Billie is a great singer, but her brother is a Hell of a musician. He deserves just as much praise as her.
I love how in most performances when they are sitting next to each other and Finnease would look at Billie and nods his head as a way of approval .it is just so wholesome
I've always thought that Billie was an incredible artist and singer. Where most artists tend to work from mezzo up to fortissimo, Billie goes from pianissimo up to mezzo. And in that range she's able to get such wonderful nuance. She leaves space around the notes, and isn't afraid of silences that give room for the melody, countermelodies, and harmony to each be enjoyed as they work together. I agree that her style of singing is challenging, not just because of the physiological reasons, but the psychological ones as well: it's scary being that fragile and exposed.
"When the Party's Over" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and still my favorite song Billy's done. It's just so haunting, and it's nothing but her voice from start to finish. But, this one is really, really good, though. She is immensely talented.
So true!!! 👏🏻👏🏻 She has an emotional intelligence in her voice that is something unique, a color in her “dark/angelic” voice that I have never heard before… I have been following the performances of any artist, the legends, the vocalists for 30 years, but when Billie arrived I finally said ... she has art in her wonderful vocals, but even when you hear her singing in acoustic live Bad guy or All the good girls go to hell and Bury a friend .. she is so unique in her vocals that I said this girl is phenomenal ... in everything: in the composition, in the vocals, in the music videos she directs/edits, but even in her performances, she has an overwhelming charisma. After 20 years I see a true artist ... she is complete, for me she is worth more than many other artists who even if they have a wider vocal range, don’t make me hear anything, all vocals already heard and lacking in creativity .. she put the creative and artistic signature in all her works.
I cried for this song like many of the others she made ...😭 it puts that simplification that forces you to listen to what she has to say, she hypnotizes you and then when she goes into the deepest parts of the lyrics, she raise her voice so she gets inside you and destroys you ... what a technique.
I suggest you to listen to her jazzy voice 20-50s covers such as
- "Fever" to the Peggy Lee tribute, even when she sings with the legend Debbie Harry, wonderful
- "Sally's song” from Nightmare before Christmas ... wonderful ..
- " Bad "by Michael Jackson .. HERE .. Her jazz vocality is really wonderful .. so young but what a vocal technique

@@gilapotter8853 those words come from Barbara Broccoli, the producer of the James Bond film, in an interview she almost started to cry for what she considers Billie and Finneas artists with true talent .. and she gave a speech on Billie's voice saying that she has a voice timeless, an incredible wisdom and emotional intelligence even if she was only 17 when she made the James Bond music with which they later won the Oscar.

@weirdos and warriors Punk/metal/indie/alternative enthusiast of 50-odd years here. Billie Eilish is none of those things. Also, she is all of those things, at least in attitude and courage. Billie's vocal has become my favorite ever sound in 5 decades on this planet. I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest that, while I agree with you entirely regarding your list of Billie's vocal peers, I actually think she'll be considered a member of an arguably even more exclusive club - with the likes of Billie Holliday, Etta James, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Ella Fitzgerald etc. Partly because of her natural tone, partly because of the incredible evolution/maturing of her voice in just 5 short years, partly because she loves that jazzy genre ... but mainly because SHE IS THAT GOOD. i think the breaths in between the last part add to the kind of scared anxious feeling. i kinda wish it was in the track
i have adhd and usually have to skip forward a bit in reaction/review/analysis vids, but you were so easy to pay attention to! i didn't skip forward once! i always appreciate when vocal coaches acknowledge her talent, especially since when she first came out a lot of them were close minded. many people don't think she's impressive like some of the powerhouse vocalists, so it's always nice being reminded by vocal coaches how unique she is. the control on her voice is insane
would love to hear you react to "nina cried power" by hozier (ugh he is so amazing - the resonance in his tone is unmatched as far as male vocalists go these days) and would LOVE to hear your thoughts on "only if for a night" by florence + the machine (specifically her royal albert hall performance - the hd vid since i believe the very top result isn't recorded well). both such stunning vocalists and i hozier's song is especially impactful lyrically and florence is so criminally underrated and i absolutely adore that performance. she has that fast vibrato and unique tone that vocal coaches don't go over often and i barely see any vocal coaches reacting to her!

Liked your honest reaction. I'm glad you said "voice teacher community" because that admits it is a herd. Even now some vocal coaches don't get Billie Eilish. See for example that English-accented older lady who says "I wonder if she's singing."
Most singing today is bland because you are coaching to copy the current pop hit, or win the next televised talent show. What's unique about each singer gets wiped out by vocal coaching. No wonder then something unique like "bad guy" becomes a hit.
Billie and her brother grew up singing in children's choirs. They have well-trained classic voices as well. Aren't we glad they're not following the herd?

For either your own pleasure (I believe!) or for a reaction why not listen to Billie singing Peggy Lee's "FEVER" July 27, 2022 at the Hollywood Bowl in a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee. [youtbue channel "SoCalLiveitLive" on July 28, 2022 - other channels also] She also sang a duet with Debbie Harry (of "Blondie" fame) on Peggy Lee's "Is that all there is?" On "FEVER" Billie is complemented by the incredible Chrisian McBride on string bass (the drummer is also very good). Or go back 13 months to Billie singing "Sally's Song" for Danny Elfman's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" from October 30, in Los Angeles, 2021 [youtube channel "lucid"]. If you follow other vocal coaches reaction's Tristan Paredes breaks down Billie on Sally's Song and gives a heart warming reaction on Nov 4, 2021 - but I would love to hear your reaction. I believe Billie is very versatile and will occasionally - perhaps not as often as we would wish - surprise us with examples!
Other directions: given that Billie writes lyrics to be sung in character, who or what is the protagonist in "The 30th" ? Also, for (early tragedies) the antagonist whose words are reported (with the character off stage.) One possibility here: Finneas and Billie herself if she had crashed the Fireball. As to the singing: in 2020 she started down the tough road to develop the bel canto skill set. Starts with breathing. "The 30th" has Finneas writing to showcase special treats such as shifting from chest voice to head voice for an exclamation. She works very hard at these things. There's easily a half-dozen professional-level treats here. Yeah, she's getting better.
The appoggio going into the bridge gives us another piece of bel canto technique. Kid knows what she is doing.

As a singer songwriter she is one of the best going today. But if a singer like Daneliya Tuleshova gets a hold of one of her songs you have what I believe is perfect marriage. Nope. Not hearing it. She's breathy with no particular vocal skills that I can discern. I don't even feel the emotions no matter how hard I try. I don't get how somebody with her voice gets as far as she does.
