- On this adventure we visit the stabbing location, paw paw tree site where the McCoy boys were hung and the final resting place of Devil Anses brother..Ellison Hatfield.
The real turning point in the feud, according to most historical accounts, occurred on local election day in August 1882. Three of Randolph McCoy’s sons ended up in a violent dispute with two brothers of Devil Anse. The fight soon snowballed into violence as one of the McCoy brothers stabbed Ellison Hatfield multiple times and then shot him in the back. Authorities soon apprehended the McCoys, but the Hatfields interceded, bringing the men to Hatfield territory. After receiving word that Ellison had died, they bound the McCoys to some pawpaw bushes. Within minutes, they fired more than 50 shots, killing all three brothers.
Once we get to the top of the cemetery we lost some footage Leo did, so we had to upload some footage we already had of the graves.
Another great video. Love to see the beautiful mountains . Our ancestors sure picked a beautiful place to live.
Leo and Heather yall do such a great job presenting thes videos
It's great to see folks so interested in this type of community history. Your excitement is contagious and makes me excited to see it too!
thank you so much!
Wish you had gone down the steps and showed the writing on the steps. I love going through cemeteries and reading the headstones! I have enjoyed the Hatfields and McCoys stories.
I’m a huge history nerd!!!!! Especially on the feud!! I’ve watched, read and looked at everything I could find!! I stopped at the Hatfield cemetery back in 2017 on my way home from Florida. I drove right past it at first but couldn’t believe they are still using the cemetery. The latest grave I saw was 2013 but there was a newer one with green turf carpet still on the ground!! It’s just intriguing to be in a historical location!!!🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hey Edward, I don't think anyone real recently had been buried, but yea that's pretty wild. I'm going back soon to clean it up and open up more hidden graves, thanks for watching!
❤❤❤
My sister in laws, mom ( Bessie) was Anse Hatfield's 2nd or 3rd cousin, she's told us some very interesting stories that her mom told her. I'll forward this to her, she'll enjoy it. This was very interesting, thanks for sharing.
Great ty!
My family is from western NC. I live in upstate SC. Love this type of history. Glad I somehow found your channel.
Just subscribed!! You don't know his long I've been waiting to find a really good channel that is totally dedicated to the real history of the Hatfield's and McCoy's!! Im so excited to binge watch every video! Thank you for all you do to make such an awesome channel!
Thank you so much 🙏
My family immigrated from Germany in 1956. Just married, I worked in the German Department / University of Michigan and there was a maintenance man named McCoy. I don't remember his first name. I asked him if he was related to the Hatfield's and McCoys and he said yes. We didn't discuss the event, but he was a very gently and kind man. He had the WV dialect when he spoke. It's very interesting to watch the video of some of the people involved. Thank you for your post.
Thank you for the comment 🙂
They may have all been very nice folks. They just couldn’t stand each other’s families.
I had to leave home in 1995 to find work. Im so thankful I found your channel. Thank you so much. I was raised up at Lando Mines just outside of Delbarton.
My Great GrandMother was Theodosia Runyon, Good Luck in Your endeavors Jason
Love your videos! My family is from that area.
Thank you for this type of stuff! I'm not able to travel much anylonger and this type of stuff is so great!
That bridge going to the Ellison Hatfield cemetary is solid. Buried a friend there in December and the entire procession crossed the bridge
Nice video, beautiful mountains, thanks for info on the Hatfields and McCoys, heard of them but didn’t know much of the story. Looking forward to more videos
Thank You for the tour of my son's families cemetery, his Mamaws name was Norma Hatfield Justice Devil Ans would visit her father Moss Hatfield.
Not sure if it is the same Moss, but Devil Anses son Johnses, has a son named Moss. Hes buried in the Hatfield cemetery in another video.
Very cool. I've had a fascination with this feud. Thanks for Sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
IMO, it seems the financial jealousy Randal had toward Devil Anse was passed down to his sons. Another great video!
Curious about jealousy angle. That's a common human affliction that has created turmoil since humans have existed.
What leads you to see it in that fued?
Thank you again for doing this trip I'll never get to go down there not at my age but you pointed to the first coal Camp there as you were leaving matewan ya had to cross over tracks and come up the back side.3 great aunt's and uncle's each had a home in that coal camp. Bless you folks
Thank you so much!
Continue to enjoy your videos. It’s quite interesting to learn Anse’s father died just a year before Ellison was killed and the feud was escalated. And his mother survived until 1895. I wonder how much influence they had on what happened and what direction the family went during those crucial years.
Very good question
I am new to your channel and you are really good at teaching us about these stories thanks
Thank you 🙂 and welcome
Awesome 😎 video.Just found your channel.Yall doin great job with this history.
Thank you so much 💞
I am so enjoying your channel and history. These last resting places are in such remote locations- do you know why these particular places were chosen? It doesn’t seem like the families lived close to the areas so, just wondered why they would pick remote- even for back then and hard to reach places for burials?
Some of them owned huge areas, with not that many open level places. So now they are old family cemeteries, out in the woods.
I love hearing of the stories what happened between the Hatfields and McCoys.
Love history. I'm from Franklin Tennessee. Great civil war history here. Y'all need to come visit and do some videos
We plan to actually, we have family there as well, but besides that, lots of history
You mentioned that you give tours of Hatfield and McCoy sites. How does one get in touch with you to arrange a tour. My family lives in Southeastern Ohio. Athens. Right across the border from Parkersburg WVA. Love your videos but would love to see them in person.
I thought I sent you this link when you made this post, Im sorry about thatfacebook.com/WestVirginiaAdventure
What a beautiful place, tks for sharing
Very interesting, I just learned that my husband is related to the Hatfield's, his mother's sister married a Hatfield and I am interested if his great aunts husband is related? His name was Carl Hatfield and had a brother name was Noah Hatfield. I am so thankful that I found your channel.
Thank you! we traced ours on ancestry, got a trial for 2 weeks and linked the family line to the Hatfield's and McCoy's in about a week. Was super interesting and surprising at how closely related Leo is.
Im related to "Cottontop" Hatfield. So sad what happened to him.
Very neat! That your relatives that is
Love your channel. I hated history and math in school. Now that I’m older I can’t learn enough. But I still dislike math. My calculator is my friend. Thanks for your hard work. And climbing mountains for us.
Thank you! I'm the same way.
I know time constraints are sometimes a problem when videoing, but you would not be amiss if you spent a little more time at the information marker descriptions giving us all the details you possibly can.. Love your videos.
I will keep that in mind and thank you!
Pause button on your end...maybe!!!! It's not hollywood. If you need a lesson, how to tap the button....read...then move along, I'm sure a 3rd grader can help.
@@russellgover8899 I wasn't talking to you stupid. How's that. Can I make it any plainer for you to understand ?
me and my wife are from west virginia born and raised we love it here as well
At 7:40 you said Ellison was 46 years old, but on his headstone at time 17:04 it says he was born 1841 and died 1882. Besides that, great information.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Yeah I lived in that area for along time . I got to know lots of people, good people. Loved the beautiful country.
Someone has been trying to keep that Cemetery cleaned up, unlike the one where Harman McCoy is buried.
Yes they do good. I noticed your a McCoy!.
@@thehillbillyfiles Ya, all my life.
Please stay healthy so you both can keep doing this 🙏
Great educational video friends.
Excellent job!!!
Glad you liked it!
Hi, greetings from the pink house!!!!! Not really, I just want to give you a laugh. I wish I did live there so I could go with you guys exploring. I love history and the peaceful, beautiful cemetaries. You do a great job telling these stories. I'm a new subscriber, looking forward to watching whatever you come up with. I live on the west coast and enjoy seeing your part of the country. See you in the next video.
Haha 😂 that shocked me a minute 🤣 thank you so much and I'm happy you enjoy the videos. We have lots more to come!
I enjoy ur story. Keep up the work
Thank you!
I have read all the books about the feud. Thank you for bringing it back to me. I’m definitely going to make a trip up there soon. What is your website for the ATV tours?
Thank you 🙏 we are on Facebook under trail 10 tours
He said "...and there's the Matelin Massacre site." 1921may ??
A lot of History ... one small town ..
EDIT - you are a good tour guide !!
West Virginia is beautiful country!
"I got snacks!" "I love snacks!!" LOL! I agree! I love snacks too!!!
😂😂
Tks from 🇨🇦
the photo on bottom left looks like "Brurhy Bill" or even Bob Weir !!! i liked your video and thanks for your effort..
I lived in Matewan and Red Jacket. I walked up to his grave site 20 yrs ago.
I worked in a call room doing surveys ( not for profit- just for information) they were the nicest people I ever talked to!
love your vids my favorite im one who hates commercials dont mind a couple but clicked on today it was one after another 2 per one vid just wondered what happened and why all of a sudden sorry to complain but it wasnt like that any other day oh well its the dollar be well and safe keep em coming
We haven't done anything with the ads, I have no idea. You can actually set it to have a ad every 5 mins, we have it in the least ad setting there is. I think RUclips does what it wants
I'm always interested in the Highfield stories my dad told me years ago they misspelled highfield's name it's supposed to be Hatfield and I thought that was interesting
That tree at ellison gravesite you see them alot at graveyards the myth is souls go thru to heaven
They say you see Ellison standing here at times
A rough climb with coffins? What about a climb with granite toumbstones?
Very interesting video
Thank you!
I just toured all these places at the end of December being from Washington state I'm already planning a return trip to see more
Always more to see it seems =)
Great story.
Thank you Robert ☺️
Thanks
I am with Leo, I do not believe that bridge is conducive to the well being
of a 2005 Nissan sentra. ( Which is what I drive.) Beautiful country, beautiful cemetery. It is well laid out, or so I think. Who is Floyd and Sarah,
who are buried beside Ellison? May
all interred there, rest in peace. Great video, thank you very much.
His parents are buried next to Ellison. I'm not sure which Floyd and Sarah it is. We plan to do a cemetery visit and pull death certificates soon
@@thehillbillyfiles Thank you very much for getting back to me. It is the Floyd and Sarah Staten who share the same headstone with Ellison. Please be
mindful, that I have Glaucoma, my eyes are not what they used to be.
I am pretty much blind in my right eye, so I may have misread the headstone. If I did, please excuse me.
my grandfather was a Hatfield from west vigina and he all ways said he was kin to the Hatfields I would love to know where he came in line at he was a good man
You should look it up on ancestry, you can get 2 weeks free sometimes, its worth finding out!
There's always a lot of kids in Highfield family
the whole thing was an absolute shame! what if they said he owed 4 dollars instead of 2, what if he would have said ok, i will pay you the 4 dollars brother if you say i owe it. God's word says, A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. all the killings and misery were for nothing!
A nice quick review of several prominent locations, thank you. And the pretty lady operating the camera should be on the opposite end of it. Of course this sounds a bit flirty, it is not meant to be. Sometimes, having an intelligent and attractive individual, whether male or female, speaking to you directly through the camera is more appealing … just a fact. Consider using the Mr. to record the Mrs. while she goes over this info. Again. Nice video and thanks for sharing.
Thank you! And it's a good idea, appreciate your time and thoughts
I need some information on taking a sxs tour with you I live in tazwell co va and love sxs riding please let me get info on a tour I would love to do one
shoot us a PM on trail 10 tours
My great great aunt was married to Sam Big Sam Squirrel Mccoy (America Goff) Their son Sam Jr and his 3 children George Dora and Abraham are all buried in my family cemetery in Raccoon Kentucky. Big Sam is buried about 2 miles down the road.
We are considering doing a video on him! Cool info ty
@@thehillbillyfiles if I can be any help just let me know I can take you to my family cemetery on our property it's on the mountain just like the others you go to. Noone even knows it's up there besides the McCoy's still in Raccoon and the Goffs.
@@jayblake1576 That would be amazing! we will be in touch soon, maybe a good one for winter when weeds are down =) where can I reach you? on this message?
I have a Hatfield’s in my ancestry Thomas Hatfield on my mothers side born 1710 no death date. He had one daughter in 1730 with Mrs Hatfield no first name. They were my 6x great grandparents.
very cool!
Do they have tourist shops for visitors? Very interesting story.
The town of Matewan is a few minutes away, they have lots of shops and tourist type things =)
I've heard yrs ago that the generation of today and ours was asked did they know what the battle was over and they said they had no clue
A lot of bloodshed between highfields and McCorys
I was born a HATFIELD BUT MY PEOPLE WERE FROM OHIO TO KANSAS IN THE 1800 TO THE PRESENT DAY
They drove wagon up the trail with the coffin. It's the Women's maiden names you need. It's not only Hatfield's/McCoys
Smile happy hunting my friends, check out the local Indian Tribes.
I wish you would have shown all the Hatfields tombstones.
We did more than one video on the cemetery
@@thehillbillyfiles I was talking about this one video. Your wife said there was a lot of Hatfields buried there. I would have liked to seen them all.
How olf weretalbot pharmer and radolph from the paw paw incident. Cant find. I know their cemetery id forbiddem nut still curious
My grandmother is a mccoy her father is james mccoy born 1891 don't no if he was a dependent of randall or not
Yep I probably still up there if I wouldn't mess with that crazy moonshine wouldn't up there long though hell can't even remember how to get back to the place where I was staying in the cabin go figure been through hell since then
It's Harwoods computer correction flipped the name to Hardwoods.
How do I find out if I'm related to the McCoys
I used a trial on ancestry.com and looked it up, where do you live?
I'm a Hatfield all so
What is a paw paw tree? Never heard of that tree and I grew up in Pennsylvania.
Its hard to explain, would be best to do a google search on it
Its a fruit tree, mostly grows close to water. The fruit look like long pars. Taste to me like a banana and cantaloupe. Iv !ade paw paw bread. Just like banana bread just use paw paws.
@@deboraadkins-smith2092 Thank you. That's interesting and surprised I never heard of it. I grew up playing in the woods and knew what I could eat and what I couldnt.
My husband is a direct descendant of Asa McCoy!
My grandma was a MCcoy
Trail 10 tours I think is the business I will be getting in touch
I'm related to the Hatfield and McCoys
Well hello cousin from the Hatfield side
Hello!
My great great great great grandfather is Asa Harmon MCcoy Jim Vance was shot in a holler in RedJacket grapevine is the holler I believe
Pretty interesting! Leo is related to Asa as well, we did a video on him yesterday

@@thehillbillyfiles and someone else made fun of a painting
I would really like to talk to you I have a fiddle that has a very old piece of paper in it that is dated 1906 from gov hg Hatfield presenting the fiddle to a Jesse Hatfield
Nancy Vance was kin to my mother Bonnie M. Vance Rhyneer and her family
Jerry Hatfield was married to my great great Aunt Mary Fields.
Take some lights out there and decorate it up lighter up at Christmas
Pike county tourism runs it, they should do that!
You should do some ghost hunting while you do this because I think it would be another tool to use to get honest answers for us all.
😆😆😆 Pepto-Bismol that's a good one
Can only Hatfields be buried there?
I need to ride my motorcycle down to there 😊
Most are, but some are in-laws or close friends of the family.
Since you are related to both. Do you ever find yourself fighting yourself? Just joking
Myself and I usually get along... as long as I don't piss me off!! LOL
I think us subscribers should pitch in and gift you a better pixel camera.
We have a new go pro 11, this is a older video, but it was still done on a 1000$ phone so what can I say lol. We are far from affording a professional camera, but I don't hear many complaints actually.
That's not a true statement. Not everyone in Pike County says they are related to either side. At least i know none of family makes them clams.
I wouldn't take it too serious
I always wished I was a hillbilly
Me tooo!! I'm a direct descendant
What Confederate unit were Hatfield's and Macoy's . Also any battles.
I believe it was 36 D infantry Virginia. They were in battles I'd have to.look them.up
So many questions. But I'll ask 1 What's a holler? I like 2 see the country side
A holler is basically a hollow, It’s a small valley in between two mountains.
@@thehillbillyfiles thanks it seems like their's a lot of them
@@blindmansentertainment7735 Yes. Believe it or not, different hollers can actually have different accents. They are all still a hillbilly accent, just different...
