Can't deny the end speaks facts 😂 White haired pretty boys FTW Great video 👏 I love how Link Click brought some focus on topics like regret. The second season still had such things, though kinda easy to miss because it wasn't as clear/straightforward as the episodic-ish first season. It's such a fantastic series. If there will be more donghua like Link Click, and anime continues to recycle the same overused themes, donghua will be more popular sooner than expected.
The white haired pretty boys can’t be stopped 😭 and just like u said, donghua can take advantage of some anime studios greediness. The people just want more creativity and works like link click have shown it. Can’t wait to see more donghua like it!
Nice video! As a general donghua fan, I always love it when people discover donghua and all the good in it. ^^ Now as someone who’s been following the donghua industry since 2018, I do have a few thoughts!: Censorship will likely remain an obstacle for who knows how long, especially since some of it has tightened in recent years with Xi Jinping coming into office. So it does suck, but Chinese censors are both not as intense and also way more unknowable than western people always assume. As someone who’s a fan of Chinese media and who’s closely followed video games, cdramas, audio dramas, novels, manhua, and donghua especially, I _keep_ seeing people who go, “Wow, I can’t believe the Chinese government allowed this Chinese media to do this! That’s wild!!” Which has become a clear sign to me that the censors just aren’t what people expect, especially from a western lens. I mean, it’s easy to assume how dystopian and cruel and harsh it would be, but reality is always surprisingly more unpredictable and flexible than one would expect. I can bet that a chunk of people here will probably be shocked into awe by the audacity of the animated film _Dahufa._ Hell, I’ve seen people taken aback by the Sumerian plot line in Genshin since it was another “challenging the system of power” story. As for _Dahufa,_ it’s literally about a dystopian, authoritarian government where one man has built himself up as a god to control civilians that he doesn’t even value-civilians that he abuses and steps on and uses in his chase to get more riches and power. So many people were flabbergasted that such a film could even come out of China, because everyone felt like no film could ever question authority if it was from China. It’s surprisingly common though. If you check out _Jiang Ziya_ or _Nezha Reborn_ or _Yang Jian,_ you’ll see the same thing. It’s all got people questioning systems of power, and multiple times I’ve seen westerners respond in shock that China is capable of creating these things. In fact, it just happens all the time. China’s produced a lot of gay content by now, and despite censorship of explicit gay material, I constantly see people react with shock and surprise at how much queerness a lot of Chinese media can get away with. And of course there were those people who spread the lie about China censoring blood into a white substance that looked sexually inappropriate, which was completely false and did result in some people being surprised Chinese media even allows heavy blood to be shown lol. Similarly, people may assume Chinese media automatically equals propaganda, but that’s not really true either. Unlike the west where everything must sell and thus less palatable things must be hidden (eg US military’s demands and contributions for the MCU films), Chinese propaganda is actually super obvious, which makes it easy to avoid haha. So if anyone ever assumes _Genshin_ of all things is propaganda just because they occasionally show cultural pride for Chinese cultures and traditions, they probably need to re-evaluate what they know about propaganda and cultures and what their own prior biases are. Censorship is a spectrum and it’s one that’s always sliding. I know it’s easy to assume China’s just a big scary evil entity because of its government, which makes people assume everything it does must be super controlled and heavy-handed, but this isn’t always the case. Because it’s a spectrum, a lot of things can fall in the middle, and the things that Chinese media _can_ get away with _can_ be more than you might first expect, at least based on one’s preconceived notions of what a communist government _should_ censor haha. As for whether China’s animation industry can beat Japan’s… I’m not going to pretend like China is almost there. They’ve come a _shockingly_ long way since the boom started in 2018, as we’ve gone from a couple praised series (such as _Quan Zhi Gao Shou_ and _Mo Dao Zu Shi,_ which did show up in this video) to quite a number of good ones. In fact, I have a recommendations list for donghua and manhua that is now 200+ pages long-and while part of that is thanks to me also adding summaries and posters, it’s still indicative of how fast the industry is growing. If nothing else, China is doing decently well for itself. And yes, it’ll quite take some time yet for it to be respected internationally-not just because of the difference between the Chinese and Japanese industries, but also because there’s unfortunately a lot of sinophobia in the world right now and many _refuse_ to give donghua a chance. But it’s not necessarily as if China is _trying_ to overtake Japan. Many of these animators grew up on Japanese anime (which is also ironic and fun since the Japanese animation industry received influence early on from China), which has informed their own work as they seek to tell their own creative stories. Plus there are differences in style between the two, such as China releasing a lot more 3D CGI shows than Japan. But even in its 2D animation, when it _is_ more stilted and awkward, I just remember that people managed to live through the limited animation era of Japanese anime in the 2000s, so I don’t see why they can’t handle China finding its footing (besides again, the sinophobia). Donghua has certainly seen more and more well-animated series recently, with pretty good stories too, from _Link Click_ to _The Legend of Luo Xiaohei, Tian Guan Ci Fu, Scissor Seven, All Saints Street, Fei Ren Zai, White Cat Legend, Beryl and Sapphire, Fox Spirit Matchmaker,_ and more (some of these you can even see the jump in quality between seasons, like in some of my favourites: _White Cat Legend, Beryl and Sapphire, Fox Spirit Matchmaker…_ It’s pretty neat!). If China’s proven anything by 2023, it’s that although its animation industry is still growing, it _is_ growing _fast._ And considering how difficult animation is, I’m glad more people are discovering the hidden gems that are in donghua. ^^
So much truth in this comment, thank you for liking the video and even more for creating such a well written comment. I think it’s exactly like you said, a lot of the hate or negative views towards donghua stems from sinophobic views. As an American myself Ik too many other Americans who simply have the view of “oh china communist, china bad, can’t consume anything chinese”. It’s so dumb but unfortunately common, that being said there are people like myself who can see through that and people around the world who hopefully start to give donghua a chance. It may not be better than Japanese animation but that’s not a knock in any way to it’s own. For one Japan already outsources from china so that alone should credit china some points, but on top of that like you said, they’ve come a long way and are only growing at this point. Censorship is clearly a tough obstacle but regardless I think there has been so many great donghua and only more to come!

Capitalism is the main root problem on why Donghua cannot be as popular as anime. As we all know anime being a long established media that already has a massive fanbase while donghua are kinda niche and barely have worldwide recognition and only recently got some traction. It is an uphill battle for donghua to actually overthrow the anime industry. However as much capitalism works against Donghua it also works in favour of them as well. Lmk what’s good to talk through like discord, Instagram, etc. I’ve actually needed someone else in the anime space but rarely found it, would love to stay in touch. Might be a little bit busy this coming week with college and work etc. but always down to collab and talk, lmk.
