Wholeheartedly agree. Glad to see some media peel away from it, but seeing more long-form couples and also just a diminishing level of forced get-together is nice. Even without being Ace, really annoys me when a romance is forced in the final act or such
One very minor point in all this that I also appreciate: Sam survives that situation at the end not because Nate becomes mega strong through the power of plot and lifts the beam he couldn't previously lift, he goes "wait, we're on a boat. Knowing these guys and their paranoia, these cannons are probably all loaded. It'd be easy enough to use one to flood this room and float the beam off him." It's a solution that relies on Nathan not only being smart, but understanding the history involved here - in short, it's a solution that relies on Nathan Drake being *Nathan Drake.*
That's a fantastic bit of writing, people say that you should make your protagonists the only ones for the job and I think this is a good example of why
As Red and Blue point out at the end here, I love that the happily ever after to this game is not "we should live a stereotypical suburban life, because mundane normality is the ideal, and who wants to do the adventuring thing anyways?". Instead, Nate and Elena learn to communicate better and be honest with themselves and each other, and in the process of doing so, settle on a happy ending that actually feels happy and long-term sustainable for them. Man, the writing for this game is so good 🙂
Agreed. While there is nothing inherently wrong with an adventurer wanting to retire, that kind of life isnt the happy ending every one seeks, as we see Nathan Drake. While he's never been a fan of the potential death that came with his treasure hunting life style, he was genuinely excited when he found lost history and treasure, less for the monetary value and more out of true love for the adventure and discovery. Living a normal life can NEVER work, because while he's safe he isn't doing something he likes either. That's why Nate's happily ever after is simply adventuring with his loved ones in a a safer manner, because that he is at his core: a curious adventurer with a love for history.
Never played this series, but, based on this, it sounds like... If Nathan had come clean to his wife first thing, and awkwardly gotten out "So, ok, I thought my brother was dead, turns out he was stuck in jail for 15 years and he's in debt to this bad guy...but there's a pirate treasure we have a lead on. And, ok, I know I promised that we're never doing this again, but, I really need to save my brother, so I can I do this one last score." ...by the time he was halfway finished Elena would have her go bag packed and camera ready, and be in the middle of phoning her boss to tell him she's got another "Nathan Drake Searches for Lost Treasure" article in the works. Which is why *communication is important*, people.
Fair enough, but I take it as Nathan still trying to keep her separated from the world he came from. She's the journalist, but he's the treasure hunter who deals with killing people for the sake of "it's them or me because they are trying to kill me." And not just that, but all the death traps from these lost ancient cities where maybe he doesn't want to have the possibility of someone getting hurt because they are following him. This is his destructive side, and she's someone who knows little of what being that way entails. Sam, Sully, Chloie, Charlie.... they grew up living that life just like him. Elena did not so he tries to keep her separated. By the end of 4 he learns that there is a middle ground they can both share. They can go about treasure hunting the safer route but Elena can handle herself so long as they are working together. Or at least that's how I see it
Big thing tho, alcazar plotline would have been immediately fallen apart, that's actually one of the weakest parts of the writing for the gane; and it has to bend itself sideways to make it work

Ever since I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a young twenty-something (back when it was being broadcast) I have been highly skeptical of any story and storyteller who feels they *have to* kill off beloved characters to "up the stakes." One thing that also happens at the end of the elevator ride after Elena saves Nathan. The game doesnt force you off the railing. It allows you to just sit there and mull over what you as Nathan have done to Elena. It's such a good marriage of game design and story.
It happens occasionaly, particularly when I binge a series like Tales From My D&D Campaign,& then realise I have to wait like EVERYONE ELSE when I catch up.

Played this through with my wife and god that whole section in Uncharted 4 where its just Elena and Nate is so wonderful. The scene were Elena sees Drake just act out the pirates being poisioned and just seeing her smile is just... GOD ELENA AND NATE ARE BEST GAME COUPLE!
I watched this entire Detail Diatribe FROM START TO FINISH and was completely engrossed for every minute of it, despite not only never having played this particular video game, but never played any video game, ever. This is why y'all are good at what you do.
Just realized. If you ever played Endless Ocean Blue World, then that game is essentially what Nathan and Elena are doing after Uncharted 4. Perfectly Legal adventuring.
This is such a good analysis Blue - I absolutely love these games but I didn't spot half of the callbacks (cowboy, etc), and the fact that Elena playing dead was actually her special way of saying she forgave Nate is a brilliant point
I shall fortify this comment section Edit: BY THE EMPEROR! My thanks to all you defenders of mankind that bolstered the defences. I did not expect this to become my moste popular comment to date.
Don't sleep on Uncharted: Golden Abyss. It didn't have Elena, but the de facto love interest, Chase, not only is referenced in Uncharted 4's attic, but she basically represents Nate's love of archaeology and loyalty to the people he loves in contrast to Dante being arguably the best villain in the series and a way better evil Nate, representing his love of treasure hunting and willingness to deal with unsavory characters in that pursuit, than Rafe or the guy from Uncharted 2. Not to mention that Uncharted 4 puts a new perspective on what Nate was saying about Panamanian prisons in this game, especially when the secondary villain might have been in power when Sam was locked up. Plus, SPOILERS since the treasure actually *was* lethally radioactive, "This is not a place of honor" really fits.
My fav thing in that argument in Uncharted 4 was when Elena asked Nate if there was a Malaysian job and she doesn't get an answer, she's playing with her wedding finger. Considering all the grief he has given her, that was such a small gesture that could've blown up, but perfectly showed what's on her mind.
"Long lost brother that established character never mentioned because they're traumatised over why they're Long Lost" is a rare trope, so its strange that it happened twice in the PS3/4 era of (mostly) Sony exclusive franchises.
I am a simple woman. I see Uncharted, I click. I see OSP and Uncharted, I run to click. Insomnia watch add/edit: The things that I love about Nate and Elena on Pirate Island: 1.) Elena is wearing an updated version of her outfit from the first game. Which I think adds to the pirate table scene. They're on an island jungle, trying to save Nate's loved one, piecing together what the hell happened, and falling in (or, in Uncharted 4's case, rediscovering) love with one another. 2.) Elena playing dead is definitely her fucking with Nate for funnies. But please imagine Nate having the worst flashbacks to the end of Uncharted 2 where he almost lost her to an explosive.
That's what happens to Brothers and Sisters. You've just gotta say, " We've had some good times and I havva lotta good memories if those days. Everytime I think what we've been through it amazes me that we're still alive ! But, here we are, pushiin' 60. We can still talk for 40 mins. And it feels like 5 secs. Loves, to all.
I noticed that in the scene were Elena confronts Nate in 4 she's fidgeting with her ring like she's about to rip it off and possibly toss at him. God I love shit like that!
Thank you, OSP! I found y'all just before the pandemic hit. And I've been a fan ever since. I graduated from University last week and you have no idea how much this channel has given me to truly enjoy and understand my education. This will probably get buryied in the comments section but I wanted to say thank you from the bottum of my heart! The journey isnt over but that doesn't mean it has to suck along the way.
I love that y'all can make such thoughtful yet compelling content on things you're praising instead of just things you're lampooning. It's (relatively more) easy to make fun diatribes about things one doesn't like, to trash and pick apart, hell I love watching that kind of content, but to be able to do the same with video essays _praising_ something? That takes some considerably additional skill. I still go back and rewatch the DD on the setup and payoff of SSJ in DBZ since the way y'all present and break it down it in that video is such a perfect encapsulation of the whole arc in a format that is much quicker than, well, re-watching all of DBZ through the Frieza arc (not Kai, I will die on the hill of not Kai even if it is objectively better). Just well done and congratulations all around.
I love the bit of Sam shovelling coins in his pockets while Nate is having a sword fight with the bad guy. Trapped under a heavy beam, ship burning around them, bad guy with a sword trying to kill them, and Sam just knows his little brother is going to win and save him. So by god he's going to make this whole trip worth it somehow, for the both of them. That faith in his brother even after all the lies Sam told is great.
My favorite scene in the series is the Dead Founders scene. My favorite parts of the series is Nate's love of discovering history. Above all the adventuring, it's learning that Nate enjoys most. I love Uncharted 4, Uncharted in general, and I'm happy I haven't seen Nate again. He finally got a truly happy ending and I don't want to see him go back again.
Your preview on Patreon about this video coming out was the reason why I decided to play this entire game in a few days after I just... never got around to it for years despite really liking 1-3, and I'm glad I did. But your analysis certainly made me appreciate this one, and the whole series, much more
This is such perfect timing right now, because currently, I am almost near my second play through of Uncharted 4 and I am also trying to read Treasure Island. So this video works for me.
I've heard a lot of people talking about this game as one of their absolute favourites, and I knew the basic concept of Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider - but I had no idea it was such a long running complete arc with a significant other, not just a new love interest in each game. Mad respect. This is what games can do with skilled creators and great ambition!
So there are a few thing I want to mention after watching this lovely video that were not featured first: the third game is more about Nathan and Sully's relationship, meaning all the other characters take a backseat to giving Sully as many Deathflags as possible second: I was really hoping the would put in the rope "hug trap" in around 1:09:10, I feel like that was a missed opportunity third: Sam's survival comes from Nathan putting a hole in the ship to allow water in and raise the beam holding down Sam, being this games way of having Nathan reject the treasure And if you all enjoyed what you saw of Uncharted 4, ChipCheezumLPs did a very good Lets Play of it and all the previous games.
I grew up a tomb raider kid (the originals, not the reboot) so i saw uncharted as a knock off series at first. It wasn't until uncharted 3 that i felt it was truly its own thing, but now I'm a fan of the series all the way
Y'alls commentary and discussion are so enjoyable. I have friends and family that are fans of this series and even my game-play challenged self enjoyed the games' story pretty deeply. Everything is on the table in these games and they never stop being mysterious and engaging. I appreciate how much you guys enjoy and advocate for discussion and absolutely bring forth the spirit of fhe story in your discussion. Thanks for such a nice time listening to a convo I shamelessly would have had a blast being a part of.
Not sure if y'all had ever thought about doing reactions, but knowing Blue's wonderful fixation with Uncharted, I'd love to see/hear your thoughts on the Nathan Fillion short film where he (IMO gloriously) plays Nathan Drake, complete with camera work mirroring the games.
I sincerely hope you guys do a detail diatribe on Uncharted: The Lost Legacy because a) it's my favorite and b) it actually came out the year I started my World History class and then the year afterwards was when I started Art History and just completely fell in love with it, both the subject and the game. Uncharted 4 is a close second to me because it is a very very good game, but Lost Legacy hit me at just the right time and at just the right spot. Anyways, please do more of this kind of thing, the last several detail diatribe's (actually of all them) have been amazing.
the whole uncharted 4 conflict reminds me of the dynamic (and personal arc for) fantastic mr. fox & mrs. fox from the wes anderson film! a history of thrill seeking in the past, a new domestic life that suffocates mr. fox, and the problems it causes for his marriage !!!!!
From what I’ve heard and seen about Uncharted 3’s writing is that after 2 is when Neil Druckmen took some of the team to go do The Last of Us so they were operating at half capacity likely or at the very least on a crutch It would probably at least explain Talbot and his magic powers that come from nowhere (thank you Bricky for pointing how bad it gets with him)
It's a bit more complicated, but I've seen rumors circle around how U3's development was structured. The level designers would start first with making the setpieces, then write the game around the setpieces and how we got there. From a story-perspective, the shipwreck and all the pirates is pure filler, but it exists cause "we have to justify this cool setpiece in the ocean". I don't think any of this was cofnirmed though, so take it at a first glance. The Talbot stuff to me screams "re-writes". You constantly see characters question how he's able to do what he does, I wouldn't be surprised if he was intended to be a supernatural creature in first drafts.
@@leithaziz2716 yeah it’s probably much more complicated than a single RUclips comment thread can put it into and I have seen Amy Henning and Nolan North talk about it being they did the action points first and then the writing later but I remember watching the Last of Us being made and Neil did say he went to Amy during early production of Uncharted 3 with the approval of Amy to make his own game and he took some of the team to start early work on it. With the writing team of uncharted only three people for the second game and only Amy worked on the writing for Uncharted 3 I can see why it was narratively all over the place.
@@leithaziz2716 Yeah Talbot screams dropped subplot. His weirdness get less and less the further into the game so it feels like they had a idea with him that they just cut
You know I never played Uncharted but I trust that whatever these goofey goobers are talking about is going to be good and I was right. The passion for everything is always a treat too
Uncharted 4 is by far my favorite game in the series because of how it explored drake's wanderlust and relationship with everyone else. Its more than enough to make me overlook the fact his brother is retconned into the series.
Uncharted is literally my childhood and is also what made me into a history buff Uncharted 4 is my favourite story in any video game and that ending quite literally broke me. Nothing has topped it and I cry every time I see Cassie. I want them to make a sequel to uncharted that stars Cassie in the future doing what she loves and finding lost treasures.
I'm always pleasantly surprised when games with simple, tropey stories still manage to get me all misty eyed, like Uncharted 4 and this year's Hi-fi Rush. Sincere writing can tug at the heartstrings even when it isn't something you've never seen before.
I honestly think that with modern writing's emphasis on realism and subversion and deep stories we have lost a lot. We need more stories that aren't afraid to be fun stories
There are few things more satisfying than finding something you like on first experience, examining and analyzing it further, and just finding even more things to like about it.
I LOVE UNCHARTED Currently playing through all the games with my boyfriend since he hasn’t played it. Made it through the first three and taking a break to play The Last of Us, since Uncharted 3 fell short because they were being made at the same time.
The uncharted games story was so beautifully written! I love how it’s all ties together and ends with happy ending and like Nathan still gets to do what he loves ,but legally and all. I love how we can see that Cassie (his daughter ) could possibly be into this as well too.
There is so much negativity surrounding Elena and her relationship with Nate in the Uncharted fandom. Just way too many dudebros throwing around words like ‘boring’ ‘bitch’ ‘ungrateful’ without ever giving two thoughts to context. I’m so glad that there are people in the Uncharted fandom that actually have a modicum of media awareness who recognize what a well-written character Elena actually is.
I like to watch playthroughs of games that are out of my genre/skill level if I find the premise interesting, Uncharted 4 being one of them & it continues to live in my head rent free. The concept of a pirate paradise & the underlying themes of human greed & obsession are SO compelling. Tying in the treasure hunting & uncovering ancient lost cities, & well-written characters is like striking gold. I was so excited to see this diatribe come up, & now I'm going to go watch a playthrough again.
I know next to nothing about this but, if it follows my reaction to previous OSP diatribes, I will be a die-hard fan by the end. Happy Holidays!!!🎄🎄🎄😁😁😁✨
Came here from the OSPod where blue said this video wasn't doing as well as he hoped. And I really enjoyed this! I'm gonna play the uncharted series again now
Hey guys. Great video! Two thing! 1. Blue. You are my person. You love Spider-Man. You love Uncharted. You're blue. (Not a really high bar I know, like so many people like those to things but honestly Uncharted does not get enough post series praise to me) 2. I know a lot of people give Uncharted 3 shit but I love it for two reasons. It very much sets up 4 with the kind of... philosophy of Nathan Drake. Why he is the way he is. They definitely tease it here for it to get a bigger moment in 4. And also it has my favorite quote of the entire series (you mentioned it): "You don't get to choose how you start in this life. Real greatness is what you with the hand you're dealt." Which is the long version of Sic Parvis Magna.
Genuinely the writing in Uncharted was so unexpectedly good when i firdt experienced it, especially as a whole wjen seeing everything back to back. I never expected it outside of a decent A-B-C Indiana Jones treasure hunt take with some historical flavor to make it intriguing. Its so easy to see how much the team genuinely loved and understood their story and characters with just how well everything pans out in a satisfying way 🎉
To me a piece of media, whether it be a show or movie franchise or a games series, they are alive, and people are perpetually afraid of letting go of them as you would say goodbye to a friend for a final time knowingly or seeing a family member pass on. It's not one to one but it hits the same vein to me.
I loved these games so much growing up. Still go back to all 5 once in a while. I love your takes on it! I think the thing the Uncharted movie was missing is ✨ *Elena* ✨
I had forgotten how good the Uncharted story is. Thinking back to them it’s a,ways the big set pieces that comes to mind first. But it is actually the story and the characters that is the backbone to the whole series. Uncharted 4 really does have a “perfect” ending. They really don’t need to make any more Uncharted games. Like you said, they will not make the same mistake as Indiana Jones.

One thing that also happens at the end of the elevator ride after Elena saves Nathan. The game doesnt force you off the railing. It allows you to just sit there and mull over what you as Nathan have done to Elena. It's such a good marriage of game design and story.
Do you ever take a moment, and just look around? Watch all the living people you love just doing their thing and think "How lucky am I?"

A Guinness world record book agrees with you.
Uncharted 4 is the game of my childhood, loved all 5 games

Plus,
SPOILERS
since the treasure actually *was* lethally radioactive, "This is not a place of honor" really fits.
I didn't believe a "one _ scene" crossover would happen again, I'm so excited!!!
"Long lost brother that established character never mentioned because they're traumatised over why they're Long Lost" is a rare trope, so its strange that it happened twice in the PS3/4 era of (mostly) Sony exclusive franchises.

Naughty Dog's games in general are fantastic, but U4 is probably their Magnum Opus, alongside TLOU.
Feel like TLOU gets kind of toture/drama porn. Uncharted you feel good through the entire ride.
Crash team racing tho
Tye description of "Indiana Jones but game" really is the best. One of Nate's catchphrases is "I didn't think that far ahead."

Insomnia watch add/edit:
The things that I love about Nate and Elena on Pirate Island:
1.) Elena is wearing an updated version of her outfit from the first game.
50:35 - Maybe the real poison is the friends we betrayed along the way!
Happy holidays, everyone of osp!
Journey to the West is close at hand!!!
It was the one right after this lol
Was anyone else hoping for a OSP and friends reading of a Christmas Carol like they did with Macbeth and Julius Caesar?
I've heard a lot of people talking about this game as one of their absolute favourites, and I knew the basic concept of Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider - but I had no idea it was such a long running complete arc with a significant other, not just a new love interest in each game. Mad respect. This is what games can do with skilled creators and great ambition!
So there are a few thing I want to mention after watching this lovely video that were not featured
first: the third game is more about Nathan and Sully's relationship, meaning all the other characters take a backseat to giving Sully as many Deathflags as possible
second: I was really hoping the would put in the rope "hug trap" in around 1:09:10, I feel like that was a missed opportunity
third: Sam's survival comes from Nathan putting a hole in the ship to allow water in and raise the beam holding down Sam, being this games way of having Nathan reject the treasure
And if you all enjoyed what you saw of Uncharted 4, ChipCheezumLPs did a very good Lets Play of it and all the previous games.
So happy Blue has wanted to talk about this for so long because I have wanted to listen to someone talk about this for just as long
Uncharted: a stealth moral lesson for players about the necessity to acknowledge your fuckups, apologize, and work to be better people.
I sincerely love listening to all of your Detail Diatribes, but this one is probably my favorite (so far)!
This was such a pleasure to watch. Appreciate you both taking the time for it. ^_^
I love watching these discussion videos in the background, by far my favorite podcast ever/
From what I’ve heard and seen about Uncharted 3’s writing is that after 2 is when Neil Druckmen took some of the team to go do The Last of Us so they were operating at half capacity likely or at the very least on a crutch
It would probably at least explain Talbot and his magic powers that come from nowhere (thank you Bricky for pointing how bad it gets with him)
It's a bit more complicated, but I've seen rumors circle around how U3's development was structured.
The passion for everything is always a treat too
Chloe "Is that an ancient tibetan ritual dagger in your pants?" Drake "Maybe im just happy to see you?"
Blue made me excited about the story arc of a game franchise I've never played and knew legit nothing about. Fantastic job my dude.
Uncharted 4 is by far my favorite game in the series because of how it explored drake's wanderlust and relationship with everyone else.
Its more than enough to make me overlook the fact his brother is retconned into the series.
I have to add, Chip and Ironicus' let's play of all the Uncharteds is pretty much the best out there.
Instant Favorite, thanks for reminding me how much I loved this game

Just engagin’ with the content here, Barnes.
I dont know how many times I’ve played every game in the series, it’s amazing that you guys are making a video on the franchise I love.❤
Uncharted is literally my childhood and is also what made me into a history buff
Uncharted 4 is my favourite story in any video game and that ending quite literally broke me. Nothing has topped it and I cry every time I see Cassie. I want them to make a sequel to uncharted that stars Cassie in the future doing what she loves and finding lost treasures.
Raphael from Baldurs Gate 3 - Please Detail Diatribe him.
You two are excellent. Thank you, that is all.
Glad to see another non-toxic video on Uncharted 4
I LOVE UNCHARTED
Currently playing through all the games with my boyfriend since he hasn’t played it. Made it through the first three and taking a break to play The Last of Us, since Uncharted 3 fell short because they were being made at the same time.
Saw “detail diatribe” and “uncharted” and immediately started watching, you two nailed it, it’s the perfect ending to a story
The uncharted games story was so beautifully written! I love how it’s all ties together and ends with happy ending and like Nathan still gets to do what he loves ,but legally and all. I love how we can see that Cassie (his daughter ) could possibly be into this as well too.
I played through the first four games over the course of about a month, and the end of the fourth game hit me with a bunch of emotions.
Uncharted is why I love Henley style shirts so much, I feel called out with the wardrobe comment. 😂
Uncharted is amazing. Even the ladies only spinoff..... which I wish we had more of
Thanks for the beautiful summary and discussion! Love the respect you guys have for games as an art form.
I love these games so much, and they are made even better by analyses like these. Thank you!
I guess you could say Nathan Drakes last adventure wasn't the lost pirate colony of Libertalia, but the source of denile.

I love it when stories let characters have a happy end even when the stories go on.
This is one of my favorite game series! So exciting to hear you talk about it
Hey guys. Great video! Two thing!
1. Blue. You are my person. You love Spider-Man. You love Uncharted. You're blue. (Not a really high bar I know, like so many people like those to things but honestly Uncharted does not get enough post series praise to me)
2. I know a lot of people give Uncharted 3 shit but I love it for two reasons. It very much sets up 4 with the kind of... philosophy of Nathan Drake. Why he is the way he is. They definitely tease it here for it to get a bigger moment in 4. And also it has my favorite quote of the entire series (you mentioned it):
"You don't get to choose how you start in this life. Real greatness is what you with the hand you're dealt."
Which is the long version of Sic Parvis Magna.
Dag. Nabbit. Now I have a mighty need to play through all of these again. This was such a treat to revisit!
