As a drummer who began in concert and then marching percussion before moving to drum set, it's my opinion that stick tricks are incredibly important for maintaining stick control and hand technique. It also sets you apart from just your average drummer. Great for first impressions.

If you perform live music, especially cover bands. You understand why learning moves like this is important. It's a performance, not just you playing drums. So many people don't get that. So what if it's not 200 bpm sixteenth note double strokes? That's not what this is about, this is about how to actually be a performer and a drummer at the same time.
People eat this shit up, you get paid waaay better for things like this, clubs want you to come back.
I would argue that this is simply another facet of how to be a good musician, adding in a performance to your music. Not everybody wants to just see somebody shred behind the drums, some people want an actual performance beyond the notes.
To be able to play really well as a drummer and to perform well is a niche in itself. You have to remember, 21-year-old clubgoers don't give a shit about odd time signatures, and inverted double strokes.

I find stick to be a great tool. I come from a marching background and I've learned how stick tricks work with individual solos. For anyone against stick tricks I encourage you to watch Rick Beckham, James Christian, and Ken Mazur solos. They use tricks to increase demand in their performance, and it has great effect. The more tricks you do while you play, the harder it is to execute so seeing Chip play really makes me appreciate what he's doing because I understand the level of difficultly, and even more importantly since it is a visual effect THE AUDIENCE KNOWS!!! You can play quintuplets at 200 beats per minute, the audience will understand what you're doing is hard but they can't comprehend the skills required. With visual effects they understand, making it a better way to communicate as a drummer to your audience. The important thing is to be a good musician and showman. You don't have to be one or the other. strive for both and you'll see maximum results.

The practical aspect of learning spacing, ambidexterity, and timing is that it allows you to do other things with your hands, possibly freeing you up for other percussional responsibilities and flavors. It's never bad to expand your arsenal.

I'm not a huge fan of stick tricks seeing it takes up valuable time you
could be spending on developing drumming skills but I gotta admit Chip
drums really well, very solid, has great time and doesn't appear his drumming suffers from doing stick tricks; I sure didn't expect him to play so well; He's changed my mind about stick tricks, I'll start learning some of these tricks. Very good video and Great Job Chip!!!

I think doing stick tricks does make sense but it often depends on which genre you are playing. So in rock, hardrock or funk for example stick tricks can have that "did you see the drummer?!" reaction which is always awesome! But if you play jazz or fusion for example it's much more about having that feel and groove and do music. I personally just LOVE doing them!

Chip, so happy you mentioned my favorite drummer ever, Robert Sweet from my favorite band Stryper at the very beginning and then that he was your inspiration to learn and then later one of the emailers did too. I've only been able to see Stryper once, but I've seen hundreds of you tube videos, and when they were on MTV in the 80's, the way he played on "Calling On You" but I've never seen Robert spin the sticks ... Yet he does everything else with them. Someone asked him once why he doesn't twirl and spin, and he said he used to, and the others started copying him so he started doing other things like setting up sideways...after all he is known as Stryper's Visual Timekeeper...God bless you

Groove/ feel/ time and how you interact musically with your fellow musicians are the most important aspects of drumming that come to mind for me. Having said that, a little flash in a live performance setting certainly pleases the crowd (as long as it's not at the expense of the music and your playing). I don't really do (or know) much in the way of flashy stick tricks, so I should probably check out his dvd to see what I can take away from it.

I personally think stick tricks are probably the most cool thing about drumming. I've been wanting to use more stick tricks during my grooves. It really draws some attention and makes the entire thing more fun. Imagine the people's faces when they see a drummer going wild and not only laying a good groove but also doing some experimental stuff. It's honestly one of the things that got me intrigued as a kid and it's still something I'd love to master. Really awesome video guys I didn't expect to spend an hour of my day on this c:

Awesome lesson! It's always important to me to keep learning new things. It keeps things fresh. Stick tricks are a great way for you to PERFORM, not just drum. Entertainer is what you are, not just a drummer. Some guys are great and don't do tricks and that's great too. You don't have to learn tricks, but if you want to, do it. Chip is great at what he does!!! And he is clearly enjoying himself!! HAVE FUN.....THAT'S WHAT IT''S ABOUT.....FUN!!

Like everything, there's a time and place for stick. They help to better acknowledge the presence of the drummer. I've felt that they've helped the experience of watching a drummer perform live feel more organic. I feel that stick tricks also SOMETIMES can work to make certain things easier. It may be a part of a groove or fill. I can personally confirm this, as I've been in the situation a few times. I've also come to meet several fellow drummers who have admitted to this.

I think stick tricks are an important part of drumming. Sure it doesn't have anything to do with playing the drums; either do what clothes you wear or what FX you use on stage but those things create persona. It brings more energy to your performing and increases the spectacle to draw the audience in.
