Hypersonic missiles are overhyped. They wouldn't be very controllable under 20,000 feet at Mach 10. They would need o slow down as they approach their target, to allow them to maintain control. The air pressure would simply be too great and make the missile unstable at lower altitudes. That is their most vulnerable flight envelope.
They can go into a low orbit and drop straight down on target full speed , just float into position and wham. We knew they can be stopped but several at a time would overwhelm the defense system quickly.

Maneuvering at hypersonic speeds is not something easily done. Fair for stationary targets but mobile targets is a different story. Not to mention that at hypersonic speeds everything is red hot. Wings under stress of maneuvering while red hot is quite a problem. Also the plasma envelope around it makes it difficult for it's guidance system to detect movement of it's target and change direction. Hypersonic technology is mostly HYPErsonic. Drop a handful of BB's or ball bearings in it's flight path and it's finished. It's own speed will shred it. Something like a missile with a proximity fuse would end everything.

light travels faster than radio waves. speed is not the issue at all plasma is. The radars used to detect stealth are old slow ones, the ones used to shoot things down are much faster. The old radar has longer detection range but isnt fast enought to guide a missile to the target.

The Kinzhal missile is just an air launch ballistic missile equivalent to US GAM-87 Skybolt which was developed in the late 1950s and has better stats than Russia's Kinzhal. You fellas know that it's most likely NOT going to stay hypersonic for most of its flight path. Not even close if doesn't have secondary motors or propulsion system, like a ram jet/scram jet like the US has been working on Forever, and the Meteor, Euro medium range AAM, missile. Kinzhal IS a ballistic missile ! It only has very limited movement , its not like a cruises missile or HGV which can avoid interception to a degree .... and as with all it has to slow down to supersonic speeds the lower it gets. light travels faster than radio waves. speed is not the issue at all plasma is. The radars used to detect stealth are old slow ones, the ones used to shoot things down are much faster. The old radar has longer detection range but isnt fast enought to guide a missile to the target.

Its coming at you fast, too fast to act evasively. All you have to do is calculate a point of interception along its assumed flight path. As long as you can pick it up far enough out you obviously have time to intercept.

I don't know why everybody seems surprised or don't believe the news. The Kinzhal missile is just an air launch ballistic missile equivalent to US GAM-87 Skybolt which was developed in the late 1950s and has better stats than Russia's Kinzhal.
The more difficult missiles to shoot down are HGV(hypersonic glide vehicle) or HCM(hypersonic cruise missile powered by scramjet engine).

You fellas know that it's most likely NOT going to stay hypersonic for most of its flight path. Not even close if doesn't have secondary motors or propulsion system, like a ram jet/scram jet like the US has been working on Forever, and the Meteor, Euro medium range AAM, missile. For those that don't know, and there seems to be plenty here.. Hypersonic only means above Mach 5. The 1960's US Phoenix missile was nearly Mach 5. The bigger and faster a missile is...the more chance it has to miss...get it ?? I'm a punny guy...I know. There's no guarantee that it actually flies at Mach 10, or if it does, that it can maintain high hypersonic speed. Almost all missiles burn their motor up in the first few seconds of flight and have to fly on momentum and trajectory to their target. They slow down and lose energy quite fast.
It is unlikely that an old Patriot US air defense system would be able to down a modern hypersonic Russian missile. The Patriot system was designed primarily to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles and other airborne threats in the terminal phase of their trajectory, such as aircraft and cruise missiles. While the Patriot system has been upgraded over the years to improve its capabilities, it was not designed to intercept hypersonic missiles, which travel at speeds greater than Mach 5 and can maneuver in flight to avoid interception.

Kinzhal IS a ballistic missile ! It only has very limited movement , its not like a cruises missile or HGV which can avoid interception to a degree .... and as with all it has to slow down to supersonic speeds the lower it gets. Depending what missile type was used there is no reason why it couldn't take it down.
