I discovered the House of Love at the Vinyl Fever record shop in my hometown of Tallahassee, FL as a 10th grader in 1988 and immediately fell in love with their music, eventually acquiring all the recordings, seeing them live in Atlanta, GA (@ The Roxy and The Masquerade) and even getting their songlist (which I swiped from the stage) signed by the band. In that frenetic, heady moment, I remember I asked Guy to write "They only hate you for what you wear" a lyric from Real Animal, instead he wrote "I ONLY hate you" which was perfect. Now, these 30 years on, their music remains not only primordially brilliant from every possible vantage, but ever-inscribed on my neurons, literally the soundtrack of my life, growing in meaning and depth for me as I age. All I can express is my gratitude and awe and joy - that Guy and Terry have mended their relationship (unlike so many other beloved bands) and are continuing their magical collaboration. Seeing the performance of "Touch Me" at the end of this video evoked chills and tears and a yearning to sit in a dark room and listen to the entire catalog at high volume. Love. This. Band. Forever.

To find this obscure FANTASTIC band in the USA in 1988 is impressive. Way cool. And your description of your relationship with their music is great too. Kudos. I am sure you have the multi cd box set of the first album. Anyone who reads this....sell your house and buy it....no it is still cheap right now so grab it. When I first heard this band I was like...I have been looking for this sound for my whole life and never heard it before.

This band carried through all points of my life (my Dad's death, "runaway" time in Spain, meeting my wife, getting my first "real" job). Here is a soundtrack I am proud of - my sisters were always my harshest musical critics and The House of Love gave me 'street cred' and allowed me to spread my wings and to meet new, cool, like-minded people at the time. Thanks to Guy , Terry, Pete, Chris and everybody - you marked my life!

I remember when my brother got a car with tape player installed, sometime around 1999-2000, and we went through our old tapes and found the "Butterfly"... We put it on and sang together each song from the beginning to the end, knowing every word, although we hadn't listened to it for at least 7 years, since he moved away...

Such an amazing and great great band. The Guy Chadwick's combo supose the bridge between early 80s Post-Punk, specially in its neo-psychedelic sides (Soft Boys, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs, The Teardrop Explodes, The Church, The Chameleons, Sad Lovers & Giants) and the emerging Shoegaze Noisy-Pop moviment at the last 80s. Jesus & Mary Chain laid the foundation. The Velvet Underground influence was the common feature. The 6T or psychedelic pop feeling was the Guy Chadwick's touch

What really moves me in this documentary is the camaradery between Guy Chadwick and Terry Bickers. To think that at the end of the eighties, both of them could hardly stand being together, fulled by the massive use of drugs, alcohol and psychological problems. I'm glad they managed to understand each other and be friends again.

The contrast between the loveable, humble Terry now and the embittered, angry defector/leader of Levitation is a remarkable one- but is a wonderful example too of the healing power of time and reflection. Put this interview next to the rather more tense Anderson/Butler reminiscences of the early days of Suede to see what perspective and maturity can do for a relationship..

I just bought the five CD box set of the first album. I was listening to the Creation Records box set streaming and I heard House of Love for the first time. I was intrigued by what I heard put them in the search box. Up popped the box set and I sat there and listened to almost all five CDS in one sitting. I was amazed I had never heard of them. I was hooked enough to immediately want the box set. Such a great combination of shimmering guitars and melody. I thought of the Velvets and early Pink Floyd. They just had the perfect mix of things. Wow. Love this video by the beautiful sea and the crashing waves. Thank you House of Love and Cherry Red.

I bought their 1st album after hearing & recording their BBC Studio Session of Love In A Car , Blind & Safe but the album versions seemed Tinny - especially Love in a Car of which the BBC Version grew into a sonic Shoegaze soundscape of 6 or 7 minutes whereas the album cut was pedestrian in comparison. The BBC version of Blind was better for the opposite reason . It was very stripped down and I couldn’t decide whether the percussion was on a kit or a pushbike back wheel being rotated which gave the song added dimension. I still loved the album inspite of my complaints ! Thanks to those concerned with bringing the guys together for this interview Thanks House of Love for their work ❤ from nr Bournemouth

Man, one of the few things that I have stolen on my life, was the butterfly album. Some friend, who I don't see anymore, but not because of the issue, showed me the cd in 1992 and on the next year, when we were graduating from high school, I borrowed it from him to never return it again. Good luck trying to find three masterpieces of rock ("Hedonist", "I Don't Know Why I Love You", "Never" ) in a crescendo row like in that album. All killers, no fillers in all the record. I heard "Christine" and "Touch me" today, needless to say my reaction.

Their marketing people sucked, obviously cause they are extremely talented and were one of the best 90's alternative bands. I barely caught them on a whim from a alt. music show on A.M. radio while I drove lumber trucks. Some morning show had a recorded show with a bunch of bands in this genre. The WARP circa 1992 is where I heard them. If not for this prerecorded show on before Rush Limblow in the mornings, same boat, I in my 50's now as well would be telling your tale. Haha Better late than...

Enjoyed that. It was the album that I played daily through my teenage years, influenced me to pick up a guitar and buy a Boss CE-2 pedal as well! The album is timeless, still sounds great. As does the German Import before it. The band should have gone on to greater things imo but trends were changing at the time. A bit like the band The Chameleons I think The House of Love should have had more success.

I heard the song Marble in 1990 or 1991 and it stuck in my head , though I didn't know the name of the band was House of Love until 4 years ago. I thought "Christine" was Jesus and Mary Chain, LOL!

I did live interviews with THOL and later Terry Bickers (in L.A. and in London) when he had Levitation (for American publications). I've been trying to track down Terry ever since. Anyone interested in the transcripts?

Yes, seems like Terry's mic is sometimes turned off by mistake, and they have to use the sound from one of the cameras. Still a great doctumentary. Funny that they don't mention the (rumours about) drugs and drinking.

People sometimes forget how influencial The velvet underground was to punk, post punk gothic and indie / shoe gaze.
