How to Taper Jeans Professionally

- You spent good money on those jeans, do you really want to do it yourself? Watch as we explain how to professionally taper denim jeans using a Caballo (Feed-off-the-arm, 3-needle chainstitch machine) sewing machine and Union Special at the hem.
Some jeans are sewn with an overlock machine and single needle stitch on the inseam while others are sewn with flat-felled (lapseam). The lap seam is more common on men’s jeans and work pants because it is the stronger of the two types. The overlock machine with a single needle stitch is more common on women’s jeans and tighter fitting jeans in general because the overlock is less bulky and more flexible.
This video explains the process in detail of tapering jeans that are constructed with a lap seam. In most of the videos we observed on the web, the tapering is done at the outseam, which is not the correct way to taper jeans or pants. Especially if the jeans or pants are produced in selvedge fabric. Usually, tapering is done on the outseam out of bare necessity because the sewer does not have to right equipment to taper at the inseam. The lap seam scares them. That’s understandable. However, if you are not sewing on a home machine, professional tapering should always be done using the same techniques and equipment as the manufacturer to ensure the best possible outcome.

That was a thing of beauty. I don't have those machines and my clients will not send them out to be done professionally. I don't taper jeans precisely because my machines can't handle it. But I do hem them and get a pretty fair approximation with what I have. Clients are happy with it but I feel like I am trying to draw a Mona LIsa with crayons when I see videos like this. Love the professionalism.
How to taper jeans professionally. Step one: take it to a professional

This man has a popular hip hop culture, clothing brand in the 90's named after him. That's Maurice Malone!!!
Where can I get a machine that does chain stitch? When I taper I leave the chain stitch alone and do the other sides.
Skills Way to go playa its an art
I’m looking to get a taper added to my selvedge jeans, but my local tailor says that to taper on the inside seams, he has to take material off all the way up to the crotch, and will reduce the size of the thighs. Does this sound right? I assumed the taper could start from wherever you wanted it to?
What type of iron are you using?
The music you're using brings me back to chemistry lessons during my junior high school years...
Awesome video but who has one of these? Very few for sure.
Im wanting to do a perfessional look at home, which is what I feel thid video originally implied.. Bummed!
The "double rolled" seam on the inseam of jeans is called a "flat fell seam" & can be done on a home machine, without any special foot or equipment.
Just "GOOGLE" flat fell seam & go through the results.
There are videos that show how to do it with the most basic of equipment.
Hope that helps you out. 😉
had no clue it was this indepth. now i know why indigo proof an railcar charge what they do for this service
Not everyone takes the jeans apart and puts them back together like us. Most will only take the jeans apart at the taper, then join the sewing to the original sewing. We do it our way because we manufacture jeans. We have the equipment and ability to go the full step. We open the jeans to more accurately re-draft the leg shape. Our service allows customers the options to choose the width at hem, knee and thigh (when possible). Our goal, whenever possible, is to have jeans sewn with clean stitch lines to look like the original sewing. Meaning, no new stitch lines joining on-top of original stitch lines, which show signs of alterations.

Great video. But you really could do without the music as your voice isn't that clear and gets even more muffled by the music. Still great tho.
How much is this service?. Take me as your apprentice, I have 0 experience but I'm interested
nyc
Hello, Could you tell me what kind of machine that is please...? Thanks
It called a few different names. Just Google "Feed-off-the-arm Lapseamer Sewing Machine Caballo" and you should find photos and machines for sale.
The music would go better with a video of someone taking jeans off (slowly)... nevertheless, a nice insight into the tailoring process.
I've had two pairs of jeans tappered by two tailors and they both did the taper on the outside seam and not the inseam....both pairs of jeans seem off. i'm going to request this method next time.
That's because she doesnt have a machine like that
If she buys those two industrial heavy duty machines, with light alterations business. Those overhead charges would be passed on to you. Not cost effective. You said they seam off. When your bias us twisted. You know that without a doubt. If you dont have a Jean's company in your area, order tapered jeans that fit is my suggestion. People think sewing Is a thrift measure when in fact supplies are way costly
@@Toofastfourluv they are not good tailors if they tapered the jeans from the outside seam and the outcome were jeans that look off. Has nothing to do with the machines they used but how it is done
😩 why don’t we have these guys in mia. Please recommend someone in south Florida
We receive alterations work from all over the USA. We handle the shipping both ways for only $15 no matter how many jeans you want to send. Checkout our online ordering.
Would you be able to do this to a pair of Double RL jeans for me? Is this possible? Please let me know thanks
Yes, we do any brand of jeans & carpenter pants. We've done Double RL's before.
i lost my two jeans bcz of un- professional 😟 and now i dont go to any tailor Shop ☹️☹️ i hope u repair/resize my jean
That happened to me too. Like 3 times. They were all chinese dry cleaners that "tailor". Never again.
Why is it important to tapper jeans from the inseams?
Finally someone who demonstrated this process the right way and not some DIY kid who thinks they know everything because they have a sewing machine.
Can you recommend anyone in Ohio? It’s not that easy to find businesses around here.
Not a big fan of felled seams. More or serger top stitched.
Is this thee maurice malone?
Where are you located? Great job
We are located in Williamsburg Brooklyn, but you can order tapering from anywhere in the USA. We email shipping labels.
I've been working all day long, finally took a break. And what do I do? Watch how to taper jeans...
It’s called a lap fell machine
Turn the music down bruh. Can barely hear you talk.
You don’t have to rip the threads but whatever works for you i guess
Music louder than the narration kills the video for me.
A few people have commented on the music's volume level so we will be more conscious of the voice/music balance going forward.
