I've never studied West African belief system that also was taken to Latin America which is sometimes called "voodoo" etc. However, most 'traditional' belief systems display elements of what Frazer called the "imitative principle".

magic is hoodoo and voudou is the negative part of it
you still find practices like this also in louisiane etc.
