Re zero takes the isekai genre and uses it properly. Most isekai are just a power fantasy lacking any character writing. Subaru is isekai’d and he sees this as his opportunity to finally start over but its not. He just ignores his past failure and makes the same mistakes. Only through confronting his past and accepting that he was also treating himself wrong, could he properly start over and take a different path toward a better future. For me, this is the best way to write isekai. Its not about a cheat to overcome your problems but an opportunity. I haven’t seen any other isekai accomplish this so well.

Imo Konosuba is beautifully written as well. (Speaking about the light novel here so spoiler alert) Despite being an absolute comedy of a story, the main character Kazuma (Aqua, Megumin. and Lalatina too) have wonderful character arcs throughout the series, but we can't see what improved in them clearly because spotting a person's good points is way harder than seeing bad points. And this is amazing because Kazuma is pretty much an asshole! At the end of the story he became less of an asshole, still an asshole, but very likeable. Even though he acts and say stuff that makes him look like he will go back to Earth at any chances he get, he does care alot about the Konoworld and the people init. At the end when he's heavily injured, he could've just accept the opportunity and side with the bad guys and live a life full of wealth, free of hardships like he wanted. But he said fuck it and sacrifices himself even though he knows well that he won't get any more chances to get revived (Heh). He came from a weak perverted coward adventurer to a weak perverted coward adventurer who stays one minute longer to save the world! And that is because he realized how beautiful the world he once thought was bad is and he can't live a life free of hardships because it's what gives him a life that he actually wants.
Re:zero feels like the only main story that takes hard stance against escapism and more importantly process how to accept yourself and find value in others...so you don't have this urges for escapism
Yes yes yes ! Exactly, it does that and after presenting itself as the typical isekai. It’s a big risk but it’s such an important message that it’s a risk worth taking. It’s why I rank it so high as a show.
Probably the only isekai i know that the mc would have been much happier if he never got summoned, he would have gotten over his problems, slowly, in a natural way. Instead he was forced to face every last one of his flaws head on, forced to grow in such an unnatural way, forced to fight monsters beyond his abilities. And the madlad actually did it, he pulled through them all. That’s also why i think he himself, and a lot of people, are too hard on him. He’s punching way above his weight class here, no human should be expected to be able to grow that fast and solving and achieving so much in such a short amount of time. The story legit be like “Good, you’re used to it now, now go fight the giant flying whale that erases people from existence, if you can’t do it, it’s your fault”. And he actually managed to accomplish it, despite all odds. I always get excited when he gets his Ws, but it’s also sad because it seems like he always has a lot of self hate no matter how much he has done. Best isekai and by extension, best isekai protagonist to me, i’ll see through this to the end, i hope my boy gets his happy ending, he deserves it.
Exactlyyy!! He went from this couldn’t be worse in the real world to oh god I had no idea how bad it could be, but even then he still became a hero. It was like proving self worth to the absolute max, he went above and beyond what he ever thought he could do , I really hope it is a good ending for him🙏

Subaru's backstory is so precious to me because it really just showed me some stuff that i kept overlooking, it's not like there's someone dead in his backstory, or a tragic event that happened to his home, it's just purely realistic look at what it looks like to abandon life when it was gifted to you not because they want you to be something, but they want you to be yourself

I love my fantasy anime and classics like AOT one piece etc, but sad backstory’s are usually accompanied with like the whole family dying, and it’s obv not relatable as good as it is. But this hits deep, like just the way they explained growing up and all of it just damn, but then to have positive parents as well just makes it that much better, it’s all about just living ur life as tough as it could be
Always disliked how the fandom took the I love Emilia scene. Like, for once we get an MC who fucking pick a girl and commit to her without giving false hope to the others, and we should shame him because he picked the one he actually loves over the one we think deserves him more ? I mean, I would have went for rem, most people would have, but I respect that Subaru made a choice and didn't just switch to the easier option because getting his true love was too difficult.

The contrast is big, while the good writing is noticeable. Re:Zero is just a really good contrasting tool to judge if a show is written well or if it’s complex.

Even then, there was NGNL before which had a movie and people have been begging for more for ages since. Overlord was before as well and while I haven’t seen it, I know it did receive several sequel seasons. Though, perhaps, Re:zero could still be seen as the kick off even if SAO is usually credited as the one that spawned the modern isekai boom. They were kind of slow coming in the beginning only getting 1 a year or so. Although, I think, at the time, HS battle harems were all the rage during those early-mid 2010 years leading into the isekai rage.
Fun (opionon) fact btw, Konosuba is hella funny and entertaining but imo my major taste of entertainment lays in suspense, thriller relatability deeper meaning and detailism. In those categorys its fair to say rezero is by several miles far better

Authorities are kind of a monkey's paw thing so while people may debate how exactly Subaru ended up with return by death what with Satella the witch of envy still being alive, the way it works definitely reflects Subaru's desires. Echidna who wanted immense knowledge to help people gets the book of wisdom, which contains all knowledge in existence future past present you name it but she doesn't like that it strips the process of learning from that knowledge, and infinite knowledge makes it pretty much impossible to make any decisions because there's always more you don't know which could influence the result. So yeah in the same way Subaru's return by death gives him the power to be useful to others and basically a hero, but also takes away any value he feels his life has.
Exactly it goes both ways, the power definitely makes him useful but at the same time makes it feel so easy to just throw life away, it’s a pretty wild dynamic.

Damn. I am an author and currently writing a isekai novel. One of the best inspiration that got me writing one is Re:Zero. Love every aspect of it. No joke. But I will never par with Re:Zero because it is already in range of catching Gordon Ramsay's attention level

The only other isekai where my favorite character is the main protagonist is Eminence in Shadow and that's a parody isekai where most other characters don't have much depth. After watching Re:Zero for the first Time i instantly fell in love with it. Kinda gay... Other, new Isekai out there now seem like Good maybe Really Good and sometimes absolute shit. Agreed, I love Re:zero and consider it one of the best isekais of all time. There's only one single isekai that i can think of that i consider better and that is Mushoku Tensei. The way the world is built up and the flaws shown from each and every character, especially the MC that gains insane character development during the show. It just hits so right to me, the show feels so natural for some reason. I only get this "natural" feel from subaru himself. No offense to anyone who likes the sidecharacters in re:zero but i find most of them quite distant and made purely to pull subaru forward giving them this superficial vibe. Just my personal thoughts as to why i enjoy MT more than Re:Zero.

Name a better isekai/one that rivals Re:Zero? Easy. Lord of the Mysteries. It's less Isekai and more Transmigration, imagine Subaru's case but instead of his body someone else's, someone that died, to something beyond imagination. Imagine that curse brings the attention of the authorities, who are actually powerful and recruit him, now imagine if the main character lived in a world with unimaginable horrors, enemies that one cannot simply beat with strength or friends. Be warned, I will be, not yapping, but preaching. (please do not read the DISCONTINUED, FAN MADE, MANHWA, too many have been lost to this, Lord of the MIDSTERIES. Just read the Novel.) Best Mystery novel I've read, best "Isekai", best Action, BEST power system, BEST world building, Incredible characters and one of if not THE best main characters I've ever read about! The main character goes through so much and is always having to deal with stuff because of how "Weak" he is, but the cost of strength in his world is humanity😢and not the lighthearted humanity like replacing parts of the body. The side characters are just as awesome as the main character, I have full reason to believe the only reason why all the readers love the main character so much is just because he was the one with the most focus on him. The other characters have really interesting plots and possible backstories that are never really told, a few are fleshed out really well and the rest you just have to guess at. The author does a beautiful job with not making you think characters pop out of nowhere to support/antagonize the main character. Now the world building and power system is one of the main parts of the story. I have to say I absolutely love what the main character did with the history of the world and characters. I can't say much at all without spoiling things but it all makes sense in the end, and you end up wondering at the end "Dang, I really want to know (someone)'s backstory.." Not because of just how AWESOME of a character they are, but because of how relevant they are to the history and world building. Now the qualms I WOULD have with a series but don't with Lord of the Mysteries. GODS. All good isekais have gods right, but wait a second? What? Gods either being just overpowered super humans that the main character will eventually fight, or unbeatable reality benders that are only ever supporting/gag characters? Nah, in LOTM we have deities who are unbeatable, unless from another god. The author did a really good job with the "Godhood" power system. Basically for gods, they are undeniably powerful, looking at one while not being a true deity or an "angel"(hard to explain but basically a mythical creature) will cause someone to lose control and turn into a monster(basically death). There are multiple gods in Lord of the Mysteries and there are REASONS why they want to be worshiped. Some are worshiped in an Orthodox manner, some not. Villains. Villains in most stories are normally just there to hinder the main character and make them stronger, always just above or below the main character in terms of strength. Villains that "just happen to be stronger/the same strength" of the main character always approach the main character first, in a way that's unavoidable for the main character as well. In LOTM, we have pretty much the same thing but the main character can't always beat them. And the "villains" always have a reason for attacking the main character, be it for his "characteristic"(part of the power system), the fact that he's a support class and easy pickings, or just for a reason that fits the character. Like with (someone), I'm pretty sure he was doing it for the giggles. The main character also does initiate many fights, like for others characteristics or to "act"(part of the power system). He does try to stick by morals, and he does so very well. Not in a passive "I don't want to fight" way but more in a "If I attack (so and so), I will get (something bad) in the (somewhere special) by the church of (a specific god) and erased from existence because this is my 3rd offense." Something along those lines. HOLY COW I'VE WRITTEN ALOT, You know, I'd totally start about Side characters, Supporting characters, character designs, and allat. But by now if anyone actually read this far I'm sure you might be a bit interested. Final messages 1. The start is SLOW.(to some) Some called it boring(probably the Jujutsu Kaisen fans), I enjoyed it and just thought of it as a super mysterious wholesome slice of life. Which it kind of was, until that volume 1 ending, then it was a Holesome Sliced Life.(I still am recovering). People say you can skip it, terrible idea. Volume 1 is a lot of simple world building, gives you a structure of what you should understand in the series, without it you'd be lost, and not as attached to the main character, or understand his reasoning. 2. Some people have trouble visualizing characters, the Author did a great job with character descriptions, but still there are some with trouble. Thankfully there are thousands of fan arts being created DAILY(biggest LOTM fan flex). A simple search can give you a good idea of what a character looks like, or at least how people envisioned them. (poor Merlin) Do NOT use the wiki to see characters. What I did was go to google, search "Lord of the Mysteries (character name)", Then I went to images. Scrolling down a bit WILL get you spoiled, especially on the main character. Other than him you're probably good. 3. It's a NOVEL, with NO pictures whatsoever, with over 1400 chapters. To someone who wants to read it, a very welcome surprise, to someone who is considering it but would rather go find another manhwa to read, a daunting challenge that they will likely forget about. Though if you are considering reading this, just letting you know it took me a while to get into. The slow start didn't help, I was hearing everyone hype it up like The Bible 2. Of course I was coming in thinking it'll be the best part, only to be welcomed with the world building part. I was contemplating skipping this part, but I never skipped anything before and I took that as a pride. So I took a small break then came back to it with the intent that it'd be a slice of life. Yeah it got me into it, I finished volume 1, gained some scars on my heart, then started the series for real. 4. The fanmade manhwa sucked compared to the novel, the art was bad, but people that read it compared the plot to other series and still found it incredibly interesting, and was lead to the novel, this was where they were CONVERTED, hint hint. The anime will be releasing in 2025. I wouldn't wait though, I saw the animation, it radiated the feeling of animators chained up and unable to go home to their family until they can somehow package all arc 1 LOTM into a single season. (China trying it's hardest not to give back to LOTM for what it did for it's country every five seconds challenge) Also China is where Lord of the Mysteries was originally from(no, it is not Xianxia or anything about Young Masters and Cultivation.) So it's a lot more popular there, practically the Bible over there. The fact that the Chinese firewall(ancient Chinese gatekeeping method) couldn't block LOTM is crazy. Well, I thought there would be more but that's all I got. @@AntiKash By the way, the reason I recommend the Novel over the Anime is because the character designs seem a bit different, especially the main character. if you look up Klein Moretti, then watch the trailer, you can see a difference. And we know anime rarely fits everything from the novel. Don't worry about having trouble reading it though, the author makes it super easy, incredible descriptions, vast vocabulary that never goes over your head if you don't mind searching up a few words, very enjoyable dialogue, and lastly, it's just good.

I would agree with this take. Those three are the only isekai with meaningful characters and well written stories. The rest of isekai is still fun and enjoyable every now and then, like eminence in shadow, but for truly spectacular story writing I go to slime, re zero, and jobless.

Subaru's backstory is so precious to me because it really just showed me some stuff that i kept overlooking, it's not like there's someone dead in his backstory, or a tragic event that happened to his home, it's just purely realistic look at what it looks like to abandon life when it was gifted to you not because they want you to be something, but they want you to be yourself

I love my fantasy anime and classics like AOT one piece etc, but sad backstory’s are usually accompanied with like the whole family dying, and it’s obv not relatable as good as it is. But this hits deep, like just the way they explained growing up and all of it just damn, but then to have positive parents as well just makes it that much better, it’s all about just living ur life as tough as it could be

Re:Zero is what made me think deeper about stories. If it wasn’t for it, I wouldn’t be enjoying stuff like The Eminence in Shadows as much (Yes, unironically). The contrast is big, while the good writing is noticeable. Re:Zero is just a really good contrasting tool to judge if a show is written well or if it’s complex.
I completely agree, re zero set a high standard. It’s not easy in any way to balance a meaning and a good plot but re zero does and Ive come to appreciate shows that really manage to do that

True I just really used revived for a catchy title, but more so like “re zero stands out amongst isekai” but that titles not as good unfortunately
Even then, there was NGNL before which had a movie and people have been begging for more for ages since. Overlord was before as well and while I haven’t seen it, I know it did receive several sequel seasons. Though, perhaps, Re:zero could still be seen as the kick off even if SAO is usually credited as the one that spawned the modern isekai boom. They were kind of slow coming in the beginning only getting 1 a year or so. Although, I think, at the time, HS battle harems were all the rage during those early-mid 2010 years leading into the isekai rage.

Authorities are kind of a monkey's paw thing so while people may debate how exactly Subaru ended up with return by death what with Satella the witch of envy still being alive, the way it works definitely reflects Subaru's desires.
Echidna who wanted immense knowledge to help people gets the book of wisdom, which contains all knowledge in existence future past present you name it but she doesn't like that it strips the process of learning from that knowledge, and infinite knowledge makes it pretty much impossible to make any decisions because there's always more you don't know which could influence the result. So yeah in the same way Subaru's return by death gives him the power to be useful to others and basically a hero, but also takes away any value he feels his life has.
Exactly it goes both ways, the power definitely makes him useful but at the same time makes it feel so easy to just throw life away, it’s a pretty wild dynamic.

The only other isekai where my favorite character is the main protagonist is Eminence in Shadow and that's a parody isekai where most other characters don't have much depth. Agreed, I love Re:zero and consider it one of the best isekais of all time. There's only one single isekai that i can think of that i consider better and that is Mushoku Tensei. The way the world is built up and the flaws shown from each and every character, especially the MC that gains insane character development during the show. It just hits so right to me, the show feels so natural for some reason. I only get this "natural" feel from subaru himself. No offense to anyone who likes the sidecharacters in re:zero but i find most of them quite distant and made purely to pull subaru forward giving them this superficial vibe. Just my personal thoughts as to why i enjoy MT more than Re:Zero.

Re:Zero instead uses the isekai genre as a tool and foundation to tell a greater and deeper story. Subaru doesn't just get sent into a new world with insane powers. Name a better isekai/one that rivals Re:Zero? Easy. Lord of the Mysteries. It's less Isekai and more Transmigration, imagine Subaru's case but instead of his body someone else's, someone that died, to something beyond imagination. Imagine that curse brings the attention of the authorities, who are actually powerful and recruit him, now imagine if the main character lived in a world with unimaginable horrors, enemies that one cannot simply beat with strength or friends. Be warned, I will be, not yapping, but preaching.
(please do not read the DISCONTINUED, FAN MADE, MANHWA, too many have been lost to this, Lord of the MIDSTERIES. Just read the Novel.)
Best Mystery novel I've read, best "Isekai", best Action, BEST power system, BEST world building, Incredible characters and one of if not THE best main characters I've ever read about! The main character goes through so much and is always having to deal with stuff because of how "Weak" he is, but the cost of strength in his world is humanity😢and not the lighthearted humanity like replacing parts of the body.
The side characters are just as awesome as the main character, I have full reason to believe the only reason why all the readers love the main character so much is just because he was the one with the most focus on him. The other characters have really interesting plots and possible backstories that are never really told, a few are fleshed out really well and the rest you just have to guess at. The author does a beautiful job with not making you think characters pop out of nowhere to support/antagonize the main character.
Now the world building and power system is one of the main parts of the story. I have to say I absolutely love what the main character did with the history of the world and characters. I can't say much at all without spoiling things but it all makes sense in the end, and you end up wondering at the end "Dang, I really want to know (someone)'s backstory.." Not because of just how AWESOME of a character they are, but because of how relevant they are to the history and world building.
Now the qualms I WOULD have with a series but don't with Lord of the Mysteries.
GODS. All good isekais have gods right, but wait a second? What? Gods either being just overpowered super humans that the main character will eventually fight, or unbeatable reality benders that are only ever supporting/gag characters?
Nah, in LOTM we have deities who are unbeatable, unless from another god. The author did a really good job with the "Godhood" power system. Basically for gods, they are undeniably powerful, looking at one while not being a true deity or an "angel"(hard to explain but basically a mythical creature) will cause someone to lose control and turn into a monster(basically death). There are multiple gods in Lord of the Mysteries and there are REASONS why they want to be worshiped. Some are worshiped in an Orthodox manner, some not.
Villains. Villains in most stories are normally just there to hinder the main character and make them stronger, always just above or below the main character in terms of strength. Villains that "just happen to be stronger/the same strength" of the main character always approach the main character first, in a way that's unavoidable for the main character as well.
In LOTM, we have pretty much the same thing but the main character can't always beat them. And the "villains" always have a reason for attacking the main character, be it for his "characteristic"(part of the power system), the fact that he's a support class and easy pickings, or just for a reason that fits the character. Like with (someone), I'm pretty sure he was doing it for the giggles.
The main character also does initiate many fights, like for others characteristics or to "act"(part of the power system). He does try to stick by morals, and he does so very well. Not in a passive "I don't want to fight" way but more in a "If I attack (so and so), I will get (something bad) in the (somewhere special) by the church of (a specific god) and erased from existence because this is my 3rd offense." Something along those lines.

Yes, this is a novel. I know you manga/anime fans are sometimes illiterate and incapable of going five seconds without a fight scene. (I'm talking about you Jujutsu Kaisen fans). Though if you read this far I can either assume I amused you with my incredible eight grade writing and sense of humor, or you're interested in what I've explained about the plot so far. Final messages
1. The start is SLOW.(to some) Some called it boring(probably the Jujutsu Kaisen fans), I enjoyed it and just thought of it as a super mysterious wholesome slice of life. Which it kind of was, until that volume 1 ending, then it was a Holesome Sliced Life.(I still am recovering). People say you can skip it, terrible idea. Volume 1 is a lot of simple world building, gives you a structure of what you should understand in the series, without it you'd be lost, and not as attached to the main character, or understand his reasoning.
2. Some people have trouble visualizing characters, the Author did a great job with character descriptions, but still there are some with trouble. Thankfully there are thousands of fan arts being created DAILY(biggest LOTM fan flex). A simple search can give you a good idea of what a character looks like, or at least how people envisioned them. (poor Merlin) Do NOT use the wiki to see characters. What I did was go to google, search "Lord of the Mysteries (character name)", Then I went to images. Scrolling down a bit WILL get you spoiled, especially on the main character. Other than him you're probably good.
3. It's a NOVEL, with NO pictures whatsoever, with over 1400 chapters. To someone who wants to read it, a very welcome surprise, to someone who is considering it but would rather go find another manhwa to read, a daunting challenge that they will likely forget about. Though if you are considering reading this, just letting you know it took me a while to get into. The slow start didn't help, I was hearing everyone hype it up like The Bible 2. Of course I was coming in thinking it'll be the best part, only to be welcomed with the world building part. I was contemplating skipping this part, but I never skipped anything before and I took that as a pride. So I took a small break then came back to it with the intent that it'd be a slice of life. Yeah it got me into it, I finished volume 1, gained some scars on my heart, then started the series for real.
4. The fanmade manhwa sucked compared to the novel, the art was bad, but people that read it compared the plot to other series and still found it incredibly interesting, and was lead to the novel, this was where they were CONVERTED, hint hint. The anime will be releasing in 2025. I wouldn't wait though, I saw the animation, it radiated the feeling of animators chained up and unable to go home to their family until they can somehow package all arc 1 LOTM into a single season. (China trying it's hardest not to give back to LOTM for what it did for it's country every five seconds challenge) Also China is where Lord of the Mysteries was originally from(no, it is not Xianxia or anything about Young Masters and Cultivation.) So it's a lot more popular there, practically the Bible over there. The fact that the Chinese firewall(ancient Chinese gatekeeping method) couldn't block LOTM is crazy.

@@AntiKash By the way, the reason I recommend the Novel over the Anime is because the character designs seem a bit different, especially the main character. if you look up Klein Moretti, then watch the trailer, you can see a difference. And we know anime rarely fits everything from the novel. Don't worry about having trouble reading it though, the author makes it super easy, incredible descriptions, vast vocabulary that never goes over your head if you don't mind searching up a few words, very enjoyable dialogue, and lastly, it's just good.

Rezero didnt revive isekai genre. Tell me then any good isekai except slime, mushoku and rezero. Everything is dogshit. Rezero just proved that you can make Masterpiece out of overused trash genre
Exactly, when Re zero was first released the trope wasn't really nearly as overused and the market oversaturated as today.
I would agree with this take. Those three are the only isekai with meaningful characters and well written stories. The rest of isekai is still fun and enjoyable every now and then, like eminence in shadow, but for truly spectacular story writing I go to slime, re zero, and jobless.
Revived was mostly just for the title, but in terms of the long run I just meant rezero will be one of the faces of isekai alongside some other like jobless and so
