I remember renting this on DVD and watching it with a friend one night. Movie was over, we let it run through the credits while we talked because we were so bored neither of us could be bothered to turn it off. After a while the DVD screensaver thing came on after the movie auto-shut off and we kept talking. Then the DVD player shut off and the TV blared white noise out of no where and nearly made us piss ourselves. The scariest thing this movie did was bore us enough until my TV gave us a jump scare.
The trailer was so good! I kept expecting to have the character of "Ruth Baxter" introduced in an E.V.P voice or the "Susie Tomlinson grandmother" roll.
Ive seen this film only once. I thought it was gonna be a freaky ass horror movie. I remember being miserably disappointed after the credits rolled. Good to see you back Deacon. Hope to see you more often in the coming weeks.
I know this is a little late but normally EVP isn’t just a passive recording. Most of the time people are asking questions or otherwise trying to provoke communication. I think that’s why the medium said it’s like a ouija board. Thanks for the review! Edit: in fact you said it yourself at about 19:30
Enter: Pareidolia - the tendency to interpret a vague stimulus as something known to the observer, such as seeing shapes in clouds, seeing faces in inanimate objects or abstract patterns, or hearing hidden messages in music.
Hi Deusdeacon. I discovered your RUclips videos in the month or so before you posted this. Glad to see that such an insightful reviewer is still going strong!
For the longest time I thought that this film was part of the Pulse franchise. Shows how memorable both of those franchises were. Anyway, welcome back dude! Missed your reviews.
That's the movie I'm thinking of! Thank you, I keep waiting for the weird static demons to climb through a portal in a server room and getting confused
Not sure if anyone realizes this. But the medium is the lady from Final Destination 2 who died via spike through the head on the driver's seat of her car...
Nice, new video by one of the best reviewers I found on RUclips! Thanks, Deusdeacon; I don't always agree with you, but damn if your videos are not very well done, interesting and full to the brim of awesome facts and detail analysis.
Can't remember you saying but a big point of the film that makes it compelling is the fact that the main character misreads pretty much everything and though his actions in trying to save the woman at the end are noble it ultimately leads to his death. A big clue for this is his visit to the medium where she tells him the difference between her and him is she has protection from the evil spirits from her own spirit guide and he has none from using EVP. We also learn from her that he is misreading the EVPs and Messages. What he believes to be a message from Anna in the present telling him to 'Go Now' and save the people on his tapes is in fact itself a future event of HIS impending death. This plays out when he gets to the building site and Anna appears to him how she does on the tape, and her message to him wasn't for him to 'go now' and save the people but to 'go now' and get out of the site, a warning to him not proceed, however he misinterprets it and he pays the price for it.
Precisely 👏 Do you think the construction worker pushed him to his death? I think he did because he walked back whistling, suggesting he pushed John off the ledge.
Far more watchable than Nostalgia Critic. Good example is NC calling The Mummy (1999) a bad movie which he tends to compare too much to the 1920s original. Whereas Deusdaecon has a much more technical and more fair review. Even goes as far to say that the movie was actually good.
I love that vintage late 90's UI at 11:56. Nothing like a poorly compressed jpeg of brushed steel pattern to really bring me back to the days of trying to find a player that can handle the roughly 700 proprietary video codecs floating around the internet at the time.
I used to fear warching this movie....but you definitely put the bs in perspective.and I Appreciate your prospective and you definitely reviewed it fairly! You deserve more views sir!!!
I think the husband was trying to come to terms with his grief, and it can cause people to have bouts of extreme rage/despair, as they can't come to terms with what's happened, and are trying to rationalise it to themselves. I've had this happen to myself in that past, and as such i still haven't moved on from that traumatic event, but i had a similar response, when someone pressed me about the subject, where i felt like they had stepped into my personal space, and i needed to forcibly push them away. The rest of the film goes into crazyville from that point onwards, and if it wasn't for some incredible acting from Michael Keaton, i think it wouldn't have had the punch that it did, as i still reference this film from time to time, as it is still a work of fiction worth watching.
Enjoying this review. Someone could literally understand the movie without seeing it but watching your review. Very well done. That said, I found Price's death eery and sinister looking. However, it was bizarre as to how he died and why the video tape was wrapped around his neck and what looked like some was also stuffed in his mouth. Kind of reminded me of the deaths in the movie the ring. Regarding the end of the movie, it appears the construction worker killed John rather than the 3 silhouettes from the white noise. Because the construction worker walks back to Mary whistling. For him to have gone off screen and walk back whistling with confidence indicates it was the construction worker who pushed John off the ledge. However, it seems the evp influences good (John) and bad (construction worker) people to do good or bad depending on the voices being good vs bad as illustrated in the movie.
we had a seminar on EVP once where it became clear that if you listen to any short segment of (sometimes filtered) white noise (or other randomized sound sources) for an extended period of time you will start to hear voices. It's just the brain trying to find patterns that resemble language in a highly unstructured soundwave. Putting subtitles underneath a short clip of noise can be even more suggestive because you are already priming the listener to hear that phrase in the sound.
@@misschris325 no it was actually on the history of radio as part of the sound studies department of my school. EVP was just something we dealt with for a few sessions as it also symbolizes the kindof spiritistic qualities people ascribe to new forms of media. As I am studying at an media art school, our professor was mostly concerned with how media can trigger people's imagination (both in terms of creativity and in terms of the paranormal).
This is one of the more obscure 2000s horror films, it was a pretty big deal when it came out as it was basically Michael Keaton's return to the big screen. Nowadays if you ask people, hardly anyone knows about this film. This film sucks in my opinion, this film deserves to live in the realm of obscurity.
3:30 Yeah, but Edison's not really known for his honesty. 4:35 A ghost movie with Michael Keaton? Beetlejuice better make an appearance, otherwise I'm going to riot! XD 23:30 Reminds me a little of a Scooby-Doo plot! XD
Subscribed today.....love the reviews and your voice! But the I like the background with the shelves....... the yellow washes you out. Thanks for the videos.
That tea is what I call "Cat Piss" a crime here in the North lol. White Noise was a film I so looked forward too only to be disappointed when I finally got round to seeing it, as it had some good ideas just executed poorly.
Ritual. Ouija boards you need the board (or a piece of paper with the letters and numbers) and a person to ask questions. EVP you need to press the record button and listen for something to speak. Both are inviting something in to talk. I think I remember a few superstitions and rituals surrounding mirrors as well. Like a Victorian ritual that had a woman standing in front of a mirror in the dark with a candle asking who she would fall in love with. On Halloween of course.
Holy shit I just realized that I was misremembering the name of a movie as white noise. I was thinking of the movie Frequency why my brain did this I don't know for sure but !! Thanks for introducing me to the real white noise movie lmao
I’m new to your channel but I love your videos. I’ve always been fascinated by the ideas and weird circumstances behind supernatural premises such as this. 🤔 But yeah this movie went off the rails towards the end. Still a guilty pleasure of mine. 😂 Can’t wait to see your other vids!
This was scary as shit as a kid. I used to listen to the radio every night when going to bed....after watching this, that night and probably for about two weeks, I stop playing that mf at night.
Receiving a phone call from "a dead person" is not rare these days. Phone companies are supposed to wait three months before releasing the number to be reassigned, but they do it the day after being notified thinking no one will notice. Mother got a shock when she got a call from father two weeks after his funeral: turns out it was the AC repairman with his "new" phone number he got earlier that week. Fucking Verizon.
Most unbelievable part of this movie is the foreman hardhat clean and spotless... where is their vision board of orientation stickers stuck all over the hardhat. Construction workers covet their hard hat sticker work. The more stickers the more experience.
I'm at 2:00 in the video...It all has to do with priming. Show the audience what they should hear in the noise, and they will hear it. I don't know if you cover that later, just thought I'd drop this now.
The comparison between evp and ouija is that sometimes when you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back. I think that is literally the extent of the connection.
Have any of your followers found anything on Angela Brown? Maybe with this video out, someone might be able to uncover this mini mystery better. EVP has always scared the hell out of me, so I will decline in the research.
If you think that cops don't rule obvious murders as suicides/accidents all the time, I've got really bad news for you. On a happier note: I'm stoked you uploaded another movie review!
In the early to mid 2000's, the mainstream Horror genre fell flat on its face, and I was there to see it happen, working as an Usher in the biggest Cinema in my hometown. Nothing beat seeing the look of bewilderment and disappointment on the faces of the patrons as they walked out of White Noise... except for being involved in a riot that happened during a screening of the incredibly bad Grudge 2. My god. Mainstream Horror is still a mess.

That story is much more interesting than the movie.
@Jairo Ray so you just happened to find this comment that conveniently made the same hour you saw it under,a one year old comment huh
3 years later, this comment is still easy to find. It's not that hard to believe.
The trailer was so good! I kept expecting to have the character of "Ruth Baxter" introduced in an E.V.P voice or the "Susie Tomlinson grandmother" roll.
Bloody hell! Deacon, my good man! You are back! Huzzah!

Yeah! This is the way I like to start off my day! Good to see you friend!
Hi Deusdeacon. I discovered your RUclips videos in the month or so before you posted this. Glad to see that such an insightful reviewer is still going strong!
Im glad you stuck around through that lack of content time, videos should hopefully be coming through fairly regularly now.

I've only seen the first Pulse movie with Kristen Bell. I own it AND White Noise AND Stay Alive. Lol
Not sure if anyone realizes this. But the medium is the lady from Final Destination 2 who died via spike through the head on the driver's seat of her car...
I recognize her
She was also in _Battlestar Galactica,_ _Bates Motel,_ _Millennium,_ and _Da Vinci's Inquest_ because... Vancouver.

I'm American and I make better tea than that
@@raymondhamill270 you sir have earned my respect.
I saw this in the theater and I remember people laughing at the jumpscare ending. It’s my most vivid memory of this whole film.
Welcome back my good sir so glad your back missed your reviews
Truly do enjoy your reviews, great mix of humour, informed opinion, and technical insight. Extremely watchable!

Yay! He's back! How was your one man show? Watching your review was like watching a good movie, never a disappointment
I love your research and explanations, so in depth!
Mate you deserve way more subs, your one of my favourite film reviewers keep up the good work buddy
Love you forever. Deusdaecon
Hell yes, more review content! Damn good to see you back dude!
Watched this three times since it posted this morning, favorite movie reviewer by far. Perfect start to the weekend! Thank you 💖
Huzzah a new review has risen to the surface from the dark depths of youtubes over saturation of bad content.
I love that you commented about the tea. It’s wonderful and appropriate.
I’m glad you’re back doing reviews!!
Good to see you back!
Thank god (or whatever) your back I had nearly lost hope, my good man.

The most frighting thing about this film is the tea. I bet to add insult to injury, she added the milk in first.
great review as usual ;-)
Good to see some more reviews 😁😁😁
The tea scene, she wouldn't be able to hold it for that long like she was if It was freshly brewed

Suggestion for future video. Commentary on Tea portrayal in film. Lol
your probably joking but thats not a bad idea
That tea is what I call "Cat Piss" a crime here in the North lol. White Noise was a film I so looked forward too only to be disappointed when I finally got round to seeing it, as it had some good ideas just executed poorly.
Yep, that tea is disgusting! Also, this movie is sloppy. We have four dead people-why is John not being investigated as a murder suspect?
From a mechanics perspective, evp and Ouija are simular in that in both, questions are asked of the dead.
Ritual.
Ouija boards you need the board (or a piece of paper with the letters and numbers) and a person to ask questions.
EVP you need to press the record button and listen for something to speak.

Releasing this dud in jan 2005 made studios rethink about releasing horror movies in jan cause it was a success.
