Yeah!! I had taken a bit of the break from the series for a little while. But now that my brain is fully developed, I've really wanted to go back and take a look at this series and analyze all it has to offer!
I'm looking forward to these deep dives, I've also noticed how the story unfolds in an interesting way. For example the series gets less comedic and silly as the series progresses.
Yes!!! The tone of the story definitely shifts over time. Black Butler covers some pretty serious topics, especially in more recent chapters, so it makes sense that the series has pushed it's comedy to the background.
I think in the first volume Sebastian was meant to be the protagonist, but now the attention has decidely shifted to Ciel. Indeed, he's become my favourite and I think the manga did a very good and bold plot twist with the twin "revelation." Ciel is given a lot of context, family history and psychological depth, and is also drawn with a lot of attention to details (I recall Yana writing he's his favourite fashion victim, as she's addicted to fancy clothes 😂). It's good that the manga makes you discover things gradually and makes you question Sebastian's hidden motives. One of the best drawings for me is when Sebastian covers his face after Ciel's request to stay in his room, as if he's genuinely sorry for the child, and then he grins, revealing he's evil and everything is going as he planned (i. e., Ciel is trusting and relying on a demon who just wants to eat his soul, and Sebastian finds it hilarious). I'd like to get some glimpses of Sebastian's mind as well, if only Yana would stick to the main story! Thank you very much for your appreciation for Elizabeth: after Book of Atlantic I think she's an amazing character. She doesn't receive much credit as in the anime she's portrayed as very annoying, but she just wants to make Ciel happy and now she feels justly isolated and betrayed from both Our!Ciel and Sebastian. Amazing work and outfit!
YES! Justice for my girl Lizzy! I do think it's nice that most of the fans I interact with these days seem to love and adore her as well! The fandom has grown to appreciate her so much. I also love how the manga slowly reveals Sebastian's true nature early on. It was probably so cool to readers who may have gone into it blind. Sebastian could be such an interesting character to see the thoughts of now that the plot has moved so much since these first chapters, but I'm not sure if Yana will ever return to his point of view. It would be so cool though! Ciel really does have so many little outfits! Null and I compiled a list to rank a little while back, and we gathered 66 outfits, and that was still missing some.

Especially after Book of Atlantic, we see a real romantic potential for the two, but I think Ciel would miss her as a friend and part of the family most of all. Ah, yes, it was appalling to marry between cousins, but Queen Victoria and Albert were cousins and generated 9 children, of whom the female ones carried the emophilia gene (a rare blood disease) and the male ones were all sick. After that all the courts of Europe had sick heirs, and finally in the 1890s a law was approved that made it more difficult for cousins to marry, but it was not impossible nonetheless (sorry for the historical digression). It's sad that Yana seems to have lost interest in Sebastian and his potential, but in the manga as well: too many flashbacks and unnecessary long point of views! Oh, and there's no publishing date for chapter 204, or is it me that missed it?

It seems to me like it still is in Japan. However, I do get what you're saying. It's definitely fallen to the wayside in English speaking anime/manga communities. I'm honestly not sure if that ever will change, but there's still a small bit of active fandom out there, and small fandoms are a lot more fun than larger ones imo.
@@PocketLeaves VERY TRUE because a smaller fandom means no fighting like for example a big fandom like BNHA since a lot of people know about it there will be ship wars and all that but for Black Butler there is no fighting cause if you find someone who likes Black Butler nowadays you’ll just be happy and wanna talk and be friends with them
I wish it was more popular to a Male audience, cause Black Butler is sometimes seen as a chick flick anime, which I don't agree with because it has a lot of things that even men can enjoy.

Also because twisted wonderland has a lot of foreshadowing that lead up 2 what's happening with the second part of book 7 that I still can't believe that those details were under my nose this whole time. And more fitting because both stories r created by Yana
I forgot to mention that TVs actually did exist at this time, though you couldn't go to the store to buy one. It's not unrealistic for a nobleman who is favored by the most powerful person alive at the time would own one. Also pure silver is extremely fragile.
I’m currently reading the black butler manga, I’m on chapter 67, the story has me hooked 😊 I also got to meet J Michael Tatum at a convention a few months ago, he was so nice, hopefully they continue the anime one day 😊

It's got a lot of strengths in it's art and story telling that tended to get lost in the anime imo. But I'm glad that you're enjoying it so far! Apparently, a house steward is a male housekeeper. A housekeeper usually female is in charge of the female servants (maids) and thus is in charge of managing housekeeping duties, while the head butler is in charge of the male servants (valets) and are in charge of service.😅 but none of that really matters in black butler since Sebastian literally does everything.
@PocketLeaves technically the butler was the one in charge of the male household servants, the housekeeper was in charge of the female household servants, and the steward was in charge of EVERYONE: all household servants and all outdoor servants (gardeners, grooms, etc.), and even was the one who tenant farmers paid rent to. They were the stand-in for the lord of the house (in terms of running the house). But of course that doesn't apply in Black Butler, because Sebastian takes on the role that, in Victorian Britain, a steward would have done (plus all the supernatural things).

Ah, welcome! If this has piqued your interest, you should totally give the series a shot!!! Up to you if you read the manga first or watch the anime. I think the anime is enjoyable in its own right, but it does not follow the manga super well. The manga is also extremely good, and most people tell you to start with that, so you get the whole story from the get go.
And now I can say I'm caught up 😊 I can't remember when I first got into Black Butler- but I know it was back when I was still just getting into anime. One of the things I always loved from the English dub was Sebastian's vc J Michael Tatum, because as I come to realize- he's been a voice in a ton of things that I enjoy ^^ and I'm glad to quite possibly have the chance to meet him at an upcoming weeb con in my area. Black Butler is one of those things that every once in awhile I get obsessed with all over again, and I can't be more than happy to have someone analyzing it (Yes I know I already mentioned that). Something that makes a story really good is when you're invested in the characters enough to want to know more, and that's frankly why I want to try and get caught up in the manga. I know there's a lot I don't know and I especially want to get to the Blue Memory arc, even if I know it's going to sickening and sad- I have that morbid curiosity. This is really one of those mangas that on the surface more people just assume people are reading only for the attractive characters, only to realize it's probably nothing that they thought it would be. It get's so dark and depraved, and everytime I remind myself Ciel is a child, I just get moved to tears. No child should have to go through so much- to lose their childhood already, to lose their sense of security. I sometimes wonder how Ciel might've turned out if he lived out the rest of his childhood normally without any trauma ... Unfortunately, we'll probably never find out 😭
During my readthrough I was also thinking about Sakamoto Desu Ka, so it's fun to hear you also saw the similarities ! I had fully forgotten about the martial art specialist scene, but I really enjoyed it - I think it's a very strong introduction to Ciel and Sebastian's relationship. I'm very amused that you talked about historic inaccuracies without showing the Victorian Nintendo DS 🤭

recently I've felt almost guilt for loving this story, i have seen people on all platforms look at black butler and only see a pedophilic perverted series and i dunno what to do, I'm not even sure of it anymore but supposedly the author wanted a relationship between seb and ciel. And if that's true 1 it didn't happen 2 we don't even know if they wanted to portray that kind of relationship in a bad light i mean they certainly never tried to make the SA of any of the children in this story seem " Alright " so i know that it's in truth what it is now is not pedophilic but i am also conflicted. I personally have barely any morals more so a concept of morals,which now makes me conflicted on one point i really don't care but then again i don't want to be perceived as someone who accepts pedophilia never no that is where i can definitely set a line of that's bad. So any advise?
The rumor about Yana Toboso wanting Black Butler to be a yaoi between Sebastian and Ciel is a false rumor that spread in the English speaking community back in the day based on the idea that Yana supposedly had written BL under the pen name Rock Yanao. There is no supporting evidence, and it would have been impossible for her to publish such a story in the magazine that she was partnered with (Black Butler is and always has been published in a shounen magazine, where as BL is a subset of shoujo). I can't deny that the series has it's moments of baiting, and the official artwork sometimes gets a bit uncomfortable. But, at the end of the day, it's just bait. Yes there are moments in the manga where Ciel is sexualized, and it's weird and gross. But not so much so that it should be treated different from any other anime or manga. Tons of anime and manga have these issues, but they don't necessarily have the same reputation. What I think gave Black Butler that reputation is a fandom that predominately supported a romantic and sexual relationship between Ciel and Sebastian. The fact that you are concerned and conflicted shows that you're aware of the issues and have more morals that you realize. You know where your heart lies, and that's the most important thing. It's very possible to be interested in something, but also still be critical of elements you don't like, or the issues with in a piece of media. I wouldn't worry too much about how others perceive you. At this point, you'll only be deemed a predator, or accepting of predators, if you ship SebaCiel or any other adult+child ship in the series, or just say and do things that support pedophilia. So I really wouldn't worry. Majority of fans now a days seem to be pretty against the more problematic and disgusting elements of the manga/anime and old fandom. I mean if Black Butler was really as bad as to be something that would deem fans of it as accepting of pedophilia, most of us wouldn't publicly talk about the series or make fan content for it.
I feel like you can’t experience black butler without confronting this side of things, especially with so many of the fans (younger and naiver fans I hope) supporting it. There are times where the series has pushed the line and I’ve felt like dropping it, but at the same time, there are few fictional accounts of SA that present its horrors from the perspective of the victim as thoroughly as BB without having to cross into the explicit. Anytime we are made to feel that sebastian is a sexual threat, both to Ciel and others like Beast, I believe it is deliberate to capture the malevolence of his nature and make us uncomfortable. Ultimately, his goal is to corrupt Ciel’s soul as deeply as he can without breaking his ‘trust’ and that makes him so similar to a manipulative abuser
I’m consuming each black butler video I find now that I finished season 1- my feelings have been shattered because I wasn’t really into the anime at the first few episodes but I kept watching and I- that was amazing. Now I’m on my way to read the manga ❤ The main things that threw me off was the weird like faux-cues of romantic vibes the anime gave off but because Ciel is well, Ciel, it’s played off as “haha you thought” and then it kind of makes sense at the end pfft.
Ah, welcome to the fandom! Black Butler is an interesting series, and it's got a good story. But yeah, there is weird vibes surrounding Ciel and and Sebastian. That's in the manga as well, but the anime does play it up a lot more. I hope you do enjoy the manga! It's got a lot of really cool moments, and the art is really good!
So! about the ring(how long have you been in this fandom?!)(JK...)first, remember it was supposed to be part of the Hope DIAMOND, remember? so yeah, blue diamond, not a sapphire. And silver is more fragile and apt to split, but the ring isn't silver, it's white gold. Lau is under the guarddog's control, that's why it's okay if Lau does it. Sebastian being unclear keeps the servants busy and out of trouble.

I love this franchise. I'm excited about the anime adaptation of the Public School Arc, and hopefully they'll adapt the Emerald Witch arc as well.

And if that's true 1 it didn't happen 2 we don't even know if they wanted to portray that kind of relationship in a bad light i mean they certainly never tried to make the SA of any of the children in this story seem " Alright " so i know that it's in truth what it is now is not pedophilic but i am also conflicted. I personally have barely any morals more so a concept of morals,which now makes me conflicted on one point i really don't care but then again i don't want to be perceived as someone who accepts pedophilia never no that is where i can definitely set a line of that's bad. The rumor about Yana Toboso wanting Black Butler to be a yaoi between Sebastian and Ciel is a false rumor that spread in the English speaking community back in the day based on the idea that Yana supposedly had written BL under the pen name Rock Yanao. There is no supporting evidence, and it would have been impossible for her to publish such a story in the magazine that she was partnered with (Black Butler is and always has been published in a shounen magazine, where as BL is a subset of shoujo). I can't deny that the series has it's moments of baiting, and the official artwork sometimes gets a bit uncomfortable. But, at the end of the day, it's just bait. Yes there are moments in the manga where Ciel is sexualized, and it's weird and gross. But not so much so that it should be treated different from any other anime or manga. Tons of anime and manga have these issues, but they don't necessarily have the same reputation. What I think gave Black Butler that reputation is a fandom that predominately supported a romantic and sexual relationship between Ciel and Sebastian.
The fact that you are concerned and conflicted shows that you're aware of the issues and have more morals that you realize. You know where your heart lies, and that's the most important thing. It's very possible to be interested in something, but also still be critical of elements you don't like, or the issues with in a piece of media. I wouldn't worry too much about how others perceive you. At this point, you'll only be deemed a predator, or accepting of predators, if you ship SebaCiel or any other adult+child ship in the series, or just say and do things that support pedophilia. So I really wouldn't worry. Majority of fans now a days seem to be pretty against the more problematic and disgusting elements of the manga/anime and old fandom. I mean if Black Butler was really as bad as to be something that would deem fans of it as accepting of pedophilia, most of us wouldn't publicly talk about the series or make fan content for it.

I feel like you can’t experience black butler without confronting this side of things, especially with so many of the fans (younger and naiver fans I hope) supporting it. There are times where the series has pushed the line and I’ve felt like dropping it, but at the same time, there are few fictional accounts of SA that present its horrors from the perspective of the victim as thoroughly as BB without having to cross into the explicit.
Anytime we are made to feel that sebastian is a sexual threat, both to Ciel and others like Beast, I believe it is deliberate to capture the malevolence of his nature and make us uncomfortable. Ultimately, his goal is to corrupt Ciel’s soul as deeply as he can without breaking his ‘trust’ and that makes him so similar to a manipulative abuser
Tip with meat: get rapid, even caramalization in the beginning, but then let it cook more slowly.

I’m consuming each black butler video I find now that I finished season 1- my feelings have been shattered because I wasn’t really into the anime at the first few episodes but I kept watching and I- that was amazing. Now I’m on my way to read the manga ❤
The main things that threw me off was the weird like faux-cues of romantic vibes the anime gave off but because Ciel is well, Ciel, it’s played off as “haha you thought” and then it kind of makes sense at the end pfft.
Ah, welcome to the fandom! Black Butler is an interesting series, and it's got a good story. But yeah, there is weird vibes surrounding Ciel and and Sebastian. That's in the manga as well, but the anime does play it up a lot more. I hope you do enjoy the manga! It's got a lot of really cool moments, and the art is really good!

And silver is more fragile and apt to split, but the ring isn't silver, it's white gold. Lau is under the guarddog's control, that's why it's okay if Lau does it. Sebastian being unclear keeps the servants busy and out of trouble.
