But the most baffling thing to me is that some people literally buy the games and expect them to be better where there's a very clear pattern of 4+ games (starting from Let's Go in Gen 7) having less content and less stability then any previous one. The worst part is that each successive game sells better, but brings us all to the new lows. But the people who KNOW that the games are going downhill are still buying them! I could at least get the casuals, because they don't know shit and wouldn't know a good Pokemon game from stuff like Pokemon Dash, but people who are supposed to be fans of the series shouldn't be swallowing the latest trash solely because of the yet another cute starter trio or a box legendary. It's just disgraceful. And don't get me started on the retards who DEFEND this latest bout of idiocy. They should get out of the Gamefreak church, because that is like a goddamn religion for them. It must be - because if that was Bethesda or Blizzard putting this trash out, we all know they'd be deservingly shat on by everyone, instead of people from the lowest casuals to freakin' Joe Merrick going on like "I don't see anything bad, ever" (despite the game literally glitching on them right as they say it) and "you're just toxic" (it's, like, their two NPC-programmed phrases).

Because only this will cause the company bigwigs to at least purge everyone who failed and maybe learn something from this, too - and maybe with extended times and some new blood (Gamefreak are 2-D developers. They are ancient in their design philosophy and outdated skillsets, hence the playing-it-safe (we never got a shakeup to the Pokemon formula, actually, since maybe Gen 3 adding legendaries to the plot) and the dogshit design since Gen 6), Gamefreak can finally become an actually good developer.

For me, it was Black 2; I enjoyed Unova.
I listened to the awesome soundtrack.
I starred in most of the movies at Pokestar studios.
I fought on the battle subway, switching up my playstyle whenever I got bored of one rail-line, and felt like doing double battles, or rotation battles or whatever.
I rode the Ferris Wheel and partook in Poke Musicals in Nimbasa.
I collected medals and journeyed through the sewers to find the hidden section of Castelia that was cut off from the rest of the city.
I fought against the Pokemon equivalent of PETA (anybody remember those hypocritical jerks who preached treating animals right, but abused and killed just as many to make their 'Save-A-Life' commercials, and force their ideals on people?) after they froze half the city, and climbed the Victory Road, getting beaten down but always getting back up, to hear the awesome Elite Four VGM (which was basically 'You Are Gonna Die and Love It' in music form), before finally challenging Iris to become the Unova League Champion.
      I loved it all.
The variety. The Pokemon. The dramatic narrative. The awesome music.

They called _Gen V_ BAD?!?! *DID NONE OF YOU GUYS PLAY THE PROCEEDING GENS?!?!*
      Hmmph! 😡🤬😤😠
At the very least, I felt vindicated by the disappointment of longtime Pokemon fans when they saw what they had to deal with for Gens 8 and 9.
I don't hate the Pokemon so much as I do the bland non-existent story, the extremely linear progression between the Stadiums, the ridiculously short pacing, the lack of anything to do outside of camping or beating up Pokemon in the Wild Area (and given what Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee are supposedly like, where you don't even get to battle, you just huck pokeballs at them like it's THAT SHITTY AR GAME THAT GOT PEOPLE RUN OVER BY CARS OR ARRESTED FOR TRESPASSING ON PRIVATE PROPERTY BECAUSE THEY WERE CHASING FUCKING BUTTERFREE ; AND YOU MESS UP THE FIRST NINE TIMES BECAUSE FOR ACTUAL POKEMON PLAYERS, NOT CASUALS, IT DIDN'T *USED* TO REQUIRE ME SHAKING A STUPID IPHONE LIKE A BABY RATTLE, AND HAVING TO ADD POKEMON I DIDN'T WANT TO MY TEAM, FORCING ME TO DO THE DAMN POKEDEX THAT NOBODY DOES, they took away even _that_ bit of catharsis, expecting me to get carpal tunnel and a cracked switch screen from what was supposed to be an "enjoyable" experience, for the "immersion"; I wish I could tell whoever's bright idea that was to shove it up their ass and then fire themselves... out of a howitzer into the sun) .
[ _Takes A Deep Breath After Nearly Forgetting To Breathe In The Midst of My Rage-Fueled Rant_ ]
... If this is the future, please, please, _PLEASE_ let me go back to the past; I'd rather die happy, with my memories than be forced to adapt to a future founded on shitty compromises and increasingly dumb, un-fun features!
I'm sobbing right now, thinking about how my Pokemon's gone forever. They'll fuck up the Gen V remake; they'll turn it into an abomination! It'll strip away everything that made it enjoyable and turn it into a mediocrity fest! And there's nothing I can do about it!😔😟😢😭😭😭

In defense of ILCA, they released the concept art for early BDSP and it show that wanted to make a better game that’s similar to what we see in Legends Arceus and had crazy concept arts for what the game could have been (from here they weren’t fully not transparent on what happened but I’m just putting out my little hypothetical based on how companies sometimes work) but then it appears Gamefreak stepped in and took those ideas to make Legends Arceus while leaving ILCA high and dry forcing them to literally port over the original ds games, which the base of the code was 1 for 1 with, but add a small amount of extra features so it’s not completely the same game. I know you said you didn't really care about the national dex issue but it really does sum up a major issue with that new games. The lack of care, especially for the old fans, and a lack of effort and competency. I can see how adding specific spawning area for pokemon and making sure they aren't bugged or their modules don't jank into the ground for every pokemon is a lot of work. but in a franchise built on this legacy of taking your old team through the games for literally decades the fact only the bare effort was put in to adding some of the older pokemon is crazy to me. Like, surely by this point they don't custom makes each pokemon model and stat profile for every game. By now you would expect them to have a central pokemon database, and create some kind of system where you can easily port them into the new games. It should be as simple as drag and drop. I'd be fine with a limited spawn list if you could still bring every pokemon into the game, bc if you have to custom build every single pokemon profile you are already creating way too much work for yourself even without a national dex. Dexit is either laziness, or a massively unoptimized work flow that hasn't changed in 2 decades

      @tamerkoh 7 месяцев назад +1

@@The73MPL4R I'll throw my hat in this ring and say I preferred the 3rd versions instead of the DLC model. I know it sounds crazy, but let me explain...
With the third versions, it was not just a chance to ADD content like DLC does, but it was also the chance to FIX the content in the base game. They only ever treat the DLC now as additive, but Crystal, Emerald and Platinum didn't JUST add things, they also FIXED the base games and became the definitive versions.
Crystal: Besides the quality of life improvements, such as area title cards, being able to play as Kris and animated Pokemon sprites, it also adjusted some encounter tables to get some of the mon easier and earlier. Sneasel, for example, isn't just a post-game mon anymore, but is available in the Ice Path now. Crystal also actually enhanced the graphics some more, by making places look more polished: Burned Tower actually looks like a ruined building on the outside now, instead of just a normal house. Ice Path actually looks like a crystalline ice cavern, instead of just a lighter grey cave.
Emerald: Besides the animated Pokemon re-introduction, this is the first major instance of the main gameplay experience being affected. Instead of just fighting one of the teams and the other being relegated to background support, you fight both teams. Rayquaza has actual involvement in the story now (glorified babysitter for Kyogre and Groudon, lol), and the progression was also altered slightly with the gyms in the middle. A whole lot of new mon to get, and the Battle Frontier is one of the largest pieces of end-game content to come from a game since the whole second region of Kanto in GSC.
Platinum: Arguably the 3rd version that was most desparately needed, because base Diamond/Pearl are really fucking slow games. Not just story pacing wise, but I mean the actual engine: there's a delay in DP after everything that happens in battle (selecting a move, the pokeball indicators sliding in, a mon coming out/fainting, etc.), and it wastes a ton of your time over the course of the game because of it all adding up. Platinum not only removed those delays and sped up the engine (surfing is literally more than double the speed it was in DP), but also fixed some serious roster issues with DP as well. The only two fire types a player could get before the postgame, was Infernape (if you chose Chimchar) and Pontya, and that's IT. Platinum added way more mon to the dex you can get before the postgame, and fixed this issue, as well as the important trainer teams (Volkner, Flint) that were affected by such droughts in options. Not to mention, it also heavily buffed the postgame and the story, because Cyrus barely shows up in DP, but is encountered much more frequently in Platinum. And the post-game story with the remnants of Galactic and Charon.
They'll never use DLC to make these sort of adjustments to the base games, so if the base games suck now like Sword and Shield, they'll always suck and won't be redeemed like Platinum redeemed Sinnoh. Also there's the problem of preservation; the third version having all the adjustments baked into it means it'll always be accessible as long as you have a copy of the game. Meanwhile, the DLC will be unavailable once they shut those servers down, if you haven't already bought it, so the game will forever remain in its incomplete state.

I like how said 2025 there at the end, because time is really what's missing. So much of the issues in recent games are missing finishing touches. In SwSh, it was the weird level curve (the wild area doesn't seem to factore into it at all if you look at the level difference between the starting town and the first town right after the wild area) as well as the big climax of the story having no actual inciting incident (suggesting the script was pushed out too early). In SV, it's all on the technical side - so much optimization and finetuning that probably falls under QA just wasn't done. Or just simply the time to experiment with new conditions. Most studios get room to experiment and improve inbetween projects or as part of the process by playing around with ideas. This doesn't seem to be the case for Gamefreak.
I recently watched the Did You Know Gaming episode about Ken Sugimori (I'm an illustrator and his early work influenced my development a great deal) and that just made me sad, because it pretty much confirmed my suspisions. There's only so much the studio can do besides Pokemon with such a tight schedule - both skill acquisition and actual polish.
Heck, even Arceus has issues with its presentation being rather simplistic in most places - something that majorly holds back SV's story as well. It *can* be good - the plots written for that game actually sound pretty intriguing on their own, but stuff like the Team STAR bullying plot is told in these god awful flashback dialogues instead of something befitting the subject matter. That's all stuff that could have been done with more time, I'm sure.

Such a shame the franchise has gone the way it has. I grew up playing gens 5, 6 and 7 and even middle school me could feel the strings starting to come apart in Sun and moon. While Legends was a step in the right direction, it still was definitely not worth $80 (especially since Xenoblade and Zelda are available on the same system for comparable prices and Genshin Impact is “free”). At the end of the day, just like Disney, the franchise is literally too big to fail. Why should GameFreak spend the time and money to make a better game, when millions of consumers are happy to pay premiums to eat their shit off the floor? Despite all the backlash, nothing has changed and we shouldn’t hold out hope for change.

Imo, Sun and Moon were fine. They weren't as good, but you could tell through the game itself as well as interviews that they put like, fukking *passion* into it. And actual *time.*
And I know people shit on gen 6, but they did give us ORAS, which to this day feels like "Pokémon: Definitive Edition." I dunno, something about it just feels right
Past gen 7 though, I began to see a stark drop off rather than "they're shifting gears a bit."
Like, it felt like they wanted you to forget their past works. Like tell me, how many cameos were there in Black2&White2? How many cameos were there in USUM? A lot? Great!
Now tell me why in SWSH, we don't even see fukking LOOKER. You know, THE throwback character.
There was no heart. And the story was so ill. Gen 1-4 stories were good, but 5-7's focused more on a deeper message, and I appreciated them a lot. (Questioning the truth was the theme of gen 5, the beauty of life for gen 6, and past trauma & the balance of nature in gen 7.)
In SWSH, the story isn't good, and they don't even try to incorporate a message into it. It's just "flashy mechanic go ARRRGRGRGRGRG!"
The music is also mid. And tell me why, in a place where you hunt the Legendary Pokémon, you don't play ANY of their themes.
Again, I feel like they want us to forget what we used to have.
My final gripe with the "new" series is that the locations are so fricking boring, or they effectively don't exist. I used to look at things like Croagunk and go "oh look, he hails from the Great Marsh!", at Munna and go "oh she's from the Dreamyard, ain't she?", or at Dhelmise and go "what a nice fish-up at Seafolk Village!".
Meanwhile, you find Rolycoly in a place titled *"Galar Mine No. 2".*
What. The. Fuk. That's not a location, that's a chemical compound. It doesn't feel special at all. All the locations feel like "just places" instead of places with history and some lore.
I remember Brooklet Hill, Petalburg Woods, Reflection Cave, Desert Resort, Iron Island, and Lake of Rage all at the ring of a bell. On the contrary, I couldn't tell you the name of any Paldea location if my life depended on it.
And the thing I REALLY don't like is that in gen 9 the franchise is curving more towards realism. We've seen other franchises like Street Fighter and Final Fantasy succumb to such fates, and I'm *extremely* worried about this franchise going forward. SWSH was awful, but at least it kept its signature anime-looking art style. I don't know what gen 9 is supposed to be, and honestly, I'm too afraid to ask.
This is making me extremely worried for gen 5 and 6 remakes, since their respective artstyles are what *makes* them so special.

The simplest explanation as to how they can get away with putting out such mediocre titles out there despite fan outcry, is that the series is good at making new fans that they don't need to listen to the old ones to stay afloat.
Like hell, if the only Pokemon content that existed had been Red and Blue? I'm sure the game wouldn't have had nearly as much staying power worldwide, it could have fizzled out really easy. It was the fact it released alongside an anime that made the games be the secondary source of income. Like, I sure as hell did not have a Game Boy when I was 2 years old, but I certainly did have a Pikachu plush and a rubber Squirtle for bathtime.
It's a shame that them being so lucrative means the games are secondary to their success. And frankly, I'll be blunt here, I only like the games because I liked the anime, as RPGs I find them frustratingly limited (4 move slots lol), but I generally enjoy the universe more through the TV show rather than the actual game, I can feel the battles better in motion than in this limited format. I think Miyamoto was kinda right, that Pokemon is on the wrong genre

Not saying that you're wrong in the video (because you barely touched on this point), but the idea that "Pokemon (or any X franchise) is bad because it is formulaic and repetitive across the games" is a garbage narrative parroted by pseuds because it is low-hanging fruit. Time and time again it is proven that many people want trivial/aesthetic variants of the same games. Look at the ROM hacking community: fans wanted to play the same Gen 3 games over and over with only new regions to explore, maybe some hackmon and some other minor variations. They wanted it SO MUCH that the community cracked the games at the ASM-level and made those games themselves.
This isn't just isolated to Pokemon. Monster Hunter spent most of its history releasing essentially the same game with more content and minor system tweaks, and people went crazy for it. Super Smash Brothers just adds new characters and stages (yes there are gameplay feel differences but people tune into the Nintendo Directs to see the additional content, not how many frames you save when L-cancelling). Mario Kart is the highest selling game on the switch and I can't think of a franchise which changes less across releases. Yes people do dunk on these games for being rehashes, but "being a rehash" is effectively a non-complaint when it is an objective fact that this is literally ONLY what people want. Typically these franchises end up ruining their games as soon as they try something new for no reason.

Awesome video and well said. The biggest thing that gets to me as a Pokémon fan, is watching Pokémon not learn from mistakes, or giving up on good ideas.
There are a ton of games of multiple genres that are "graphically behind" or intentionally retro looking. Even for games with good graphics, I might turn them down for performance like in Overwatch or other FPS games. I don't care about graphics if the gameplay loop is good enough.
A game like Octopath Traveler 2 might make some people turn up their noses because of the pixel art. But that game has charm, has polish, improves on the last game, expands the combat system, takes consumer feedback.
Pokémon's battle mechanics and battling when competitively playing are fun and great. I love the Area Zero ending. I like that we have a school and classes that finally explain mechanics. Good Toby Fox music. But this is stuff that is expected and the norm. So if this the standard, expectation, the other stuff drags it down. Games should feel good and if you've played a variety of quality games, there will be a lot of times where Scarlet and Violet don't feel good. The loading, the menus, the tera raids, the lag, the uncomfortably long dialogs that say nothing for hours. It made me feel like I was dealing with Swordward and Shieldbert again. (Worst part of sword and shield)

I have for a long while though that ORAS was the last good pokemon game. I might need to replay Legends Arceus, that might be up with my standards.
BDSP are objectively bad. I have my big issues with Diamond and Pearl (and haven't played platinum, although i dont know how a 3rd version game would fix enough issues for me to be like "oh this is ok now" for me) but BDSP adds modern day Pokemon issues. Pokemon XY? Why did the plot try to sympasize with Team Flare after their defeat? Something that saves it and most Pokemon games for me is the post game, where I'm able to work on the pokedex and grabbing items and exploring parts of the region that i didn't have before. XY barely passes for me. USUM are ones i need to actually enter the post game again to see, but i remember that being its highlight. Sword and Shield didn't really have post game. And then Scarlet and Violet have 0. 0 post game. Having nothing to do except dex, shiny hunting (which is a whole other thing i won't bring up right now), and grind tera shards and money. Its basically as much post game as Red and Blue, because it's just Mewtwo/Cerulean Cave are a thing and thats it.
If i weren't a competitive player i wouldn't have bought the DLC for Violet. And i hate how Kerian was potrayed. Straight up he's on the Autism Spectrum just like me, and I remember when he punched the statue area wall that the disloyal 3 revive from, i punched my bed, I was so pissed. I don't want people to take away from the Teal Mask that people on the spectrum are all like him, or at least what people think of him on the outside.

I knew what it was back when I got into it. It was not going to be great but very much a "Proof of concept" of what a 3D Pokémon can look like. It was very much needed for Gamefreak to learn the ropes with an entire new dimension and using models instead of sprites.
And it paid off. Once they got around to OR/AS, the potential of the new 3D has been put to full use. I'll never play X/Y over OR/AS, but I'll always be aware that without X/Y, we wouldn't have had a foundation to build OR/AS upon.

I enjoyed my time with the game, and I wanted to see what the DLC is like, but as much as I liked the story of Teal Mask... it should've been free. $35 is WAAAAAAAY too much money for ONLY TWO DLC adventures on a game that's already $60. After Sun & Moon, I was getting over Pokemon. I thought to myself that the next game had better have some big improvements for me to get the next one. And right at the start of the sword and shield marketing they announce they aren't even including all of the pokemon. So not only did they NOT imporve the game they decided "fuck it, we can't even do the bare minimum of having Pokemon in the Pokemon game." At this point the franchise deserves to be burned to the ground and have everyone collectively spit on its ashes.
Edit: I disagree with the last 1/3rd of the video. Pokemon should be Pokemon, not Dark Souls. The way to fix the franchise is to make good Pokemon games, not fundamentally change what Pokemon games are. Rom hacks and fan games prove that the issue isn't the core gameplay of pokemon.
I also don't think that it's fine to just say "If you like eating dog shit, that's fine" because saying that things will never get better. Pokemon has been on a downwards spiral since at least gen 6 and if you disagree you have bad taste and should feel bad.

Pokemon fan here. I have a LOT of things I would like to say, a lot of gripes I have with the games and a lot of gripes with this video. I'll try and keep it short and address just the main one:
I personally really liked the story and characters of Scarlet and Violet. Not just for the ending, I liked the struggles the characters go through, I liked how they interpreted team stars and their teen drama, i liked arven's love for his dog and I loved the plot twist at the end. Unfortunately that's all there really is there, the games are completely broken outside of that, but if anything it helps us define a split in gamefreak that will come in handy later: the artistic side of GF and their technical side.
The artists, writers, character designers and music artists are the ones who seem to have more freedom to work, and it shows, as those parts of the pokemon world are the ones that are suffering the least. Area zero is brilliant, the music is great, a lot of new pokemon designs are awesome, you get the deal.
On the technical side however, the development team seems to be aimless, with interns working there for short periods of time and poor communication, plus the usual crunch times of development for a game that needs to pump out entries every two years for merchandise and cards. This collides with a managerial class that's stuck in their old ways, that doesn't see change well coming from newbies and that to put it simply feels comfortable with what they're doing already, and given that it sells, they have no incentive to change.
Source: A video essay on the state of Gamefreak through the reviews left by the employees, by Cydonia, an Italian youtuber. Look it up if you have the time.
Our only real hope moving forward is Nintendo, cause the thing with scarlet and violet is that they're not just ugly games. They're broken. They are an incomplete product, and as such they're not up to the Nintendo standards. Either the managerial class gets replaced, which will probably take a while, or Nintendo steps in and forces to get their act together. We'll have our answer with the new pokemon game: if it's still broken, Nintendo doesn't care cause they're still making a crapton of money. So let's hope not!
Also as far as features in PLA that you don't understand why aren't in SV, you've got to remember these games were in development at roughly the same time. And considering how rushed SV were, they probably didn't have time to implement features from PLA. I WISH they kept the level curve from Legends Arceus cause that literally fixes the level scaling issue (even if you're 20 levels below the opponent you can still deal a lot of damage and viceversa, whereas in traditional pokemon 5 levels are enough to break a fight), but if they want to keep any of those features, we'll see it moving forward in future entries.
Also fuecoco is absolutely adorable and I will fight you for it
Also gen 5 is the best but 4 comes close okay that's all bye

DP were lambasted in their day, and rightfully so, for horrendous pacing issues, slow battles, a nonsensical villain team, many poor pokemon designs, and a complete lack of endgame stuff to do. Platinum fixed many of these issues, and i feel that platinum is coloring peoples perception of lackluster mainline generation games.

The only thing that's been going consistently uphill in this franchise is the quality of the 3D pokemon models. Not the battle animations, just standing idle while waiting for you to navigate the battle menu. I'm sure they skipped working on those awful trees in favor of making sure Skwovet's fuzzy cheeks still glisten properly when a cloud moves over the battlefield.

Pokemon games seem so frustrating right now. At least mainline ones. I can't say, since I dropped at gen 7, couldn't finish the game, it was such a slog.
I wonder if Pokemon is suffering the same thing Sonic used to suffer through - basically, apparently Sonic is owned by some pachinko company and after aquiring the franchise that company focused on making money from pachinkos while using Sonic as a child friendly face to appease investors. Sonic kept selling decently well, but games quality was sinking so much due to that mindset - it wasn't important to make good games, it was important to just make games. I think Sonic 06 was the first game under that mindset - and it shows so much (while also shows that devs still were trying to make a quality game, just under someone who didn't cared for that, so they crunched).
It kinda checks - Pokemon Company make tons of money, games are still being made under crunch, just because they need them to be made, Pokemon are a pleasant face for investors etc.
Sadly, considering it was I think Breath of the Wild that showed Sega-Sammy(?) that games can make huge profit (which in the end allowed creation of Sonic Frontiers), I doubt Pokemon will learn from that. And I doubt there will be any game soon that'll greatly beat Pokemon sales (so they would maybe reconsider putting some quality into games). I know that corporations are evil and consumer unfriendly (even if they show otherwisse), but I swear, Japanese ones feel like they are level higher in those terms.
