashionable girls of the period too, though the luxurious fur (at 2:20) will not go over very well nowadays . It will have to be synthetic.
I know real stuff is still used on some high-end products.
1:38 looks like Clara Bow
Was this picture a real "talkie"? In 1928? Thank you for uploading!
I read in the web, it was a part talkie with the music scores. Regards :-)
Yes it was because Talking films started in 1927 with Al Jolson and the Jazz Singer
