One of my favorite films - and the finale with that long single take shot of the ballroom scene is famous in film history. I also like the fun Hitchcock has with upper class British manners.
The shouting couple (who would turn out to be victim and killer) at the beginning of the film were real-life upper class: Pamela Carme, who was the daughter of a viscount and George Curzon, who was the grandson of an earl.
During the early beach scenes in Cornwall, only the 'extras', including the 'going to bathe' girls, were actually there on location: the young man who climbs down the cliff and runs over to and away from the body is a stand-in; Derrick's cliff and beach scenes were all done in the studio. Only the two girls who 'found' the body: Anna Konstam and Peggy Simpson, were in both the location and studio-based shots for that scene. None of the other main actors were available at the time (August 1937).
Basil Radford, who plays Erica's Uncle, was also the first half of the Charters & Caldicott duo who turned up in movies like THE LADY VANISHES and NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH.
At the time this film was made, Nova was engaged to, or at least dating, the young assistant director, Pen Tennyson. They got married, but sadly he was killed in the war, in 1941. She did remarry later on.
Wonderful film! The cast in this one is equally so! In fact, i love Hitchcock movies too! So im gonna name all of this lot: PSYCHO, BLACKMAIL, ROPE, SABOTEUR, THE LODGER, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, REBECCA, NOTORIOUS, DOWNHILL, ELSTREE CALLING (cos he co directed a suspense sketch in the musical revue), THE BIRDS, FRENZY, WALTZES FROM VIENNA, TORN CURTAIN, THE RING, NUMBER 17, THE SKIN GAME, MURDER! ENTER SIR JOHN, THE FARMER´S WIFE, THE MANXMAN, EASY VIRTUE, THE PLEASURE GARDEN, YOUNG AND INNOCENT, SECRET AGENT, TO APPREHEND A THIEF (or CATCH, if you want to put it the way it is), VERTIGO, UNDER CAPRICORN, DIAL M FOR MURDER, SPELLBOUND, CHAMPAGNE, RICH AND STRANGE (plus the silent movie techniques used in the Folies Bergere sequence, theyre beautiful!), THE 39 STEPS, LIFEBOAT, WITHOUT A SHADOW OF THE DOUBT, SABOTAGE, THE LADY VANISHES, REAR WINDOW, STRANGERS ON THE TRAIN, FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (although the middle length of the film stalls a bit), SUSPICION, JAMAIACA INN, etc, etc, etc, etc.
I never realized, until now, that Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma, were born just a day apart from each other. Alfred was born on 8.13.1899 and Alma on 8.14.1899.
big thanks for listing location of films!.. a key piece of intel! PS: can you IMAGINE walking out front door, and to the right of your porch are roaring, seaside cliffs!😳😳😳🤦🏼🤦🏼 the beauty is almost nauseating.
The Hitch's cameo starts at 15:40 . He's on the left wearing a tam and dark coat and holding a camera. Can't work the dang thing, but we're lucky he can pay someone to shoot the pic. Otherwise, we'd have nothing to see but exposed film.
Always watch the black and white version if available with old movies. Great care was taken at the time when they were filmed, to capture the right shades and contrasts, and that gets lost when a film is colorized.
@@dann4koh Not all "progress" merits the name. I have yet to see a colorized version of any old b&w film. The lighting and color saturation varies from frame to frame. Making it, for anyone with a discerning eye, too distracting to watch.
я этот фильм уже здесь вижу второй раз, один раз я уже его посмотрела. не помню на каком канале это было уже, да это было на вашем канале, и снова он появился здесь через 12 часов, перезалив одних и тех же фильмов
For gdp, if you improve tech and sell 2x the product at 1/2 the price, gdp stays the same, but twice as many ppl have phones, or cars, etc. but theres 2x the product out there.
You should overlook the disgustingly bad acting + direction of the first scene here, because overall the movie is better than that. Heaven only knows why Hitchcock included that awful scene when the film would be so much better without it! But his trademark sense of humor is here in every scene, making it another great one.
As late as 1937, Hitchcock still countenanced , and nobody called him on the fake- minstrel" blackface" -Sidemen only: the bandleader remained white. Well, they can't blame me. I was only six years old when the film came out and nobody was 'woke' in in 1937.
If you didnt work it out yet, click on the wheel shaped icon top of the screen on the right. There's a menu that says subtitles. Click on that and there will be a list of languages, and if you scroll to the bottom of the lost it will say no subtitles. Click on that and the subtitles will disappear.

What a genius Hitchcock was...not a single boring moment in the film...
Except that really horrible first scene of the argument between a woman + her husband.
Only very good directors can.produve such fast -, moving film,!
You can tell from the first scene that this is going to be a great movie.
Unbelievable! Story telling from a master story teller … this is such a great movie!

Heck of a warning in 1936. Too bad it went unheeded. Three years later and the world was immersed in WW II.
