    Many people took up cycling during the covid lockdown when exercising was still allowed. That's why there is an explosion of folding bikes now. 12 years ago, when I got my first folding bike, they were not popular, and choices were very limited. And with the PCN being built and expending, it has made exploring the island a breeze as so many places are connected now.

    Hi guys, hope you are enjoying your stay here. Just a thing about the cycling culture here. Our paths are really mostly shared paths even though there are dividing lines and stuff. It will be quite common to see pedestrians walking on cycling paths and cyclists riding on walking paths etc. I don't think you need to ring the bell or use the horn or anything. Most cyclists here will slow down and navigate past pedestrians even if they are walking on the cycling path. Nobody likes a beep on the road or on the path. Right?

    • @TwoWheelCruise

      @leewn2319 Год назад +1

      Footpaths are meant for pedestrians only and not for bicycles which are vehicles. But locals are tolerant to share footpaths with cyclists. It’s best for cyclists to dismount and push your bicycle while on crowded footpath. It is good practice to alert pedestrian ahead of you to ring your bells or announce “sorry, excuse me”

    Haha I can see that Cruise is still super excited and high on adrenaline after posting this video, how do I know that? He replied to at least 90% of the comments below 🤣🤣🤣
    Just want to introduce a little about SG's unique housing model. 80% of its residents live in public housing (aka HDB flats). When you hear public housing, many people would imagine them to be small, dark and dingy, on the contrary, these are really well designed housing with manicured gardens and shared leisure space. There are shops, supermarkets, schools and sports amenities in the neighbourhood to provide convenience to the residents.
    The SG gov started the public housing scheme in 1960s, the goal was to house as many people as possible and making them affordable. The flats have 99 year land lease, and technically the gov own the flats. But the gov started a Home Ownership Scheme where they allow residents here to "buy" the flats at heavily subsidised rates and owners are allowed to "sell" the flats in an open market to get capital gain. But the gov is still the eventual owner, it paints the buildings every 7 years, it decides which blocks are to be torn down and manages the cleaning of common areas. The owners don't collectively make those decisions, unlike in private housing where a residents' committee will be formed or a management company will be appointed to handle these matters.
    Compared to many cities in the world and its long time rival Hong Kong, SG's housing policies have proved to be on many levels above. Unfortunately, things have gone a bit wrong (or to many people, VERY wrong) in recent years. More and more large HDB flats are selling about 2 to 3 times its original subsidised prices to above SGD$1 million. Even smaller ones have seen prices rocketing, many people can't afford them. And if they want to buy directly from the gov, the wait is long because of construction disruptions and a surge in demand. Public housing has become more difficult to afford, further and further away from the gov's initial goal.
    The gov has reiterated countless times that they are monitoring the situation closely and will take action when necessary to cool down prices. We'll see.

      I still try to respond to most every comment when I can, especially within the first day of a new video.

    While there is a pretty robust park connector network across the island overall, cycling around the older neighbourhoods is still not very conducive. The government only really started to build these cycling paths quite recently in the last 5-10 years so there's still quite a lot of the old pavements that are kinda narrow (which makes it quite annoying to cycle across when there are many pedestrians about) and many of the older neighbourhoods currently have very limited cycling paths/wide pavements. Also some of the pavements are basically impossible to widen due to various infrastructure/old trees that have already been built around them as the government did not originally plan for cycling paths back then. But if you go to many of the newer neighbourhood towns, there are many nice wide pavements built with cyclists in mind. However, they have been widening and renovating many of the old pavements over time so I am optimistic that it will be even nicer to cycle around the country in another 5-10 years time.

      Sound like a typical Singaporean who complains alot. I used to ride escooter, electric unicycle, mountain bikes and road bikes.
      I love our PCNs. It isn’t possible to make wide tracks every place that u want. You have to accept that for some places, we have to stick with the old pavements.
      How then? Just adjust your thinking and go slow and share the path with pedestrians.
      What’s the point of complaining or nitpicking about such small stuff?

    • @Hidd3NN1N
      @Hidd3NN1N Год назад +1

      @@foodmore uh, what? You seem to be the only one complaining 'a lot' it seems. I praised the pcn network right on my first line and said I was optimistic about how much more it can improve with time and made one minor complaint as the pcn network definitely still has issues. Unless you are somehow insinuating the pcn network is currently perfect as it is and no longer needs any improvements?

Some nice parks to consider riding too...Bishan Park, Punggol Waterways, East Coast - there are park connectors and cycling path where road bikes usually go fast. I think it should not be difficult if you have a proper job and visa sponsor, but I don't think they have many options for freelancers who aren't married to a local.

    Some of the things I like are… Everything looks very clean and well maintained. The street signs are like those in the U.S. and mostly in English (thus making the learning curve easier). The traffic looks orderly. The bikes seem perfectly suitable for the riding that you did. For casual and exploration purposes. Always nice to have convenient storage too. On another note, the saddle that Thuong was riding looks more conforming than yours. How was it?

    • @TwoWheelCruise

      Yeah, all of that was great! Her saddle is more comfy than mine for sure, but I don’t mind more firm saddles

      It's worth a trip! It's very similar to cycling in Japanese cities, though with more/wider cycling paths, but without the hills/mountains. Haven't been to the Philippines yet, but I imagine it's similar to Vietnam roads.

    I've been riding this bike for about a month ruclips.net/user/postUgkxwC0IIeIomGQVeBWg-kKJaToZkLEFIA2W and a half now and I think it's fantastic. It helps me get to work on time every day since I'm able to fit it inside of public transportation rush hour. The price is great too, people are always shocked when they ask me how much I paid for the fold up and I tell them "200". It's easy to fold and installation when it ships is insanely easy. All you have to install when the bike arrives is one foot pedal, everything else is done for you. I do recommend you carry some sort of wrench to tighten any loose screws on the handle bar and seat whenever they get a little bit loose. Other than that I think it's a fantastic bike. Easily fits in the home, can fit inside a car trunk and can even fit in subway rush hour.

    I love the commentary so much. What do you mean by it's illegal to use the horn in Japan though?

      @TwoWheelCruise  Год назад

      Check out our cycling laws in Japan video, I go into more detail there. The trispoke wheels are carbon, so lighter and faster and cooler looking.
