Interestingly enough John Nash himself actually didn't take medication either. He stopped taking them in 1970, believing they could harm his intellect, and still went on to live a fine life in his older days.

My prayers are with you & your son🙏🙏🙏. My Mom has a form of late-onset schizophrenia, probably schizo-affective disorder brought on by repressed trauma. Medication (Quetiapine) has helped some but she can't take the higher dosage she really needs because of her advanced age. She, too, refused to take her meds at first. I had to start playing a little hard-ball with her, as in: "Ok, no medication, no TV" and so forth. That has worked for us. I have no idea if it could work in your son's situation but I'll keep praying for a beautiful outcome for your family❤️ God bless

@@DawnMarieX You should read the book by Sylvia Nasar on which this movie is based. Movies always have to leave stuff out because they cannot be too long. Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany are both in Master and Commander and also did a great job in that. The books by Patrick O'Brien on which Master and Commander is based are also good reads.

yea I saw this film before The Oscars and then saw the ceremony and DEnzel Washington won for Training DAY which was a wild performance so its the age old question- how can you compare 2 varied great acting roles which these 2 were and so different. Some times Hollywood just will boost an actor after he loses in an earlier one ( Denzel in THE Hurricane) and he then wins for one like Training day. Kinda like when Jimmy stewart lost in 1939 for MR smith goes to washington and then he won Best actor in 1940 ( more a supporting role) and Henry Fonda should have won for Grapes of Wrath!

One was a little known writer called Akiva Goldsman who's parents had run a home for mentally disturbed kids and he himself had suffered sexual abuse, so he had a background that knew about this stuff. Grazer listened and said go away and work out the story and come back to me. Goldsman thrashed out the story you've just seen and went to Grazers home and told him the story of the film.......Grazer cried, it was so beautiful and indeed it is, everything, the story, the acting, the score and your reaction, (ha, thought he said leave your dress!)

i had a friend in school. he was a super genius. but no one knew it cuz his grades were mediocre. so anywho. later on we noticed he had mental health issues. he transfered schools. the councelor of his new school noticed his mental illness. they figured out he had a chemical imbalance. they gave him medication which rebalanced his brain chemistry and it lt him finally be able to focus. and he started exploding his school tests and he was skipped a grade or 2. turns out he was a super genius the whole time n his high intelligence was the culprit for his brain's chem imbalance. and then he went to a school for geniuses. s i know someone just like this movie character. it happens.

“I said Oppenheimer first, so I’m a genius. “. Hahahaha. That made me laugh.
Just so you know, I wouldn’t say this movie is a true story. It’s based on a true story. Ron Howard changed a lot of the facts of his life to get a good movie. I do believe it does capture the heart and soul of his life. John Nash did not see people that weren’t there. He heard voices telling him things (from outer space, I think). His wife divorced him but came back later in his life to care for him because he was left alone. He was a mathematical genius and did come up with formula that was used in many applications. He did that early in his life. The sickness that came upon him later almost left him crippled mentally. But he did come back. His biography is very much worth reading. If you’ve ever faced a problem that seems impossible to solve, especially if it’s about yourself, it will speak to you.
P.S. The Insider is another great Russell Crowe performance. I never hear people mention it. Another true story. Check it out.

I've taught math at several levels, and I am convinced everyone is good at math, just not everyone knows it. A lot of people are convinced by bad teachers that understanding math is out of their capacity, and when I taught remedial math the first thing I had to do was helping my students to get rid of that misconception. After that, the rest was easy.
In brief, if you really want to understand math (and physics), what you need is a teacher that can show you the principles in a form that makes sense to you, not someone who expects you to make sense of the jargon in a vacuum.
If you want to watch a movie that shows what I mean, I recommend Stand and Deliver. James Olmos recreating a real story of a math teacher.

A lot of people here in the comments have rightfully suggested some pretty phenomenal/must-see Russell Crowe flicks, and they are correct. I'm just going to throw one in the pile that is more of a comfy blanket wee-little nothings n meanderings of a movie... his team-up with his Gladiator director, Ridley Scott, and that's A Good Year. Important to note: based on real people, but not remotely a true story. Nash has said the movie has no root in reality. He never had any visual hallucinations. They divorced decades before. He never took any medications. They gave him insulin induced seizures, which in fact CAUSED many of his issues. He was only let out because he acted compliant. Good movie. Complete butchering of his life.

One of the problems with medicating illnesses like schizophrenia is that we're not very good at targeting them, so a level that allows someone to function safely can also knock out their ability to do/feel a bunch of desirable things too (the scene where John is just holding the baby without reacting always gets to me). I've seen it firsthand with someone close, where it has swung from them literally taking themselves off-grid in a foreign country and us having to talk to the police and the British Embassy, to them just sitting in our house too shut down to communicate. They have found a balance now, but they need to keep monitoring it.
I recommend _Harvey_ if you haven't seen it yet (it's referenced briefly in this one), given your enjoyment of B&W movies. It stars James Stewart who you saw in _Rear_ _Window._

"Master and Commander" reunites him with his "prodigal roomate" co-star. Its a historical movie abord a Navy Sailing ship. Fantastically authentic portrayal of life in the British Navy, very intense battle scenes, witty dialog and of course fantastic acting.
"LA Confidential" is a police ensemble drama set in 1950s Los Angeles. Another fantastically acted story with many recognizable stars. Russell Crowe plays a tough cop with a has a thing for punishing women beaters.

High math is basically making a statement [in words like in a sentence] then translating that sentence [that is saying something] into a mathematical equation. His achievement [his contribution to society] was to "re-do" an equation that had been accepted for years as to how the relationship of individuals to a group effort was best seen. Before Nash it was mathematically accepted that for a group as a whole to do its best toward any given goal it was best for each man [or woman] in the group to do what was best for him or herself. What Nash stated first then PROVED mathematically was that the existing idea was flawed. It was "incomplete" [to put it in Nash's terms]. He proved mathematically that in order for any group with a set goal to best achieve that goal it IS NOT best for the group for every member to do what is best for that individual but rather that it is a balance between the group and the individuals and that for the goal to be most rapidly and best achieved each member of the group must simultaneously do what is best for him or herself AND what is best for the group. That means not only thinking of oneself [working toward the end goal] but rather keeping in mind the group as a whole reaching the goal together is the best way for everyone. As was written at the end of this movie the equation he came up with [that proved "what is best for the group as a whole is best achieved by thinking of the group as each individual also thinks of himself"] is used today in all sorts of ways from businesses to treaties between countries and more. It was his thinking about his small group and the blond and her group that put his math into words [that clip was not left in this edit]. You would think it was simple but his little idea that each man should not try for the big prize but rather each of them should accept the blond girls' friends as their conquest and everyone wins was a really big deal when proved mathematically to the science field in general. [it helped allot as the last equation that was standing in for his until that point was flawed as he pointed out] Great movie. Great reaction.
