Thank you Internet for allowing me to listen to such a masterpiece. As Charlie Byrd rightly said: 'It's not about playing a flurry of notes; it's about each of them having a message between them', and that is clearly expressed by this gentleman with every song he plays.
Every tune this man plays is absolutely awesome. Makes me on one hand just quit playing, but on the other hand get in there and study his great stuff note by note. I have a lot of pianist that I have followed for years, but Pascal is on top of my list.
This has long been and still is my favourite arrangement (of anything) for solo piano. It’s elegant, classy, never at any point too much. Its alive and breathes with nostalgia and grandeur that I just dont hear enough in solo piano arrangements. Although I’m more or less a novice piano player I’ve been trying get myself up to a good enough standard to do this piece justice over the last two years. I made the mistake of thinking that it would have been easier than it was, (the same mistake I imagine that the vast majority of people make when picking up any instrument). There are a few sections that I knew would be challanging, but what struck me more was how difficult it was for me to get even the first few measures to sound passable. It took me a while to put my finger on what I thought was the missing piece to pulling this off. Pascal Wintz studied Jazz earlier in his life, and later decided to study classical music after the fact, and I think this has helped me understand why this piece demands more than just a Jazz aproach to playing. This piece needs to be approached as classical piece just as much as a Jazz piece. It’s staggering how carefully you need to maintain the dynamics of every note, the voicing of every chord, the expression in every phrase, to get this to sound as flawless as he can play it. All the above while maintaining that soft swing feel at such a slow tempo. There is a presence of emotion that you can hear that makes it sound like the piano Is singing its heart out. It also makes me think that this is a carefully arranged piece, as opposed to improvised as Jazz is usually played. Each phrase is perfectly implemented, and the piece as a whole takes a form that takes you on far more of a journey than your average jazz number could. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love jazz, but jazz alone could not have achieved what Pascal played in this piece. That ending couldnt have sounded any bigger and grander even if you had an orchestra at your disposal. Take all the above with a healthy pinch of salt, I am, as I said, a novice. But this is how ive been trying to understand how I should approach this. Perhaps I should have gone with Minuet in G for my first piece to learn start to finish ... I however, regret nothing, I will keep working on it for as long as it takes. Not because I have anything to proove, but because I want to carry this piece with me everywhere I go, I want to be in the same room as the piano when I hear it. I have learnt so much about this instrument through trying to tackle this one piece. I will stand by my decision to bite of more than I can chew, and encourage anyone who sees this and really wishes they could play it to do the same. All it cost me was £250 for a Casio digital piano, and £8 or so for the sheet music which is THANKFULLY available to buy online. Oh, and lots and lots of patience. It’s all about the journey folks, and thanks to this incredible pianist and his work, my journey so far has been unbelievabley fullfilling. I still struggle not to shed a tear after listening to it all the way through. Come to think of it I must be responsible for at least half the views!
@@diezebeats9024 Hi Dieze, if you go over to Jérémy Floury’s youtube channel he has transcribed this and a few more of Pascals pieces. They are available for purchase.

I feel like so many piano players these days, and musicians in general, just do not understand true musical shaping, nuance, and genre. This video is awesome:
How can one listen to this and keep back the tears - what musical bliss comes from this incredible man and his oneness with the piano. Beautiful and humbling to a pianist of 40+ years... Thank you for this - Dave
Обожаю переслушивать это исполнение. Открыла его для себя 2 года назад, всегда поднимает настроение и успокаивает, дарит ощущение, что не все так плохо. Спасибо за чудесную игру! ❤
simply the greatest. I play also with 4 four left fingers amputated half way, ring finger gone. It took me a while get back playing, but I do know sound and ear, saw many others but u r the king.
My respect to you sir/maam - tomorrow I will redouble my practice efforts in your honor. Cheers and keep doing what you love no matter what - Dave from Sydney, Aust
Just wanted to say that I know this video for a loooong time, like a few years. Today, out of nowhere it started singing in the back of my head for the whole day through. I just couldn't remember the name of the song or your name... spent a few hours searching everywhere and finally found it again. MASTERPIECE!

I love this! Such a great atmosphere. I imagine I stand on a balcony of a noble restaurant, while this song is played. I wear a suit, a whiskey in the hand and a noble beautiful lady with a red dress beside me. We look at the city lights in the evening. Such a peaceful moment. Thank you very much for uploading :)
+machinejazz. Shame on you for suggesting one cannot be noble without being rich. Some of the most noble people I've known have not been rich. And some of the most noble restaurants I know are not expensive. You have a very low opinion of those who don't have money.
