Fyi anyone doing this you must get all 5 blue coins or else it won't work. Also fyi don't go jumping into the silver pool where mario gets his metal cap looking for extra coins ..it will bring your coin count back to 0.
For anyone needing help with this star, I found a pretty decent pathway to get all the coins. I recommend getting all of the stars first to familiarize yourself with this cave, since it is hard to navigate the first few times around. I’m using the 3DAS version, so people playing this on the N64, take this with a grain of salt. Here it is in case you want to use it or even create your own way with it: 1. Kill the scuttlebug in front of you. Then go to the right and kill the scuttlebug that spawns (you can only get coins from these spawning scuttlebugs once). Then get the coins in the passage and go through the door. 2. Jump and ground pound at the right time to go down (or take the pole as it’s safer) then find the two scuttlebugs in the area and kill them. 3. Get the coins in the hazy maze entrance and go down. Defeat the three fly guys scattered around the maze and defeat the four bats. Ground pound the blue coins block and collect the blue coins (don’t worry if you don’t get the last 3 or 4, you can still get the star if you miss them). Note: It’s much easier if you have metal Mario, but this is possible without him as well. 4. Backflip and/or triple jump to the door above the spot the blue coins led you to (the amazing exit door). Kill the two bats, go up the elevator, and go through the door. You’ll find yourself at some red fencing. Double jump and hold the jump button to hold on, then move to the rightmost path and get the coins. Make your way back, go back to the elevator, and take it back down to re-enter the haze. 5. Go back to where the bats were and backflip and/or triple jump to the door (the navigating the toxic maze door). Watch out for the fire as you kill the two bats, get the coins and make your way back to the haze. 6. Find the grassy steps to exit the haze and to go back to the work elevator room. Go up the stairs to the elevator and use it to get the first 4 coins (3 in boxes, one on the grass mountain in the corner). After that, take the moving platform to get the remaining 4 coins, or long jump to the grass area, get the 2 coins there, then ride the platform for the last two. 7. After getting all 8 red coins, go down the hallway to the elevator that takes you to the black hole / rolling rocks room. You can kill the scuttlebug if you want, but you don’t have to. Make your way along the rolling rocks, collecting the coins there. Go through the door and get the coins circling around the 1-up box. 8. Take the elevator down to the underground lake. Swim to Dorrie and guide it to the island in the middle where the 1st star is. Collect the coins around this star and you get the 100 coins star! After collecting this, exit the level to go back to the main room of the castle, or if you have other stars to collect in HMC or in the basement, collect the star. This path might seem a little on the long side for some, but this is what worked for me. I would say the hardest part is staying alive in the haze. Thanks for reading and I hope you get this star!
To make sm64 more challenging I am palying it again with my Switch console and the aim is to collect ALL THE COINS inside the level. And I can say that this one in particular has been the most difficult level to complete 100% with all the coins between the first 10 levels of the game. If not in general in pair with the last one with raimbows and flying carpets. My record is 139 coins in Hazy maze cave, but one particular bat (the one in the area with the rolling rocks) has been a pain. Especially since it keeps flying above the slides next to the hole. After taking its coin (it went well for me with a ratio 1:10 of the same gameplay) then in the same match you have to take down the two spinning eyes, where the ground to make them rotate is almost nothing) which isn't easy at all. Generally I go for these first leaving the orange spiders and the red coins as last to catch in order to have a source of energy in case the first attempts go wrong. After the bat and the two big eyes I suggest to go immedatly for the blue coins unlocked by pressing the blue block in the gas maze. If you manage to complete in the same match all these 3 hard things you can go for the record of 139. Keeping an eye to not fall when you have to grab the ones just below the grid without relasing the jump button. Playing this way make you experience the real depth of super mario 64 levels. And hazy maze cave has been one of the harderst :)
When I was ten years old I had 119 stars. This one always eluded me but I decided to go back and beat the entire game. Thanks for the tutorial. I finally beat this annoying level after 12 years.
A helpful tip is there ARE more coins in this level in case you miss a few though they’re a little annoying to get. Down in the underground lake where you got the first star there are coins surrounding it, and there’s also coins through the door where you hit the switch for metal Mario.
Wait there’s coins in the underground lake? Also I don’t remember any coins around the area for metal Mario. If there is that works perfectly for the path I’m taking. I’m playing on 3DAS so it might be different, but still. Edit: you’re right about the coins surrounding the star, but still don’t see any around the metal Mario stage. But that was very helpful, thank you!! Now I know if I miss some of the blue coins I can still get the star, that is if I manage to not die in the haze lol
imsecretlyacookie I misremembered about the metal Mario sorry! Metal Mario takes you out of the hazy maze cave, so you wouldn’t be able to get the star. I totally forgot! I’m glad I could help you get the coins around the star though!
4:08 don't risk this. Just get all the red coins and take out one of the eyeball foes in the elevator section then follow the rest of the video from there and you'll get the star by the time you get the line of coins by the rolling boulders.
@@freddiemercury1958 The star will spawn above the red grate, making it spawn above the red grate, which makes it inside a ceiling, which stops Mario from getting it.

I'm pretty sure you can still get 100 coins without the blue coin bonus... But you have to kill the eyes in the red coin room...
